Planescape: Torment and the Philosophy of Identity

Ойындар

What can update the journal of a man?
A discussion of Planescape: Torment as it relates to the philosophy of identity. How do we know who we really are? How do we know that we are the same person now as we were yesterday? Can these questions really be answered in 14 minutes by referencing an old school RPG from 1999? Who knows! All I know is that this video was super fun to make. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Arcanum was really great. Problem was that fallout 2 and Planescape were kinda better + Baldur's Gate 1-2 and later on Neverwinter Nights and Morrowind, Gothic 1-2. Arcanum came a bit too late, otherwice one of the best RPGs ever. It's like in between Baldur's Gate, Planescape and Fallout.

I think Reid's argument falls down in this instance though, as you're a whole different character. You're not the same personality that commit those actions, as you're actually a different soul per death in the lore. Though the fact his original incarnation caused these multiple personalities to exist and cause harm, does play into it. I also find the fact people remember the 'person' or 'body' who did it as something to feel guilty of too, as that's real to them that you did it.

in the same way that the seed will only grow and will only get shaped if you believe it will, the same way that believing you are adam will spawn another entity called adam, the same way the believe will shape the planes, so too is believe that can change the nature of a man do you believe you are responsible? do you believe you can do something about it? do you believe that you should? and i believe planescape is an absolutely fantastic game. chris avellone never misses

I dunno about “harder to get into than classic Fallout” 😅 I feel like that’s putting way too much faith in the Fallout name alone. Whereas sure Planescape is weird… and it’s ALOT of reading, but everything that’s weird about it makes sense in context (apart from some truly bullshit moments of: “OK, I legitimately had no in-game way of knowing that. wtf.”) But honestly, I’d say if you’ve just played another Obsidian RPG or Torment: Tides of Numenera, a lot about Planescape will feel intuitive. More so than some of the pure jank in classic Fallout. Plus, philosophically it’s a very relevant game in today’s world of identity politics. Identity isn’t something that should stand still, and I think we experience this ourselves when we encounter people who drag us back into a version of ourselves that we don’t identify with anymore, or like. People have the right and ability to change, and it’s great that the game lets you embrace that. And while there may be an argument for saying that a person is “stronger” for sticking to themselves even though the world tries to change them, I acknowledge that appeal. But maybe I’m just a natural “Sensate” and if you really don’t believe that your experiences shape, define and change you, I’m going to imagine that you’ve probably either been quite sheltered your whole life, or you just don’t get out much because you’re afraid of change. 😅 That’s my grotesque, sweeping generalisation of today.

If you like Planescape you should try out Torment: Tides of Numenera; its an isometric rpg meant to be a spiritual successor to Planescape, set in the weird and wonderful Numenera universe. It has a lot of the same sorts of appeals, very dialogue focused and it presents you with a lot of intersting and fun ideas (and lots of themes of Identity)

Ultimately the Truth of the matter is that nobody is to be held TRULY accountable for anything, because nobody is actually separately detached and in control of reality's ongoings. Reality is free and cannot be controlled by anything separate to it, because there is no such thing as separation... There is only an infinite whole, consciousness. And THAT is out of question or debate. If you fail to understand this, you are ignorant and ultimately wrong. It is the ultimate Truth, absolute, of existence. You can't even argue this point with the conversation of "eternal skepticism" between Dak'kon and TNO, where TNO clarifies to Dak'kon that keeping asking questions about existence is necessary to understand its nature, as you could always be deluded or ignorant of certain aspects of it. Because ultimately, your essence is existence itself, and as such, there comes a point where you realise what eternity is, hence questioning is no longer even necessary, every subsequent answers, would be only details concerning superfluos features of yourself. I didn't want to mention the word "God" because that would make people even more confused. But of course, you are God. That's obvious and self evident. People need to read more Carl Jung and study eastern philosophies like Zen and Buddhism, because, as pretentious and unbelievable as it may sound, there are ACTUALLY people in the world who know what the nature of reality is, and in a sense everything already knows its nature. But it is complicated to decypher what i am actually saying if you are not knowledgeable on the subject.
