When their ship crash-lands on a remote planet, the marooned passengers soon learn that escaped convict Riddick (Vin Diesel) isn't the only thing they have to fear. Deadly creatures lurk in the shadows, waiting to attack in the dark, and the planet is rapidly plunging into the utter blackness of a total eclipse. With the body count rising, the doomed survivors are forced to turn to Riddick with his eerie eyes to guide them through the darkness to safety. With time running out, there's only one rule: Stay in the light. Pitch Black is the original sci-fi hit that introduced the world to the character of Riddick, the ultimate anti-hero. Take a ride on the pulse-pounding adrenaline rush that USA Today calls "the best excuse to root for the bad guy since Arnold in the original Terminator."

I know people say Vin Diesels best work is the fast and furious movies but to me he'll always be Richard b Riddick and this is his best work.

One of his best
Cole Hauser did an amazing job playing Johns, he sold the "functioning opium addict" essence perfectly. The mannerisms, the sweating, you could tell when he JUST had a dose or when he was coming down or when he was "in the pocket" and dialed in. Dude sold the character really fucking well. I also love how the shotgun shell that should of saved his life was his morphine stash and ultimately ended up being his final nail in the coffin. The sound of the primer being triggered by the firing pin and nothing happening was audio-gasmic bliss.

@@danyael5867 It's beautiful writing, I love it. There is also another layer of irony here with how Johns was planning on using a kid in this film to survive and advance his chances of getting off that rock. In a series of "ship log" videos from characters of Pitch Black you get deeper insight into what Johns was willing to do to capture Riddick. In a 60 day chase across multiple systems, broken bones, and gunshot wounds, it ends with Johns using the suffering of children to lure out Riddick, he found out that's what he has a soft spot for. "I'm leaving the Conga System with Riddick in tow. I would'a never guessed he had such a soft spot in his little heart. (Mockingly) Children in peril (laughs). He's fucking stupid like that. Should known that slowed him down too much. I hope that this slam can hold him, and I hope those boys at Tangiers saved their paychecks." Day 63 - Johns

@@MorrowProduction What’s most intriguing is the character development between these two. They start off typical lawman and criminal archetype, but then as movie goes on the roles become more complex and reversed.

@@danyael5867 Yeah their arcs are really cool to see intersect, it reminds me of why I love Lost so much. Strip away all the "woo-woo" factors of the supernatural island and you start looking at the characters in the show and their story arc/growth from season one to season 5... its beautiful writing.
I always loved how harming Jack was a hard 'no' for Riddick. In bonus content Johns mentions that he'd finally caught Riddick by using kids as bait, and given his backstory it also makes sense.
"Don't you cry for John's don't you dare"
"Where's Jones?" "Which half?"
Makes me appreciate the third Riddick film more. Johns was a very competent bounty hunter. He dislocated Riddick's elbow!

They actually go way back, met Riddick during his prison hopping days when Johns was just a guard, he even helped Riddick escape Butcher Bay. You could say that they were frenemies and Johns definitely knew how to deal with Riddick.

It’s too bad Johns went crazy and tried to kill one of the group, if he had kept his head they probably all would have made it off the planet. Then again, Johns was right that Riddick was going to leave them to die. Interesting to think what might have happened.
Cole Hauser does not have a lot of luck with monsters in caves.
Where is John's? Riddick: which half?🤣🤣🤣
As much of a shit bag John’s was, you have to admit that he’s got big balls to take Riddick on with demon turkeys flying around them.

As much as i love 2 & 3 this will always be my favourite. Johns was a good match, hes strung out and still drops Riddick afew times throughout the film.
Just to let you know, the film was released in *2000,* not 2008.

@ 3:45 - I love this detail. That's one of the shotgun shells he stored his drug addiction inside. Him being a junkie got him killed when in that one moment he needed firepower instead of vices.
