Former major-league pitcher Paul Byrd shows you how to grip and throw a knuckleball, arguably the toughest pitch to throw in baseball.

Great video. I love throwing knuckleballs with my kids. I could throw a half decent one in high school but was too chicken to throw it in games. Btw, greatly enjoy watching Paul Byrd on the Braves podcast. Chop On!!!

I curl my fingers all the way to the knuckle and I get less than 2 rotations every throw. 3-5ft break at 65mph. The coach dropped me because the catcher can't catch it.

Funny story about knuckleballs for me. Growing up (late little league into junior high summer league) we were fortunate enough to have a (previously) semi-pro pitcher as one of our coaches. I hated taking batting practice from him because he'd hit you every once and a while (mind you, he's probably throwing 70+ if not higher). _But_ he also liked to throw a knuckleball every once and a while. I would always smack the shit out of his knuckleball because it was so much slower that I could just wait on it so I always loved it when he'd throw a knuckleball (well when it would be close to a strike anyway).

I would throw these in J.V. games on occasion. It wasn't a true knuckleball as I would add the same arm action as a screwball but it was still funny watching guys swing right over the top b/c of the last minute drop.

How much pressure do put on the grip? For example, do you grip it as though you are holding an egg you don't want to break, or grip it really tight?

The throw mechanic is off. My dad used to tell me this (about knuckleballs) that it was like throwing a shotput--which is how he's trying to throw it. He had it partially correct, it's 100% about the grip and release. What I would do to throw a knuckleball, is grip like a fast ball (two knuckles + thumb), lock my wrist and avoid rotation as the ball came out. As I worked on it, I could unlock my wrist to get more velocity but it was always the grip and release that was important...I never got to the point where I was worried about downward rotation, lol.

Not really, because when the Jays traded for him he started throwing his curve far too often and almost never the knuckle. Not sure what he was thinking.
