Thanks a lot for this video. Like Jose below it really helped me out. I was part way through this job yesterday on a 2009 Ford Ranger which also has some awkward frame parts in the way. Your tip of dropping off the idler arm (which I'd changed yesterday) to slacken the linkages was a big help and after taking the grinder to the pitman I finally got the stubborn thing off! thanks heaps

I'm about to replace the idler arm and pitman arm on my 97 Expedition. Although you didn't show it, I'm assuming you had no luck removing the pitman arm by rocking it back and forth and using the pickle fork which is why you went to the grinder. Thanks for making these videos. They've been a great help as I fix up my Expedition. Suggested topic: the rear door check has a rubber ring that usually wears out. Is there any replacement that's easy to install?

Its a slightly tapered fit for the Pitmen arm; and it can be really tough to get loose. Unfortunately I had to cut mine off too seeing how two pullers were bent trying to get it off. I have a bit more room on a jeep. But man, it sure feels good when we do get it done.

@Edward Martinez Ya mean tightened too tight? I suspect that the arm was tightened too tight which is why it was so hard to get off.. I did tap on it to break it loose while under puller tension, but it was really seized on there being an ole 93 jeep... But your right... I ruined the puller by using it the wrong way, Ed.

While I’m doing this on a Town Car and have plenty of space, thanks for showing us how to use hand tools. Everyone that does this on a car uses an impact… Definitely like the idea of taking the idler arm bolts off. Honestly, wouldn’t hurt to pit a new idler arm in while it’s out. Tighten your steering right up to like new.

NIce Vid. You can take the back bolt (the 13/16th) off the pitman arm with a socket and an extender. Just turn the steering wheel to the right, and get under the truck or suv. Got right in there no problem Came off so fuckin easy it wasn't even funny. That front bolt is a 1 - 5/16th". Only way to do her is with a 1 * 1 & 5/16ths wrench or crescent wrench ..or pipe wrench I guess (LOL thats a first)

I have same truck (almost)...I'm replacing my idler arm on the passenger side and I noticed the shaft coming out of the bottom of the steering box (that the pitman arm you are replacing is attached to) can move up and down about 1/4 of an inch with a pry bar under it. Would you know if that is a normal tolerance or if the steering box is worn? Wasn't sure if you noticed anything on yours when replacing the arm...

??? On my 88 Dodge Dakota the manual states a very specific 200 Ft Lbs the nut has to be torqued to because its not a castle nut and there is no guarantee something like a lock washer will not come loose. Figured I'd mention that because this is the torque figure on a light duty truck I'd imagine a heavy duty truck would be much higher?

  • @FixingWithPassion

@@FixingWithPassion I think your right, I asked an old mechanic about it recently and he said as long as you snug it down as hard possible with a wrench it should be fine. I guess 205 Ft Lbs isn't necessary. I've also seen a few other guys do the job with adjustable wrenches, that wont come anywhere near that much force.

Looks as if it was more the heat from the grinder than the cut from the grinder but good job

Listen old mate ,you didn't tighten the nut up completely on the pitman arm.You can see in the video that the spring washer wasn't completely compressed. You will have a worn out spline in no time if you don't tighten it up.If the nut was tight you may have cross threaded it.

You forgot to put on the "GREASE FITTING", since you don't like it brought to your attention, and had to whine about me calling it a "BLEEDER VALVE". I guarantee you never put it in until I brought it to your attention either, so stop pretending to others that you did, and you didn't know what I meant.

IF you had a torch that night, do you think heating up the metal, letting it expand and cool back down to knock it off would have worked? My great uncle was a bit of a mechanical genius and I always heard he did this all the time. What do you think? And thanks I may try this it nothing else works.
