Fantastic work as usual, Mark! I'm currently working on a project at University which involves me putting together a career plan for my transition into work after my studies. I'm aiming to talk to as many Sports Photographers as physically possible, and as someone who watches all of your videos, I'd be thrilled if you'd be open to a bit of back and forth where I ask a few questions about the industry? If this is something you'd be interested in, please let me know!

Your images were always really good but the new tech in the R3 and R5 has transformed them. I can clearly see the difference in IQ. These were flipping superb.

Re. Rain. You should try shooting in the snow. I did Leicester v Watford when we had a heavy dumping of snow. 🤦🏻‍♂️😂😂😂😂

R3 AF does struggle with rain, particularly under floodlights. However, I think my 1dx mkiii did the same at times. Using the single pt AF does reduce the number of soft shots, but you still get a few.

If I remember correctly, I think I've done OK with the R3 looking right through a net and AF focusing on the face. Would depend on your settings of course. Not sure where I'm getting that memory from since I bought the 3 after Volleyball season, but I believe it's smart enough to figure that out. But you were just there so maybe I'm wrong. That manual focus is very nice too of course. I recently did a distance test from a known distance-test I use, comparing auto with manual on the R3. Shooting about 250 yards on a dry-aired day, I added a 1.4x TC to an EF 70-200 f2.8L III mounted on the R3. I manually focused first on a surface that had some four-inch letters and then repeated with AF. Hand-held, braced against a door frame. Pretty crisp for that distance. At that level, of course, I'm no longer using the manual guide where two wedges come together. I've punched my magnification button twice to get 10x and I'm bracketing back and forth on the focus ring to get it exact. In the end you could see the pin-striping around the edge of the letters. What's amazing is that, blowing images up to 200%, I could see no difference between manual and AF. Pretty remarkable. It's that sensor-based image analysis. It has a weakness of course if the image on the sensor is grossly out of focus but very sharp very quick when the lens knows where to hunt. It takes some time to adjust to the R3. It's a different way of thinking. Very nice camera though.

Hi Mark ! I went from the 5D IV that was a real delight camera for me to the Canon R5. I do wildlife and I am extremely happy with the R5. When you'll get use with mirrorless you will never look back. Wildlife is like sports. Your subject is between branches and different other animals. If you have a setup for eye tracking and a button to jump to single point will not have to use the 1DX anymore. Don't give up. If you need help, write me. Congrats for the R3 !

Hi Mark, Firstly let me say how much I enjoy your videos. I have learned so much about sports photography from your channel (in fact almost everything I know and use for my sports photography comes from you!) I don’t know if you have covered this in a previous episode, but have you tried the auto eye-tracking that comes with the new R series Canon cameras? Maybe that might help with the focussing issues? I can’t say that I have done any photography in the rain but the eye-tracking on my R7 is a game-changer and I assume it would work the same if not better on the R3 and R5. I assign it to one of the buttons on the back to engage it when I want to. Just a thought. Cheers from Sydney Australia, Joel

Also.. if people are worried about the Auto ISO going too high.. there is a setting where you can limit how high and how low Auto ISO can go.

Hey I just discovered your channel. I really appreciate your format here: Running through shots, talking about the game and the shooting, with settings in a panel on the side. Given what they pay, you're not going to get rich on KZread, so thank you for taking the time to share these. They don't let me out very often, so I've not yet shot a field sport at night. Hence, I'm weighing the options for a first long-lens. Not ready to throw down for a 400mm f2.8 similar to what you shoot with, I've been wondering if I could leverage the R3's high ISO abilities to make do with a 100-400 f4.5-5.6L. I couldn't/wouldn't pull from as deep a field like you do with the R5 (although the 3 will surprise you sometimes) so that gets me into extenders, less cropping, but noticeably higher ISO. Your format here of showing pictures with settings allows me to look at the ISO-Aperture-speed you've had success with and do some f-stop math to ponder if there are situations where that might work. I really enjoy your running patter on shooting the events. Again, thanks for doing this.

100-400 RF is a very good lens. You have to start somewhere mate. Use it to build up the portfolio and prove you have what it takes to move up to bigger games. Get paid a bit more and save up for the 400 2.8!

@@dbenedict357 @dbenedict357 Thanks! I appreciate the encouragement. Right now I've got a lot of indoor sports mixed in with bright day outdoors stuff. Low light still reigns so I've been thinking used EF 100-400 L or, recently, found access to a 300 2.8L ii, for a good price so I'm wondering if that very sharp lens w a TC might be good way to work your way up as well. Time will tell.

Thanks for the Sub Steve👍🏻 Always shoot jpg’s for sport. Mainly for speed of editing and sending. Mostly in AWB unless it’s blue skies then I’ll pop it in the sun shine mode. Night games I’ll pop it in K and tweet the kelvins to suit the lights. Hope that help👍🏻

Hi Mark l have a canon 1dx mk1 what is the best setting for fast focusing & taking at the moment I am using case 4, but it does not seem to be quick enough. I know there are other settings within this range is there any chance you could do a video on the extra settings. I know you have done a video on this before but I’m not sure you have mentioned the other settings if you know what I mean. I hope you know what I mean and can help. Thanks Brian

@@MarkKertonwill do next time, 2nd half, saw you had your head down a lot but managed to keep jumping onto the 70-200. One question though from your final set what percentage comes from the 400 vs 70-200? I find the football I do most ends up coming from my 300. Thanks
