Huge fan of Pino and his incredible fretless work since hearing him on Pete Townshend's cd. This trio is incredible.
That's some awesome bass playing.
what Pino plays is always beautiful he never sounds like an angry Hoover
My Goodness, Pino...
this piece could have been the ultimate intro for a legendary jazz trumpeter....nice groove guys.

I remember watching for the first showing the documentary about Peter Gabriel, from his early Genesis days to his solo work & Peter has his way of how drums should be played & doesn't like cymbals, whether it was the high hat or any of the cymbals... He had heard Manu playing & invited him to play on his solo album " So " Manu went in & did it in one take perfect but Peter is like alot of solo artists who can take things too far & wanted more tales but I loved that Many said, I heard it & played it as it should be & I'm done... Still to this day I can see Peters face when he talks about that particular recording as Peter is used to long protracted recordings... I can still remember after many Daniel Lanois take part in this documentary & describing how close he was to throttling Peter Gabriel... Sometimes the first the right one but try telling Gabriel & others who can take it too far... People say drums can't do melody well I say Manu you are so locked your like a guided missile of pure melodic drum beats & rythmns... .....
I can't believe I just found out about this now I wish I would have known sooner this is some good shit

Great stuff! Thanks for posting.
Bravissimo!
I remember my Brother (who's a die hard Who fan) texting me from a Who concert because he'd never heard of Pino Palladino ("who the fucks Pino Palladino?!") After the concert he raved about him and said he'd done recently departed Jon Entwistle justice, from him that's very high praise. He'd also raved about drummer Simon Phillips after I'd put him in the know about him at another Who concert.
Yes!!! Thanks you!!! 1Nation4Life

Because most people think of the bass player as the bastard stepchild at the family reunion. They think all you need to know to play bass in a band is a minor pentatonic scale & a 12 bar blues progression. True bassists are music theorists in the flesh. Jaco, Clarke, Patitucci, etc, and Pino right tcha! Never gets credit they deserve because people don't even know they exist. They only run across virtuosos like Pino et al, accidentally. Then they get hooked.
Manu absolutely on fire here. He's fantastic as long as he doesn't solo!

Yes, he sure is. Pino Palladino was one of the bass masters who inspired me to play fretless. I got a couple fretless basses in my bass arsenal.
What Fretless is Pino playing here? Looks like a Fender but with a Music Man Pickup? Maybe a G and L?

I here what your saying... Even to this day they never get great camera angles & footage of bass players & that includes Mark King from Level 42, who just happens to be the lead singer & bassist.. Mark King is one of the best at his style of slap bass, which is very similar to that of a drummer playing on bass... This came about because he started off on drums first & then took his drumming style of playing & added it on to the bass guitar but there's many concerts I've bought of Level 42 Live & Yes they'll be on Mark upper body for the singing but more often than not when he decides to do to something as libbed in the way of a solo the cameras are all over the place & that's the editors fault as each musician has their own cameras that look at them only & then the editor gets a hold of it & puts back together in a way that he or she best suits the band playing Live... Ps A lot of people have no clue that Mark is using his thumb as the kick peadal at the same time as his fingers in a lot of his bass lines, & at times he'll mute the open E or play it open on & off, along with ghost notes/triplets/you name it Mark does... Though I wish like every Level 42 fan he'd move back to playing on his John Diggins aka JD Supernatural Series of bass guitars as the Status Bass Guitars (though made with the most experienced Luther's & modern materials & technology) don't come anywhere near the sound that his JD Supernatural Bass Guitars could do... We had some amazing bassists from the UK that eventually after trying & trying broke out into stardom in the 80's... And 2 completely different stylists as far as playing the fretless bass guitar goes went on to push the fretless to the front of the band... And those 2 fretless bassists were Mick Karn (RIP) from Japan/JBK & many other solo works & collaborators & are with Pino Palladino... Both self taught but completely unique, especially Mick Karn as he played the fretless I'm a way no one had heard of before... I think Pino went on to actually being taught how to read music as time went on just like many musicians before him as even The Beatles couldn't read music.. It's not about reading music but if you've got true talent within you & I know plenty of musicians that can can read & play music (mostly within an orchestra) but ask them to play something they've composed or (especially) ad lib & the majority of them can't do it... It's usually the ones that are classical players but no doubt were huge jazz fans since they were kids that can do this, as the jazz kings of old loved to play outside the confines of structured music... My favourite bass players that came into their own in the 80s are Pino Palladino/Mick Karn/Mark King & John Taylor & if you think the latter isn't that good listen to his bass line on the track Rio, as it's been voted many times the best bass line of the 80s... Obviously JT is not up there with Mick Karn/Pino Palladino & Mark King but he can hold his on has gotten better & more matured with the bass lines he laid down as he's gotten older...

Ok so Pino is ridiculous, but that drum and bass back and forth between 2:00 and 3:00 was just out of hand.
Qui sont ces 3 inconnus ? Ils sont vraiment très bons, c'est curieux qu'ils n'aient pas percé, mais quelle injustice tout de même. Cependant, je trouve que Bernard Minet est meilleur à la batterie.
Badass. I wanted some more grit in that guitar tho, a proper electric tone would have fit better. Can we sub in Mark Lettieri? Great god, that would destroy!
