Pittsburgh: The Comeback | TIME

America's steel city was left for dead after the industry collapsed in the 1980s. Unemployment soared, the population plummeted and corporations fled. But gradually, Pittsburgh weathered the rocky transition from an economy built on manufacturing to one driven by cutting edge research. This is the story of its rebirth.

    Pittsburgh had a bad mill crash that caused it to miss out of the puberty of other American cities got. It’s a late bloomer of some sorts. Now in Portland Oregon and I can say, its a carbon copy of Pittsburgh.

    The intro to this video is all true. I am from Connecticut, and after spending a week hanging out in Pittsburgh, it's one of my favorite American cities, by far. It was nothing like I expected it to be, and the sense of community and regional pride is palpable. The people were diverse, genuine, and the cost of living seemed manageable compared to where I am from.

    Born and raised in Pittsburgh. I’ve lived through the might of the mills, the power of steelworker unions, the fall of industry here but the subsequent rise of tech, medicine, arts & education and of course the rise of the amazing Steelers and the Steelers Nation. The endowments of the wealthy Pittsburgh families-Carnegie, Frick, Mellon, Hillman, Westinghouse have kept Pittsburgh alive through all the changes. We have so much culture for a city built on labor and immigrant families including 9 theaters in a 14 block area, museums galore, incredible history and historical sites, great ethnic neighborhoods with awesome food, street food and award winning dining. It’s a beautiful city that never ceases to take my breath away.

  • @jamesmooney8933

    @jamesmooney8933

    2 ай бұрын

    Pittsburgh is the beginning of the Mid-west. Pittsburgh has nothing to do with the East Coast. Philadelphia is East Coast. The site of Pittsburgh was determined by George Washington. It was a mistake to exclude Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. The Whiskey Rebellion was fought by farmers outside Pittsburgh, because of an unfair tax on Whiskey. Farmers in Pittsburgh had a problem getting their gain over the Appalachian Mountains. So they made it into Whiskey, in order to transport it to the East. Also, Pittsburgh had a problem in 1876. Brakemen were necessary to stop each Railroad car on a train. The Brakemen would climb on top of each Railroad car and turn the brakes on with a large wheel on top of the car, then walk across each Railroad car to turn on its brakes. This was a dangerous job. The Pennsylvania Railroad President Scott ordered to cut the number of brakemen on each train. Pittsburgh strikes. Philadelphia sent the Pennsylvania National Guard on a weekend. The National Guard came to Pittsburgh on a train. Because it was the weekend, the factory workers, and mill workers were off. As the Pennsylvania National Guard rolled into the Pittsburgh Railroad Yard, the Pittsburgh were stationed on 200 foot cliffs next to the Railroad Yard. The Pittsburghers had the Pennsylvania National Guard pinned down. Pittsburghers destroyed the Yard in support of the Brakemen. It was a Pittsburgher George Westinghouse who invented the Airbrake to stop Trains. Then there was the Homestead Strike were Pittsburghers fought the Pinkertons. Pittsburgh has very little to do with the East coast.

    The best phrase I can describe Pittsburgh with "The Biggest Small Town In America". We really do have upper class gems of culture right next to blue collar grit right next to hipster cool. Pittsburgh is thus parochial in its neighborhoods, and quality of life can change by block or street. Its identity is unified by its sports teams' prestige, and that's the only civic arrogance you might see here, which also doesn't last long. It's a quilt of lifestyles, and for a mostly conservative city, we are also pretty open minded, if hesitant. We're friendly here, and we don't strut around with any kind of big city airs, and we distrust even our fellow Pittsburghers who do. The joke is that "nothing ever changes in Pittsburgh", even while we're ushering in a third, fourth, fifth Renaissance. In a backhanded way, we're proud of that. Pittsburghers stay true to themselves. Our city changes slowly, but sparkles with tiny gems if you know where to mine them. We craft things here, and we like to be steady and tough. I think Pittsburgh is pretty fertile ground to do what you want to do, if you can stay humble, chip in, do a full day's work.

    I retuned here 21 years ago. Pittsburgh has become a white collar city that has retained a blue collar mentality. The metropolitan area has its pockets of growth and areas that went down the tubes during the 1981 recession and have never recovered (the Mon Valley and the Beaver Valley). We lost not only steelmaking but several large corporation headquarters, like J&L, Gulf Oil, US Air and others. It was due in large part to the presence of Pitt and CMU that Pittsburgh did not dry up and blow away. Recreation here is amazing and it is superior to many metro areas of similar and larger sizes. We have the Great Allegheny Passage, the bike trail that took over abandoned railroads to make a trail that stretches from the Point to Georgetown, and other great bike trails like the Montour. People here love to hunt and fish (and these people are the original enviornmentalists) and there is plenty of opportunity to do both. Kennywood is a marvel, a small theme park that is a local icon and a favorite through the generations. You don't have to go far to ride an excursion train or go skiing. On sunny afternoons one sees plenty of pleasure boats all over the rivers. Pittsburgh has had an impact on America's history that is huge and far out of proportion to the population size of the metropolitan area. Pittsburgh isn't perfect. There are things I miss, such as the Downtown Kaufmann's department store. We ought to have a better highway network. I really don't like the fact that Pittsburgh has been ruled by one partly longer than China or Cuba. Peduto wants Pittsburgh to be another hip, trendy Portland, and we need only be ourselves.

    There's a lot of "old money" in Pittsburgh along with, obviously, some very smart, savvy people that would never have allowed this city to die. They would have collectively come up with some means of bringing the city back. The cooperation among all groups in the city helped save it too. That's the spirit of Pittsburghers.

    The tallest building in the city is officially known as the U. S. Steel Tower. It has the UPMC sign at the top because UPMC is the largest tenant and to satisfy the ego of its CEO Romoff it demanded of the building's owners that its acronym be put on the building. Sadly for Romoff no one calls it the UPMC Tower. It will always be the U S Steel Tower.

    Pittsburgh Pa built AMERICA in fact Pittsburgh built the entire WORLD with our steel & glass factories no one remembers that these days its all "meds & eds" now..also Pittsburgh was the home of the oldest humans to have lived on whats now the United States the adenas they were buried all along the riverbank in tombs that looked so much like natural stone that sadly the railroads BLEW UP all of the tombs but ONE to build the railroad & the road ...the adena were up to 8 feet tall and could break bones w their teeth they had jaws like animals..so the actual "native americans" and "indigenous people" were IN PITTSBURGH PA they werent walking over any land bridge or related at all to today's so called "native americans" and 10,000 yrs ago a race of white giants also lived in modern day TEXAS so thats who it really belongs too the south west covid man & the north east the adena..only theres none LEFT

You can live in my city your whole life and not understand it or how to navigate it because you weren't born here. Try not to become homeless; it's truly a shame on you as we drive by you.

    I remember hearing my Dad tell stories of how in the 60s and 70s business men use to have to take a change of shirts to work because the smog and dirt in the air was so bad from the mills. Today its a city that I am so proud to say I grew up there in the 80s and even though I don't live there now, when people ask me where I'm from, I tell them I'm from Pittsburgh!!!! I say that with pride!!! Its a city that is so beautiful and has a history that is wonderful and proud!!! I miss the authentic food!!! Nothing better than a real Ruben or a real genuine Gyro from the Strip District!!! As a kid growing up we went to Penguin games and Pirate games!!! I use to love coming through the Squirrel Hill Tunnels!! It was like you were going to a wonderful new world!!! Pittsburghers really do take that saying to heart, " our blood is black and gold!!"

    No, that was in the 1930's and 1940's. Right after WW2 ended in 1945, Pittsburgh instituted clean air regulations that greatly reduced the smog from the mills.

    I love Pittsburgh. I miss alot of the old charm as alot has changed but it's still the best place to be especially during warmer months. The nostalgia and charming nature of Pittsburgh drives the nail home for me. Some notable places that I miss are noblestown roads old setup. Ponderosa, blockbuster, family toy warehouse, reeds, batting cages, mini golf, etc. I also miss the old setup at station square. Tequila junction, Bobby ribinos, uss nightmare, fright fest, arcade, and I believe it was named the IC amphitheatre. I miss parkway center Mall and all it offered I can remember every detail. Etc...etc...etc...I can go all day. That's what's so beautiful about Pittsburgh it's rememberable and it's a town that holds on to it's humble beginnings. Most cities are forgettable but not Pittsburgh it truly is heaven on earth for many. God willing I can bring it in the afterlife, that's the loyalty and love I have for this town

    I adore Pittsburgh! Visited many times, but when I lived there for about a year in the early 2000s, I realized just how livable this city it. I've been working on moving back to the 'Burgh for a while now, & hopefully I'll have accomplished that within 2021. I'm in a very rural part of PA (where I grew up) right now, but I'd really love a more urban setting to retire in. I can't think of anyplace better than Pittsburgh.
