    F1 engines do the same. I think they're up to like 24k rpm. Edit-looks like 20k is the max, I thought I had read somewhere that they were doing 24k.

    @@babymetalenjoyer The RC 149 revs to 20,500 rpm and the RC 116 revs to 22,500 rpm, though if you want a street bike that revs to 20k, you'll have to turn to the Kawasaki ZXR-250R Ninja

    I'm still amazed how everything in an engine holds together at such speed for so long. My detroit diesel has almost 900k miles and still runs like a top. Amazing engineering.

    At 18k it would only be like 300 strokes per second. Lol. . There is a video of one of those engines running and showing the valve springs. I think they revved that one up to 20k. The springs get spinning round and round . Its a wonder they don't wear the head and spring retainers out. Pretty cool

    What's crazy is realizing that valves normally open and close in the path of those pistons. For every revolution of the crank. It's truly amazing how it all works without self destructing. Let alone the fact that it actually powers a vehicle.

    Well.....to be fair when you step on the gas pedal you pull a Wire which turns a flap letting more air into the engine and at the same time the electronics make sure that the appropriate amount of fuel for that amount of air gets sprayed in for the combustion which obviously is the process that makes the pistons move when the fuel+Air mixture gets ignited by spark plugs. P.S: this is a pretty rough explanation, and not all engines work exactly like this.

    ​@@Johnnysboy3987the wave seen correlates to both the rpm of the piston and the speed of the camera in frames per second. Revolutions per minute divided by the frames per second leaves you with a number of frames that captures 'x' amount of revolutions. In this case, we have equally opposed pistons at 90 degrees from each other, meaning we capture the exact opposite set of revolutions per frame as the first piston.

    At 8000rpm they move faster than the speed of sound, ik its a classic but just imagine these k20s from honda with 9000rpm, we have to give credit to that😅

    Some smaller engines can do over 15k rpm. Rc nitro engines do 50k rpm

    @Aaron Da Bluestoner im not a mechanic myself but i think thats has alot to do with timing and if its not perfect it causes a misfire and im pretty sure thats bad for the engine, but yeah it truly is impressive

    Something people don't talk about is when pistons move like that their weight change an what I mean by that the reciprocating mass changes by alot 150grams can turn into 1.5 tons at high speeds

    Depends on how you define weight. Most people consider it synonymous to mass because on earth objects at rest have equal mass and weight by convention. Though in an engineer context weight is mass times acceleration. Measured in newton units. So a 5kg object being accelerated at 20m/s^2 has a resting weight of 49 newtons, and an accelerating weight of 100 newtons. Note, one must use Pythagoras theorem to combine the gravitational weight with the accelerating weight, accounting for the angle between the two with trigonometry or vector algebra.

    I look at that and think "man, those seem to be moving impossibly fast" _and then I remember that I'm a helicopter mechanic, and helicopters shouldn't physically be able to fly to begin with._

    If this is how fast the pistons move, I can’t imagine how fast the valve train is opening and closing the valves as well as the spark plugs firing. The speed at which combustion takes place is quite incredible.
