IMHO the two best grills are the 22.5" or 26" Weber Kettle and/or the Masterbuilt Gravity Series Charcoal grill/smoker. This Pit Boss 1600 is going to be good for a smoker but if Tommy does a biscuit test on this grill you will find out you aren't going to be able to grill four to six steaks at once because pellet grills just are not uniform in temp once you dial in anything past 250 degrees. The Masterbuilt can maintain 700 in the dead of winter. I'll wager the Pit Boss might get to 340 tops in the dead of winter. The Weber Kettle can also easily get up to high temps in the winter. It all comes down to what do you cook on the grill. If you're a steak person this pellet grill is not for you. However if you love to smoke brisket, ribs, Pork Butt, chicken, turkey or cold smoke salts cheese and fish this is a good choice. We will have to wait on the griddle review of this grill. If you are going to drop $899 on a grill I definitely would suggest the Masterbuilt 1050 Charcoal Gravity Series. I personally have a 22" Weber, the Masterbuilt 560 Gravity Series and for griddle cooks I have the 36" Blackstone griddle. I almost went with a Pit Boss pellet grill/smoker but went with the Masterbuilt Charcoal Gravity Series.

DOC, First off, thanks for the comment, It's greatly appreciated! I love my Masterbuilt 1050 and My weber Kettle. That said, IMHO you could have NOT BEEN more wrong in your assessment of cooking Steaks on the PB pellet grill. On a reverse sear the Pit Boss will out-cook the masterbuilt with that open flame to finish it off. . Also, I just did 1 1/2 inch thick Rib-eyes on the griddle part of the 1600 and forgetaboutit(VIDEO SOON). Another point that I think your mistaken is I do believe the Masterbuilt will out shine any pellet grill when it comes to smoking. Of course everyones taste buds are different. Cheers and again, thanks for the comment

The pit boss is definitely built better but the master bill especially with the stainless steel mods should hold up well enough. Does this have the half moon metal plate near the temperature probe to block the excess heat ? Saw a video on people modifying the 1000 and they say it helps control the heat swings. Also , the past models temperature setting went from 250 to 300 with no 275. Does this address that issue ?

I have the Pit Boss Laredo and the Pit Boss vertical series 3. On the Laredo the left side is hotter than the right and the back hotter than the front. The Laredo has the smoke IT controller and I have experienced no problems with it. I wish they would make one for my series 3. One thing I did today when I did a rack of baby backs is I plugged in one of the Pit Boss probes and put it in the center of the grate. I put one of my Maverick probes in the center of the grate. I set the temp on the controller at 250. The controller went about 20 degrees higher than what the two grate probes did. I was surprised that the Pit Boss grate probe ran very close to the Maverick probe. Usually a 3-5 degree variance. I wouldn't trust the pit sensor. I like my Laredo. Its a great cooker for my apartment patio, and real easy for a 78 year old fart to maintain. I only wish that Pit Boss would put a hopper clean out spout to direct the pellets better in to your bucket when you want to change pellets. The ones on their verticals are even worse as so close to the ground.

From this video, the major difference I see between the 1600 and 1150 is the lid, griddle and another rack. Is that worth the extra $300 in price? @@thegalleryBBQ if you bought the 1150 from Lowe's, you could've just taken the damaged parts back and have them replace those from a new box. Don't need to return the whole grill. I don't know how the Lowe's store in your area works, but here in Hawaii, they'll do that for you. Just FYI for future reference. But I'm sure you'll be more than happy with the 1600 👍🏾

Tommy, I look forward to your videos and respect your opinions. As you cook on your PS1, can you address; (1) Pre-sear and reverse sear results with both the flame zone and griddle? I tend to prefer pre-sear when possible because I think searing burns off the smoke flavor sitting on the meats surface. Additionally, I'm interested in: (2) the amount of pellet ash and pellet dust that blows up into the cooking area and onto the food, and (3) the "strength" of the smoke flavor.

Hi Paul and thanks for the comment. With the heating assembly, PB uses I'm thinking not that much ash. As far as the smoke flavor will do.I have a sear cook coming and will be doing more. Remember Paul. If I forget or you have a question feel free to email me gallerybbq@gmail.com
