Funnily enough, Metal Slug's character idles are used as an excellent example of subpixel animation in a fair few tutorials. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty powerful, but yeah, props to all the animators back in the day who pretty much had to use it due to size constraints.

Wow, I've thought "Sub-pixel animation" consists only of the color tweening! Learned more techniques, thanks!
I think the hardest part of pixel art and animation for me is that I literally don’t know how anything looks so I can’t even fathom how things are supposed to be placed on the canvas. But the explanations you give are so helpful and allows me to better understand what is actually happening, so ty so much for these wonderful vids
Adam’s teaching us techniques that don’t even have names yet. 10/10
I'm not even an artist or animator, I just found this video randomly on KZread, and I have to say that when I saw the title I thought it was going to be about stuff like downscaled 3d animation, but man... was I wrong. Amazing tutorial, incredible technique, and beautiful results. Good job!
ya, that tweening is pretty interesting. ive always made my sprites move a minimum of 2 pixels, but im going to attempt a 1 pixel movement, and see if it will work.
Nice lesson. Something the bit with the knee reminded me of is an old animating tip that I forget the source of... is that you don't want to lose/gain mass through your animation (some of that gets cheated in pixels due to lack of detail) so when you move the character down starting at the knee... for it to look right you want that mass to go somewhere... hence pop out at that knee bulge them pants a smidge as they meet the boot. Think about where the mass is redistributed as you move your whosit or whatsit.
Seeing you iron out all those little details, gives so much insight. Great work.
Thanks again Adam, you always explain everything with such precision and depth, yet it's so easy to understand.
You are really an amazing human being for devoting so much of your time with these in depth content. I will definitely buy your game as gratitude when it comes out!
I don't know how I didn't discover this channel earlier. What an amazing channel. Just brilliant This guy should have a million subs
Thank you so much for posting such a comprehensive and well structured video on sub-pixel animation. I can't wait to try it out on my rigid animations!
Thank you for your wonderful videos. In my opinion, they are by far the best pixel art resource on KZread.
Always interesting to find out that something you've been doing off and on when you need it is an actual technique. Thanks for the video. You have been an immense help to me
adam at it again with a tutorial right when i need it
Honestly, I've payed for a course and your material here on youtube is better than the course I payed for! Thank you for making these!
Thanks a whole bunch for this video. For people getting started with animation, content like this is extremely helpful.
wow, this has to be the best tutorial i've ever watched, this was super in-depth and i didn't leave the video feeling confused :D definitely gonna watch more of these after i've tried practicing this technique
Your explanations are just amazing. You're a great teacher.
I wish I could subscribe harder to this channel. Can't get enough of your classes!
Great lesson! Thank you!
Hi, Adam. I found your channel recently and really enjoy your lessons. Hope insignia gets well.
Been trying to learn more about pixel art animation to improve at modding Rivals of Aether Workshop characters so this video has been a huge help.
Hey! The tips on tweening was very helpful. Thank you!
Thank you. This is actually extremely useful.
Great tutorial! Thank you very much
Great learning. Many many thanks
Great video, as always
Best pixel art tutorials, thanks
That's very beautiful, you're a master :D
Hey, nice vidéo ! Very clear and calm explanation it really help ! But I would suggest you to put the software you use for pixel art in the description so dude like me don't have to ask for it. That tilt of the sword with no antialiasing blew my mind.
Great video, I'll try this out
really informative, thanks!
i so needed that
Every video something new to learn
Duuuude, your explanations is soo good! Even I, not english native speaker understand what are you talking about.
Another great vid Adam And saw the game arrowbound its awesome Going to try insignia too
Yesss Finally i can finally animate like a pro
Hi. Thanks for the video - very cool
That is exactly what I was missing in my pixel art theory, I didn't even knew that SubPixel animation was a thing in PixelArt animation I only seen SubPixel stuff in "coding".
Interesting, i think ive applied all of these techniques at some point in a very scuffed form before, good to know that they are actually useful techniques and only looked terrible because i failed to understand what they were useful for
awesome
It's funny to think that this was common knowledge back in the day, and now people are amazed as we recover what we discarded as resolutions and processing power made these tricks obselete.
waiting for the cape!!
i remember metal slug using this technique, they are masters at making pixel art

This is the only place I can find info on outline tweening. I need more! Somebody help! Lol
I would recommend against animating the sword bobbing up and down in a sort of delayed sway, as it makes it look flimsy and rubbery, when you want it to look straight and solid. It should move as a single entity.
@cactuz116

An artist can want it look ‘rubbery’ if thats the vibe they want in the loop. Nothin should be set in stone
not sure if watching cus' I want to animate better or due to Adam's voice... he's got that Bob Ross magic voice I tell you

Adam, have you ever think about making/selling a course about pixel art, for beginners and maybe more advanced artist? It would be awesome, I would definitely buy it :)
hey! ty for tutorial, what soft do you use?
Muito bom
Adam, could you do a top down 2d pixel art character tutorial (for each direction) there are limited resources on KZread on this and most are just horizontal movement

im in the same boat.
Can someone please tell me the program he uses to teach? The one with the purplish background?
Really cool stuff. Definatly gonna take note of this. I dont like the one quikly flashing one pixel details you use.. :/ like in corners of that breast plate and behind that hood. They look buggy and unintentional to me. Really cool art, animation and video tho 👍

Ah okey the behind the hood one got hudden behind the cape anyway
Аt what age did you start your career as an artist? you are very cool in pixel art) Sorry for my english, I'm from Russia!
Missed the moment how the cloak was animated
why do you not have any subpixel or otherwise animation for the first example on the girls hand as it jumps downward? it looks bad like that
Adam your thick . Nice upload ;).
what application that he used in 8:13?
I might try this, this sound stupid but what app do you use?
@BeanBunnyBass

Aseprite
i think i may be doing something wrong, i cant have a different sprite on two seperate frames if i edit one its reflected on the other frame..idk what im doing wrong ive re watched the basic movement part and followed along multiple times to no avail.
@vagrantcasper796

nevermind i figured it out! had to duplicate the cell i thought because i could see my spite on the 6th frame that it had been duplicated already.
what is the program?
Like your hair now
How much idle character bobbing is too much? I sometimes find it very distracting. Zell (the monk/figher) in FF8 is one of the most egregious examples I can think of. His idle character animation drives me absolutely crazy. What if, in this example of your blue cloak guy if you only idle animate the cloak and nothing else?
name your layers....ratatatatatatatatat supra
What app does he use? Photoshoppe?

@@AdamCYounis I vaguely remember you saying you had someone write you a script so you could zoom and change brush size using a modifier key and pen stroke because it wasn't supported by default. Is that script available anywhere either for free or for sale?

Just as I'm about to get into pixel animation. The timing !
... I confused this with subpixel rendering. Glad I watched, that's a little embarrassing.
Yeah not there yet. See you next year or something lol

I had no idea this had a name, it's just logical to me to do it this way, if not, it's too "robotic" and lacks smoothness.
