PLACES THAT DONT EXIST: NAGORNO KARABAKH (episode 4 of 5)

Please visit www.simonreeve.co.uk for more information.
Simon Reeve travels to a group of unrecognised nations -- countries so obscure they don't officially exist -- in this five-part BBC TV series, shown on BBC2, BBC World and by broadcasters in more than 40 countries.
On his journey he visits little-known parts of the world including Somaliland, Transniestria, Nagorno-Karabakh, Ajaria, South Ossetia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Somalia, Moldova, Taiwan, and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
In this series, Simon Reeve is taught to fish by the President of Moldova, becomes an unofficial Somali diplomat, and finds himself crammed into a lift with the President of Georgia.
He visits a little-known country stuck in a Soviet-era time-warp, and a mountainous state which claims to have the highest rate of longevity on the planet. Simon also discovers abandoned missiles capable of destroying skyscrapers, al Qaeda terrorists in an African jail and the mass graves of children killed by soldiers.
Simon meets a blonde popstar who's a crackshot with an AK-47, a mournful guitarist, and a Taiwanese boy band. He climbs the world's tallest building, visits the site of the battle in Black Hawk Down, is electrocuted in Mogadishu, finds 5,000 year old rock paintings, buys himself a new Somali passport from a man called Mr Big Beard, and is held as a spy by the Transniestrian KGB.
Snake blood is on the menu in Asia, rock-hard yoghurt in the Caucuses, camel milk in Africa and two bottles of cognac when Simon is forced to celebrate independence with a Communist politician.
He meets a villager who sold a kidney to buy a cow, and children forced to live in freezing railway carriages. Amid the minefields of Nagorno-Karabkh, Simon is pelted with snowballs by refugee children. But in the sweltering heat of Mogadishu he needs a dozen armed gunmen just to stay alive.
------------------------------------
Reviews of the series:
Daily Telegraph: An 'exemplary series...riveting...eye-opening...remarkable...superb'
Evening Standard (London): 'Compelling television, lifted way above a worthy travelogue by Reeve's obvious, sincere interest in the people and places he encounters'
Daily Mail: "Unmissable...makes the blood boil...It would be good if this brave programme stirred a few consciences. Shaming."
The Times: A 'consistently informative series...Reeve is an ideal guide -- brave without being macho, amused without being frivolous and always informative'
Globe and Mail (Canada): 'Places That Don't Exist is outstanding television. That's because Simon Reeve, the host/reporter, is endlessly curious and incredibly brave. When we last encountered Reeve he was showing us around "the Stans," countries such as Kazakhstan, that few outsiders visit. It was an excellent series, exceptionally revealing of both the general and specific. Reeve is now one of the great TV figures. A smart and cheerful Englishman, he's a combination of Michael Palin and serious political reporter.'
------------------------------------
SIMON REEVE is an adventurer, TV presenter and New York Times bestselling author with a passion for travel, current affairs, history, conservation and the environment. He has been around the world three times for the BBC series Equator, Tropic of Capricorn, and Tropic of Cancer, and has travelled extensively in more than 100 countries. Simon's last journey around the Tropic of Cancer enthralled millions and was described by The Times of London as: "a real gem...Reeve is in a class of his own". Readers of a leading travel magazine voted it their favourite TV series. Simon, who is an ambassador for the nature conservation organisation WWF, has been awarded a One World Broadcasting Trust award for an "outstanding contribution to greater world understanding". His books include Tropic of Capricorn (published by BBC Books), and The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden and the future of terrorism, which warned of a new age of apocalyptic terrorism, and was the first in the world on bin Laden and al Qaeda. Originally published in 1998 it has been a New York Times bestseller. Simon has contributed to other studies into organised crime, terrorism, biological warfare and corruption. His book One Day in September: the story of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre was published in 2000. The film of the same name, narrated by the actor Michael Douglas, won an Oscar for best feature documentary.

12:34-12:46 "The capital of Karabakh is the small town of Stepanakert. During Soviet Communist times it was a provincial Azeri town under Muslim control. Now the only people here are Christian Karabakhians with ties to Armenia." Demographics of Stepanakert: 1926 Census: 2,724 Armenians (85.4%) and 343 Azerbaijanis (10.8%) 1939 Census: 9,079 Armenians (86.8%) and 672 Azerbaijanis (6.4%) 1959 Census: 17,640 Armenians (89.5%) and 1,143 Azerbaijanis (5.8%) 1970 Census: 26,684 Armenians (88.1%) and 2,762 Azerbaijanis (9.1%) 1979 Census: 33,898 Armenians (87.0%) and 4,303 Azerbaijanis (11.0%) 2005 Census: 49,848 Armenians (99.7%) and 138 others (2 Azerbaijanis) (0.3%) Its rather obvious that Stepanakert was never an "Azeri" town. And it was never under Muslim control because it was the capital of the Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, and all eighteen First Secretaries of the Communist Party of Nagorno- Karabakh (1923-1991) were ethnic Armenians.

I love documentaries and I am glad to have found yours, Simon. Interesting views of the world I will not see, but through your eyes. My son just got back from a year in Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne of the USA Army. Have you done any films on Afghanistan? He said it is like Arizona in America. He was in Helmand Province. Perhaps it is too dangerous to go there for you. I think the BBC does the best documentaries and they are blessed to have you as a film maker. Thank you.

Samuel Leško Its still frozen conflict, Armenia wont even accept the idea of 1 million referees returning there. The conflict in Ukraine showed that this is another project of Putin-FSB and Armenia is just puppet nation which is being tossed around for the political needs of Russia. All Azerbaijanis wants is the return of refugees to their homes and mediating the conflict without the ethnic hate which Armenian people just like Kristov818 shows.

The difference is they were not brainwashed to think they were so-called turks and have no problems with Armenians

  • @user-tg6ug6nc2o

+Samuel Leško Legally speaking, any refugee can apply for and easily receive citizenship in the Artsakh Republic. But doing so would be acknowledging that an Armenian government exists in the region. Azeris are too brainwashed into thinking that Artsakh is Azeri and any alternative is false. Which is why even until now you have refugees in Baku. The Azeri government isn't doing anything to help them so they can seem like victims. At the same time they're trying to build the tallest building in the world instead of refugee housing. As for Artsakh, it's slowly getting back onto it's feet. It only does trade with Armenia which means it's developed a sort of self-sufficiency. Stepanakert is nice and fairly modern, outside of it though is fairly rural and remains untouched, like the majority of rural Azerbaijan and Armenia.

I was born in Jabrail (Karabakh) and raised there up until 1993 when Russian backed Armenian forces seized Karabakh and other surrounding Azerbaijani territories. My family left everything (houses, wineries and factories) there, and took refuge in Baku. So far I've seen and talked to many armenians across the world who think this campaign brought nothing but poverty, more Russian control, and blockade from Azerbaijan and Armenia. Obviously, with the retreat of Russian power from the South Caucasus region, Azerbaijan and Armenia will come to an peaceful aggreement after which all people will be living in Karabakh under the jurisdiction of Azerbaijan as it was in the past. Ethnic nationalist hatred caused all this pain and suffering. It all started in 1988 during Stalinist times. Armenians and Azerbaijanians both started killing each other for stupid nationalist reasons. Both nations were still ´´socialist´´ in name when they used their Soviet armies to murder. This is why ethnic nationalism is the biggest enemy of socialism. It serves the ruling class of both Armenia and Azerbaijan!

Once Soviets came Armenia claimed large amounts of Azerbaijani and Georgian territory on basis of Great armenia. in return to there hilarious claim a large portion of Azerbaijani territory called Zangezur was given to them effectively separating Azerbaijan from Turkey! now they want more and more...

Simon!! Azeri muslim rebels in Syria eat people after they kill them. But they are still not happy! Azeri cannibalism is well known fact and one of the major symptoms of it is that they do not tolerate other people's graves and destroy them. It is their national tradition. Check out what happened in Nachichevan with ancient Armenian Cemetery. During WW1 azeries were praying on armenian flesh as Turks were killing them. After God gave Azeries lots of oil so they don't do this but their greedy government is not sharing enough with their fellow citizens and they are still blood thursty. They may be not aware how this oil can be taken back or be finished and they will end up eating people but this time only each other becuse Karabakh now has enough military means to cleanse all Azery cannibals from the face of the earth.

the funny thing is that Baku is the only rich city in all of Azerbaijan, everything else is poor, most Azeri's leave Azerbaijan and go to Russia or Turkey to find jobs. Aliyevs dictatorship is causing all Azerbaijani's to suffer they are one of the top countries with human right violations (along side with Turkey) an Muslim extremest country that shows no contribution to the world.

he means refugees from the NK conflict, not FROM NK, but from armenia and occupied azerbaijan as well as NK. sorry but you are incorrect, and really post as fact without academic thoroughness. search IDPs and refugees of azerbaijan.

No Azerobarans will face terrible consequences if try to take any part of Artsakh. No matter how much arms your Aliev- baran-ata to buy you never dare to open another war as you still feel how your ass burns after you failed to occupy those territories. Next time you will lose control of only more. God protects Artsakh from human-haters like you. There was no such a country called Azerbaran on the world's map before USSR collapsed. Thus Karabakh never been a part of country called Azerbaranistan. Stick your azerbaran legend in your ass and if can not get any comfort where you are now go back to your Mongolia or Tatarstan and lick sheep's middle leg.

Seems to me like the Azerbaijanis learned from their mistakes in the first war and spent the years building up their army and training future generations for conflict while Armenians spent time shopping for Louis vutton and Gucci .

it is your argument is not even hypocritical but completely stupid. The anclave as you called Nakhchivan is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, as well as Karabakh is recognized part of Azerbaijan. Your argument sound like argument of gangster who thinks he is entitled for the money of other people because they have it. So he thinks he is right to lute them as it is unfair that they have money and the gangster do not.

A bad documentary, unprofessional even for a non-professional report. Does not reflect the history and the roots of the conflict and gives only a vogue understanding of how it was, let's it for the viewer to guess and of course guess wrong. Apart from that, it neither shows the current situation, talks, agreement etc. actually 0 useful information if judged harsh
