Pinoy Joyride - Tabuk to Bontoc Road Complete Joyride (Kalinga - Mt Province Drive)

Route numbers:
52 - Kalinga - Cagayan Road
222 - Mountain province - Kalinga Road
204 - Bontoc - Tabuk Road
This is the road going to Bontoc from Tabuk City - Kalinga province. It is a long road with beautiful mountain views and passing beside the majestic Chico River. When i documented this, it was raining and days after the road was closed due to landslide again. Passing the municipalities of Tabuk City - Pasil - Lubuagan - Tinglayan in Kalinga Province and Sadanga and Bontoc at Mountain Province. This was included in one of my new list for must drive places in the Philippines - 3 out five done! The roads along Pasil - Lubuagan and Tinglayan were rough on some portions. There are instance roads are narrow that can accommodate one vehicle only so sharing roads here is important for a smooth traffic flow. I am not sure about security if it is safe here but i did saw army detachments along the way. One of the most fun filled drives i have experienced.
Please check the DPWH-CAR to know road closures regarding this route when planning to drive.
Special thanks to
Mr Ren Pua
Mr Joel Negre Daffun
Mr Mark Conrad Salvador
ldbpogi for his signs
As of documentation:
Road Condition - Majority of the roads are near completion except in the municipalities of Pasil , Lubuagan, Tinglayan
Drive thrill - Narrow roads with winding curves. Beautiful ravine scenery when not foggy. When foggy you feel like you are in a adventure movie. Falling rocks caution. Landslide caution and muddy when raining
Security - There are houses along the road. There are towns but i cannot vouch for the security...
Rating: 4/5 :-)
Time code:
8:34 - half tunnel
24:28 - Tunnel 1
30:08 - Pasil Kalinga
30:37 - Tunnel 2
45:13 Lubuagan Kalinga
1:02:23 - Narrow roads
1:06:54 - Tinglayan Kalinga
1:11:49 - sinking paved roads
1:44:47 - landslide
1:56:28 - Sadanga Mountain Province
2:14:36 - Rice Terraces
2:20:36 - Bontoc

Nice to see these roads being paved and opening up to local/international tourists who like to drive and explore places. There was a time when it was risky to travel through these roads due to tribal issues but times change and these once remote villages are opening up for everyone to see and enjoy. Peace and prosperity be upon these mountains!

Thanks a lot for the memories! This is reminiscent of the good old days when (Tabuk,)Kalinga, Ifugao, Benguet Apayao and Bontoc were then all known as the Mountain Province! It now is divided into five Provinces! Most roads/highways are even concrete. Development is on the go! Keep up the good work!

I watch your video till i finished it. I am actually from that place, i was born in Sabangan, Mt. Province but i grew up in Tabuk City so since childhood i had been travelling that road back and forth when i was in high School in Bontoc. During that time we had only one lane rough road, it was very dangerous especially the part between Tinglayan and Bontoc. There was a telephone house on a road shoulder at the junction road to Sadanga before the bridge going to Bontoc. The other end of the telephone is located at a roadside house in Tocucan, the village before Bontoc, these telephone operators manages the traffic,it took hrs to wait for traffic to open that’s how hard it has been. But now thru this video, i am glad that it is already cemented and two lanes with also road rails. It is sad to see though that the Kalinga side of the road especially the Municipality of Lubuagan is not yet developed. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing this video. Wishi will pass this road again. I Miss to be back home again.

01:25:10 Pretty hardcore driving in the rain, on a broken single lane mountain road, probably several hundred meters above that plain below. Reminded me of a Top Gear episode where they had to drive through Death Road in Bolivia, halos kaparehas lang ng kalsadang ito. Hats off to your nerves of steel, sir Dmitri.

I'm from the UK and have done this route three times in the last two years, twice unintentionally, as my SatNav decided to take me that way! (The last time was Oct 27th.) It really is stunningly beautiful with the river, mountains, waterfalls and rice terraces. Did you happen to continue through, via the Banaue rice terraces? However, for a foreigner, travelling on your own, in a rental Toyota Vios, it's slightly stressful! On this last occasion I came across a landslide but fortunately there was a digger in the process of clearing it and, rather than face a two plus hour return journey, I decided to wait. Very efficiently, he had it passable pretty quickly. I am curious why the road tends to be particularly bad when it goes through some towns. Is it that they are responsible for the road there, and just can't afford to repair it? Not that I was planning to take the route again, I had specifically mentioned it to Avis when I picked up the car, as their agreement includes 'Unpaved Roads and Flooded Areas' in the section of 'Restricted Areas'. I never did get a clear answer from them! Thanks for your videos, I do enjoy them!

Those town proper roads take more pounding from heavier traffic. Perhaps they just take their time repairing it. Anyway, hats off to you as most Filipinos haven’t experienced taking that route. I frequented Banaue some 50 years ago. The rice terraces look golden come harvest time. I went back 6 years ago and I was disappointed to see establishments put up over the big river that goes through the town. As if there’s no more land to build on.

l also love traveling while raining :) but in your case sir, aside from slippery, muddy & foggy road, you are also traversing thru land slide prone areas and that made the journey thrilling :D l also noticed the protest done by the vandals on the protective wall, isn't this during the Marcos/Fr.Balweg era? opposing the construction of the Chico dam that made the people revolt against the gov't. that created also the CAR? a long time ago! xD but l think if the people be compensated well for their so called ancestral lands or domains, they will not oppose it, otherwise it gives them job in the long run..tourism, power generation, irrigation and fishing, what needed is proper information for them to agree.. anyways, thanx for the journey :)

  • @dmitrivalencia

    @dmitrivalencia

    6 жыл бұрын

thank you for the info.. honestly i am not familiar with the issue regarding the dam... i saw the vandals along the protective wall and was wondering what was that all about... i got a chance to talk to someone along Bontoc and it was a short talk about the dam, he said it was something to do with the ancestral lands and culture... In my opinion, power generation and jobs are more important... because the development of the province is important. There must be a way to make heritage culture and development co exist with one another. We cannot stay in one era without innovation and change... or we will die and vanish...

Mikko Artista Sebastian Alvaran Daz from Bontoc, Mt.Province adjacent provinces are Ifugao , Kalinga, Abra, Benguet and Ilocos Sur. So from Bontoc you can go to Banaue, ifugao by the Bontoc Banaue Nueva Vizcaya rd, you can go to La Trinidad, Benguet/Baguio city thru Halsema rd, you can go to Cervantes, Ilocos Sur thru the Mt. Province Cervantes rd and exit Narvacan to go to La Union or Ilocos Norte and Bangued Abra. I think Mt. Prov and Abra rd is not yet operational. You can go to Tabuk City Kalinga passing thru that Tabuk Bontoc rd.

Or if you have more time to spare and looking for some fun go all the way to Halsema Highway towards Bontoc and pass this route towards Tabuk all the way to Tuguegarao pero puro mountain roads yun.
