This movie doesn't leave much of an impression but man, they did do well with Merida's hair. "I like Merida, I just wish she was in a better movie" is my exact sentiment.

I mean to be fair it 100% is more of a family movie. The person that is forcing Merida into what she is “supposed to do” is her mother. You could say it was a gendered story if it was her father or brothers but they really don’t care.
@InternetNonsense
Ай бұрын
This movie is very gendered one and it's most good when it is: a struggle between femininity (Merida's mom) and being a tomboy (Merida) and understanding you need both to function healthily. By the end Merida embraces more tactful diplomacy, making connections, "mending bonds" and sees a power in that sort of performance (her mom could make the room freeze and behave in the middle of the fight just with that poised aura and wanted her daughter to have that too albeit forcefully in the beginning) and Merida's mom learns to ride horses with loose hair and various "boyish" survival skills that come in handy too in times of need: catching fish, self defense etc. They learn from each other and learn to appreciate both skill sets and ways of being: the civil political manners and the freedom and independence of being able to survive in the wild. They see how having both of these options can be helpful or even life-saving in certain situations and nothing to scoff at so they come to compromise and understanding. The message is deep and fantastic, but handled in a messy, underdeveloped way and it shows. Which is very sad because when movie gets into relationship between the two it is at its peak.

@@InternetNonsense And yet the mother gives her music lessons, which... correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't women historically banned from playing music? If you watch _Fantasia_ again, you'll notice there's literally only two women in the orchestra.

Honestly I do think they really should’ve changed a few things writing wise, like Merida being more specific about her choices and the witch just straight up lying about her spell offered simply because she loved causing bear related trouble. As stupid as that sounds, it makes more sense than making her be as vague as “I want to change my fate”.
Now I just need a “we binged rise of the brave tangled dragons” video to complete the saga

Glad they acknowledged how Brenda Chapman was unfairly booted off of her own film. Really sucks that such a great writer and director was kicked out because of Lasseter. Yeah with Cars 2 coming out the year prior, this was when Pixar’s quality was starting to dip.
