As someone who did his own ballistic testing on a big old 1969 Chevy Caprice back in the '80s, what I found interesting was that .223 did, in fact, blow-up/fragment on windshield glass from 50 yards...and sheet metal...12 GA 00-buck from the side would go through the outer door skin at 15 yards, but it would LODGE on the hard laminate and inner door panels = minimal penetration ....whereas, 7.62 NATO went through-and-through and right out the other side from every angle that didn't hit the engine....i.e., if you're in a big heavy car, stay low and are only being shot at with less than a .30 cal. rifle, you've got a pretty good chance at not being hit at all.
