Funnily enough, Metal Slug's character idles are used as an excellent example of subpixel animation in a fair few tutorials. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty powerful, but yeah, props to all the animators back in the day who pretty much had to use it due to size constraints.

I think the hardest part of pixel art and animation for me is that I literally don’t know how anything looks so I can’t even fathom how things are supposed to be placed on the canvas. But the explanations you give are so helpful and allows me to better understand what is actually happening, so ty so much for these wonderful vids

I'm not even an artist or animator, I just found this video randomly on KZread, and I have to say that when I saw the title I thought it was going to be about stuff like downscaled 3d animation, but man... was I wrong. Amazing tutorial, incredible technique, and beautiful results. Good job!

ya, that tweening is pretty interesting. ive always made my sprites move a minimum of 2 pixels, but im going to attempt a 1 pixel movement, and see if it will work.

Nice lesson. Something the bit with the knee reminded me of is an old animating tip that I forget the source of... is that you don't want to lose/gain mass through your animation (some of that gets cheated in pixels due to lack of detail) so when you move the character down starting at the knee... for it to look right you want that mass to go somewhere... hence pop out at that knee bulge them pants a smidge as they meet the boot. Think about where the mass is redistributed as you move your whosit or whatsit.

I would recommend against animating the sword bobbing up and down in a sort of delayed sway, as it makes it look flimsy and rubbery, when you want it to look straight and solid. It should move as a single entity.

How much idle character bobbing is too much? I sometimes find it very distracting. Zell (the monk/figher) in FF8 is one of the most egregious examples I can think of. His idle character animation drives me absolutely crazy. What if, in this example of your blue cloak guy if you only idle animate the cloak and nothing else?
