  • @jerodast

Archimedes principle! The buoyancy would be equal to the weight of the water displaced. Imagine filling that air bubble with water - probably pretty damn heavy. With that said...get a real small air pocket and it should work, right? Don't forget the boat's weight also pushes back on the buoyancy... I figured the flaw could be that the boat is (mostly) watertight, but not completely airtight.

I have an old diving helmet in my basement. It's solid iron and I can't even lift it halfway off the ground. That's the kind of weight it takes for someone to be able to walk on the bottom of the ocean, even if they weren't holding onto a wooden boat (which is in and of itself buoyant) with a huge air pocket inside xP.

Every sword you see, made by hand, by a highly skilled sword master. When we all graduated, instead of getting grad rings, he made us swords. Very cool! We were warned by the principal of my school to NOT bring our “grad rings” to our grad ceremony 😂

Geoffrey Rush (Barbosa) actually does the usual, most stereotypical pirate accent if you want to practice lol. His is a very good example, and although it IS an actual accent here in parts of the UK, it was adopted as the quintessential pirate accent by one particular actor; Robert Newton for his role in long John silver. Obviously he did a great job because it stuck for almost all pirate characters to come!

And how much I love the ocean. I knew I was going to love this movie the first time Captain Jack Sparrow appears on screen. And I am one of those who will call him only Captain Jack Sparrow. It seems wrong to say his name without Captain in front of it. I also love Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in these movies. The score composed for this movie is beautiful. My favorite scene is the end, with Captain Jack on the Black Pearl when he says Bring me that horizon.

I've seen like 20 reactions to this movie and at no point have anyone not understood what they were doing with the canoe. This, and also the later movies (especially from #4 onward) tried to make Jack the main character, proving that they'd failed to understand that what makes Captain Jack Sparrow so compelling isn't the wacky antics, it's the _mystery:_ we don't know what's driving Jack, what he's planning, or even whose side he's on until the climax of the film. That's great for a supporting character, but for a protagonist it's a lot harder to get audiences invested.

Pirates of the Caribbean is one of my favorite movie franchises of all time. Curse of the Black Pearl is lightning in a bottle. Yet I absolutely adore the first three. I can watch them almost endlessly. Personally my deserted island trilogy. Glad you two are watching through them. Can't wait to see the rest of the series through your perspectives!

A little bit of historical context. Port Royal on Jamaica was the home base of the English pirates. The island of Tortuga north of Haiti was the home base of the French pirates.

How could she not? I mean, just look at him 😅 I loved him so much I had to cosplay him and watch all of Johnny Depp's other films. Of all the celebrities/characters I've fangirled over, none can hold a candle to him in this role. I was a junior in highschool and my first serious girlfriend paid for me to get his forearm tattoo on my 18th birthday. I'm about to turn 38 next month and I've never regretted it, not a single time. It'll be 20 years ago in July since this was first released in theaters, my God....!! The time has flown away from me just like a sneaky little sparrow....

While I have come to like movies 2 & 3 (except for the other 2), the first movie still holds up far better than any of them to this very day. Hard to imagine that this movie is turning 21 years old (as of 2024). I remember when this movie first came out. Ah, such simpler times. Also, Keira Knightley was probably my first crush.

Great first reaction of the movie that started a saga that would eventually became Disney's favorite one among the audience. I remember seen the first Pirates of the Caribbean when I was like 3 or 4 years old. Remember I had the movie on DVD by that time and also I remember when they passed it through Disney's Channel on the old days of the early 2000s.

It seems like the two of you think the apple was unripe because it was green. Of course, it was Granny Smith, which is green when it is ripe. They are tart but are also one of the most popular apples around.

I was going to say that the green apple that Jack Sparrow was eating looks like a Granny Smith apple, which are green. But Granny Smiths originated in Australia in 1868, which is well after the timeline for Pirates of the Caribbean (1650 - 1726).

Norrington and the dock master that gets the money from Captain Jack Sparrow are in two different British comedies, Norrington is in Coupling, 4 seasons but only 6 to 9 episodes per season from the 90's. Highly recommend. And the dock master is in Allo' Allo'. It's a comedy that takes place in WW2 when the the German's occupy France. He plays a Nazi officer. It's really funny and made in the early 80's. Another high recommendation. And 2 British comedies, the Mrs. and Mr. may enjoy, Keeping Up Appearances and Are you Being Served. Both are very funny.

Because it always comes up because this movie makes a big deal of a falsehood: a properly made and fitted corset is not only not uncomfortable nor painful, but actually quite supportive and comfortable. And no one was tight-lacing in this period - that's a purely Victorian and later practice.

I would ride it at least three or four times every time we went. That and Space Mountain, because it was the only rollercoaster that did not make me sick. :D

They were lightening the ship to try and lose the Black Pearl in the Shoals.......the Shoals is an area of water around an island or rocky crags where it's very shallow and a ship can get stuck or heavily damaged on the bottom if it tries to traverse these zones. By lightening the load on their ship they make their draft (area of the ship that is under water) less and thus could potentially glide over the Shoals while the bigger heavier ship like the Black Pearl would get stuck
