Was accidentally introduced to ramshorn snails when I put a plant in my tank. Can't say im angry - I love watching them investigate the tank! Your video is awesome! I tried to take a picture of my teeny tiny snails but just ended up with a brown smudge on the picture. Loved watching the video - you are highly underrated!

Absolutely love your work, as always! Gastropods are a special interest of mine (I'm in the process of attaining my degree in biology right now, hoping to study them in the future), and while I own several different species of aquatic snail including pink ramshorn, I don't have the tools at my disposal to witness their development in this way. This was absolutely eye-opening and just furthers my interest in these tiny, fascinating critters. You truly open a new world to people and show us new perspectives we never could have expected. What I found most amazing was the fact that the embryos have cilia and are able to move around. I don't remember if I mentioned it in the video, but the baby snails were able to lay eggs when they were just 16 days old!! Amazing. 😊

Dave, you consistently produce some of the most beautiful images ever. I love how you display portions of the microcosm with such clarity…it is like looking at jewels lit from behind. I once made a closed jar ecosystem with pink ramshorn snails as inhabitants and foxtail plants. I saw the eggs for the first time and It was such a beautiful experience to watch them grow from the eggs and hatch out. Even though these are just snails. It was such a pleasent experience. It was then that i stopped looking at them as pest snails. Got to learn more about them from this video. Always enjoy watching and learning from your videos ❤️

its day 5 and i can slowley see them moving i have my tortoise in the same room and he has a heating lamp

So are this worms are normal for the aquarium? I have them tons in my snail aquarium and I don’t know how to kill them. Do I have to get rid of them? I grow snails to feed my puffer fish, but don’t want to introduce any worms in to fish tank

The worms are a normal part of the aquatic life in an aquarium, there no need to kill them. Pea puffers will eat them too. You can reduce their numbers if they bother you by keeping the aquarium as clean as you can, but I wouldn't bother. They're harmless.

Thanks for sharing fantastic footage of snails,🐌 development from few cells in eggs. Your Panasonic camera, you mentioned that is modified for macro close ups - has it added external macro lens or have you make changes inside lenses array?

I have modified a couple macro lenses, so they fit the camera. No changes were made to the camera. Unfortunately, they don't make that model anymore.

​@@TheDave333 thank you. I wanted to buy this Panasonic model in the past, it seemed a bit expensive but I considered this. I ended with Sony handycam HDR cx450, it's not so bad camera but... It have some pros and more cons. Today I regret my decision to save not so much money 🤣🤣. Then for macro l need lense or macro converter. But first l do research what to buy for filming gecko during the night.

Filming geckos at night will be difficult. A red light might help, because many animals are not bothered by red light. By the way, the quality of my work comes mostly from the huge amount of time that I spend filming each animal, and not from the type of camera that I use. Time, patience, and attention to details are all way more important than the type of camera that you use. ❤

Thanks! I have these snails too and other snails. I have seen the eggs on the glass but wasn't sure who put them there. Do they mostly hatch at night? I've never been able to notice them hatching, but i also don't have the power of magnification.

They hatch whenever they're ready, day or night. I think they lay the eggs at night though. I was hoping to film it.

I have about 6 eggcases or eggsacks around my aquarium, 2 have hatched. I watched the teeny snails making their way slowly out. But they were disappearing faster than I thought they could move. I have a few cory cats, a bn pleco, ember tetras, red cherry shrimp, some white cloud minnows and a redtail shark. Think the babies were being eaten or was I just not watching closely enough? Also how on earth did you capture such amazing detailed microscopic footage? I spent over an hour total with two magnifying glasses today trying to see a fraction of the detail you captured.

Newborn ram's horn snails have soft shells and are sometimes eaten by fish. Still, you'll soon have more snails than you know what to do with. 😁 I have special macro lenses that help me capture very small details.

Fascinating video! I know that a lot of people (at least in my country) hate those snails and would do anything to get rid of them from their aquarium. But imo they look cute and I don't mind them as long as they don't grow the size of a plague... Do you know when they reach sexual maturity? I found that it's around 1,5-2 months from hatching (when they around 1cm in diameter), is it true?

I experimented with this to see how fast I could get the babies to grow and reproduce. At 82 - 83 degrees F ( 27.8 - 28.3 degrees C) my baby snails were able to produce their own eggs at 16 days old! However, this is warmer than most people keep their water. Limit their food supply to help keep their numbers in control.

I really enjoy your videos, what is the approximate diameter of the egg case?

About 1/4 inch or just over 6 millimeters. Smaller snails produce smaller egg cases.

@@TheDave333that they do. It’s also pretty wild they have hemoglobin like us, why you see red blood when a bigger one gets its shell cracked. Don’t get me wrong I have squished some of the tiny ones, or pop the eggs thankfully can’t see those beating hearts. I don’t think I could though if blood poured out of the egg sacks. lol. ….But my heart does weep a little when I accidentally drop a bigger one or something and I see bright red blood pour out. Then I think should I just drop it in the garbage disposal, a quick death, or crush it, or let it be? All the thoughts….lol the struggle, sometimes when they do spill a little blood they seem to recover or so it appears! lol ignorance is bliss when you don’t see any blood or beating hearts! 😂 I do end up collecting them and giving them to my sister after a while to put in her betta and goldfish tanks, some survive and some don’t..😢😂. Though I could make a small buck in the amount of gorgeous red, orange, pink and recently white rams-horn I have since I have culled any other color long ago. Occasionally some dark color will pop up but they get put in the scud tank or be shared.

I assumed they'd be cheap to buy, but people are charging high prices where I live. 5 UK common brown/black Ramshorn adults on amazon- £18.99/$24.17 + postage. My local pond has been fully covered in algae for 3 years. I wondered why. Guess I don't have to wonder anymore. A volunteer human 'clean up crew' would come to the pond twice a year (with nets), until 3 years ago. They were cleaning up in more ways than one.

Amazing video! This means those tiny pink worms are not the baby snails from the billion egg clusters tho... I wonder what they are (and where all the baby snail went).

Not that I'm aware of. I think they're just scavengers. The small white ones are rhabdocoelas. There were no planaria or detritus worms.
