I think Ummagumma was a great prototype of what Pink Floyd would become. They were finding themselves and still trying to find their sound. Without Syd Barrett they had to reinvent themselves, and this was difficult because you can hear them trying to be like Syd, and that was where they failed. They succeeded in staying together and this is what is most important. In some ways, I think Animals is revisiting this type of experiment, but by then, they already had an identity, and that's why Animals works.
