I love seeing the Hawks warm-ups, takes me back to when I saw Pete and the Hawks play in Chicago in late March of 1971.....great memories!

This is gold, thanks!! Love how Pete would always keep his dribble alive even when falling down to the ground, like at 4:47. At 6:33 he gets called for a violation.. would’ve been nothing nowadays! It took a while in the beginning but Maravich was NBA-ready as a rookie (helped that he spent 4 years in college ofc). Pistol was 8th in the league in points per game in his 1st year as a pro! While having to share the court with Lou Hudson, who was already established as one of the best scorers in the league and was 5th in PPG that year. Geoff Petrie was a legit All-Star level talent (at both their best, he wasn’t close to Maravich’s level though).. and he scored more points per game than Pete, both as rookies.. but Petrie had free reign, was the main scorer on the roster, and played for one of the worst teams in the NBA. Once again.. “funny” to imagine Pete coming up in this era. Imagine him as rookie coming into the league now. A player with that type of talent, that potential, a player who was must see TV each and every time! And a player who would’ve been even better suited for the game today. While back then.. it was frowned upon by plenty, his style of play, his teammates disliked that too, and I could go on and on…… Matter of fact, I probably should’ve said that Maravich was NBA-ready.. IF we were talking about today’s NBA! Which is ironic… With his offensive arsenal, his shooting, his passing, his crazy talent, his showtime play… would’ve been much more than enough to make him a big draw and a big time rookie, right now! And they would accommodate for everything else, let’s say. Even down to improving his defense, to better balance his scoring and passing, and so on.

That dribble at 4:47 was probably a reflex from all the dribbling drills he'd done. And that travelling call was simply wrong - he did not travel by any standards, had the left (pivot) foot down as he took the last dribble. Oh well... Yet he did not bitch and moan about the call as players do today, just calmly got back on defense. As for his rivalry with Petrie for ROTY, their numbers were very close, so it could go either way I guess. Maybe all the hype that his father had created worked against Pete in that respect, as he couldn't possibly live up to it. For me, it was quite an experience, after watching all those silent clips from this era, to finally be able to hear the sounds of the game: the crowd, the PA announcer, the sound of the ball bouncing on the hardwood.

He would have been a tall curry in this era and a hooper like Doncic. Magic, Bird, Isiah, Jason Williams, Kyrie and Curry learned from Pistol Pete
