Pinning Carolina Praying Mantis
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Pinning my two Carolina mantis. I captured them from my patio and took care of them until they died of old age.
Are the ooths they laid going to be viable? Will they hatch? Did they mate before I caught them? I don't know! Tune in to find out!

It's funny how when I was watching this a female Carolina mantis came onto my window
I've found keeping in alcohol prior to pinning works great so that you don't have to freeze or rehydrate after drying!
i know some people might find pinning and preserving dead pet insects to be sad or a bit macabre but i actually wanted to say that i very recently became interested in caring for insects due to my interest in preserved and pinned insects. I had bought a madagascar sunset butterfly that had been preserved and have it displayed on my wall, then acquired a medium sized pinboard that had been framed of multiple local species. Last week, my 3yo daughter found a beetle in our house and screamed like it had shot her... my mom asked me to identify it and i found out it was a harlequin flower beetle. I thought it was already dead and wanted to keep it to pin it because of how beautiful it is.... but then it suddenly came to life! I quickly put him in a mason jar and have been feeding him banana and misting him daily. I just upgraded him to a larger enclosure and want to get into mantis and other beetles because of their beauty. i plan on pinning and preserving each of them that I get. So even though it can seem sad and macabre... Just know it can also attract people to the hobby. I know there are people who also just might catch and kill insects to preserve them and I think that is messed up, just to be clear about that. I plan to just let them live out their life as luxuriously as a little buggo can and then preserve them when they naturally die. :)

Was going to start keeping mantids and knowing they only live a few months I was already thinking of preserving them in resin in different poses.
I like your praying mantis pinning video it is one of my favorite videos.I hope you make more praying Mantis Pinning videos In the future because I like them and they're so Interesting. And very neat I did see the video when you pinned the ghost Mantises up it was amazing.😊
Maybe do a video on resin casting one of these specimens? That would be interesting

I am in fifth grade and I told my teacher that I make wet specimens and she gave me a huge praying mantis she found and I am going to try to pin it
Because of you, this became a goal of mine! So I picked up the hobby over a year ago. When my mantis recently died this week I noticed how dull his color became and handling the body proved too difficult to preserve :( Do you have any tips right after they die?
You did very good, how many times have you done this ??
Tbh you did a great job, they looked alive and like they were in a flight stance, if your forceps are too big for some pieces of the body you can use eyebrow tweezers!
My Hierodula majuscula is halfway through her life at the moment, so I'm going to save this video in preparation. I've never pinned an insect before, so this video will be a big help (though I don't think I'll be putting pins through her wings, I'll use paper haha)
Great Video! :) whats the song Name btw ? Sounds like Lo-fi hip hop
hey man!i really need your help.i found your channel today and im in LOVE with mantis right now!however,i dont know antything about them...could you make a video about everything a beginner should know?

Do you prepare the mantis somehow before pinning it? in the abdomen of a female is a lot of stuff. won't that rot?

You can find some videos on emptying bugs for pinning if it's a worry
Does the abdomen deteriorate using this method?
Do you have to hydrate the mantis before pinning?

No if it isn't dried
May I ask why you used so many pins? Just a general question about the practice ^___^

I don't know if it's common or not for people to do that, I just do it when I have a pet insect and it dies. But just to keep the insect in the position I want it when it dries. Because you can't move parts of the bug when it's dry (unless you rehydrate them).
Hey I have an idolomantis diabolica nymph and a unknown species ooth
A few questions, as our pretty girl enters old age and the pins are on stand-by: 1.) What do you put them in in the freezer to prevent frost bite? 2.) How long do they need to be in the freezer before you take them out to pin them? and 3.) Do you then need to freeze them again, or will they just dry like this after they've been frozen once? Thank you!!!

Ok so I don’t have as much experience with Mantis but I have done butterflies so I can speak from that experience. 1. I use an airtight container to freeze mine in, and I haven’t had an issue with frostbite. 2. I typically keep mine in the freezer for 24-48 hours when they’re fresh. 3. They just dry that way, no need to refreeze! Hope this helps!
Hey do they move when they are dead? Like a snake body or no?

My dead mantises twitch a little before they are dead for more than a day
Sometimes they'll lay unfertilised ooths but as they're both WC only time will tell

@@andrestoro2391 I'm thinking wild caught? We've had ours since she was a juvenile, so I know any eggs she lays won't be fertilized, but his could have been before he caught them...

Your mantis thought you were prey. My female Hierodula sp Blue has done this with my finger when she was hungry. You’re not doing anything wrong, just means it’s hungry. So be sure to feed it!
This is a little sad

Not in a bad way but the mantis died of natural causes right?
@Enthusiclast

Yeah. I sometimes freeze my bugs when they’re sick or dying, but all of my pinned bugs died of old age.

And so two comments became best friends :forgot my favorite bug was a mantis
btw releasing spiders outside doesnt do anything. most spiders found in homes are spider species which have developed in such a way that they can live only in houses so either they get back in in which case putting them outside has no effect or they die. in that case you might aswell feed them to your mantis ^^
