Now that Google I/O 2023 is in the books, we can share a few thoughts on the Pixel 7a. While I am bursting with anticipation about the Pixel Fold finally getting in my hands in the coming weeks, the Pixel 7a is a surprisingly capable phone from Google at a pretty aggressive price point. We'll get the stats out of the way pretty quickly, but I really want to discuss how good this phone is primed to be out of the gate.

    I think they co-exist because a lot of Pixel fans are sensitive to phone size, myself included. The Pixel 6 was a very impressive phone that was priced quite agressively, but I skipped it due to the size. The last big phone I bought and will buy was the Pixel 5a. Google made the Pixel 7 a little smaller, but still too large. It seems that they plan to rectify this with a proper small Pixel 8, but we'll have to see where the price winds up. The Pixel 6a wound up being my favorite phone of all time. A lot of this revolves around having the right features and size for the right price.

    I was on the fence about this when that Pixel 7 deal article you posted a while ago, when you questioned who would get the 7a when the 7 was so discounted. Well from Google you get A series ear buds, and a case for free with it. Trade in with my 5a bring it down to $389 I think it's a no brainer. Pulling the trigger.

    Am considering the 7a, since the 4a's support cycle is wrapping up here in a few months. Google's giving the newer models 5 years of updates and I'm absolutely the sort to ride a device that long if I can. Add on the Pixel's whole "stock Android" schtick and I'm very tempted to give the brand another lap.

    First of all they coexist great together. I could have bought the 7A but I did not. I bought the pixel 7 because it's a little bit better but what they did was a great idea giving you a phone for a cheaper price or the closer flagship and it's a great phone. I also could have got a pixel 8A and I chose the pixel 7 over the 8A in the pixel 7 in the pics of 7A are still selling. Why the pixel 8 is out and once the pixel 8 becomes a year old I'll probably upgrade to it and that's how the consumer market works. Suburb people and the kids have to have a brand new iPhone every year and that it's not how it works. The phone is unaffordable when it first comes out, people will buy it more when it becomes a year old when it's more affordable

    Yeah that's a reasonable question. This will get nine extra months of software support, more proper warranty otherwise you're not losing out on much in the way of features. It might just come down to the size you prefer and texture. . The glass build or the plastic build. The Pixel 7 has much faster wireless charging as well. Honestly the pixel 7 is probably the better deal on paper but I really like that blue color on the Pixel 7a and it's fun to have something new.

    IMO the only real decision to be made is over the phone size. Personally I prefer the shots from Sony sensors over Samsung sensors, but with Google both wind up looking great either way. Pixel 7 seems to do quite a bit better in low light and with natural bokeh. But practically... If you prefer a smaller phone you would pick the 7a and if you don't care or prefer a bigger phone you would pick the 7 because Google's phones are often on sale. There will be plenty of oppotunities to get a Pixel 7 brand new for $499 or less in the coming months.

    I would get the 7a over the 7. The ultrawide camera on the 7 is next to useless (only 0.7x). While the 7a’s ultrawide is 0.5x. This is not something that camera software can change on the 7. The selfie camera on the 7a also seems a bit better from the short time I had my hands on it.

  • @dbjungle

    @dbjungle

    All ultrawides are next to useless though. I literally only use them on vacation and even then most of my shots are still not ultrawide. I think the Pixel 4 setup was better, but reviewers literally want everything and start this narrative of something missing regardless of how niche it may be in reality.

They don't provide the basic necessary things but they sell it separately. What a cheap strategy just to sell their products(removed 3.5 mm Jack and stop giving charger just to protect environment 😂Huge respect for these fake environment protector) Do you know the original Google case and charger costs another 8% of total money a pixel 7a costs in my place.

    When they number them yearly you really see how wasteful and stupid it is to keep doing it this way. I bought a 3A for my Mum in 2019. Still basically works perfectly. Battery fine. She doesn’t use it that much. She just watches left wing political KZread shows on it, since there is no left wing content on TV in the UK (or most other countries). She uses an online banking app. Searches Wikipedia sometimes. These are the people who buy these phones. They should release a new one every few years or so. And then gradually lower the price in between times.

    Google are still officially selling the Pixel 6a, which is now one years old and have reduced the RRP down from £399 to £349 on the Google UK store. Of course you can buy all Pixel devices throughout the year at lower prices when on sale. I still remember earlier this year Vodafone UK was selling the 6a for £199 (unlocked - all phones are now sold unlocked in the UK regardless of carrier). So in a way Google is now offering a Pixel device at very affordable price point and the 6a will still receive 2 years of OS and 4 years of security updates if bought now... I know where you are coming from. I personally feel manufacturers should be launching phones at least every two years. But that is not gonna happen anytime soon....

    The way you're thinking makes sense in your head but people are not trained to get new phones about every year or two years it's considered an old phone like all the phone if it's already 3 years old 4 years old is really pushing it and that's in terms of the battery life and then you know software support and all that but for the majority yeah any phone is honestly good at this point literally like any phone but the a series is usually been very just well so valley for dollar is just so damn good value for dollar sorry for example to pixel 4a 349 and it gave you every single thing you needed I still have mine and it's great I was going to get the 5A but I didn't 6A I didn't like how bulk it got so right now I'm actually going to get a used Pixel 5 for 167 USD and I'm good with that it's just because honestly I wanted a slight upgrade I like the pixels I don't need much power and it's incredibly affordable Plus I needed a better battery cuz the pixel 4a just dies fairly quickly now but I've had it for I think it was two three years now so I got it a couple months after release I think like five six months after release so yeah about 2-3 years but yes I agree you should upgrade your phone every year it doesn't make any sense but if you do you could just get it used flagship phone like for example the Galaxy s21 that's only like 260 bucks online and that's it excellent condition or farmers one or whatever of course it used phone but it's still a great phone
