Today we take a look at one of my most requested topics...Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. We explore Barrett's last day with the members of the band during the making of 'Wish You Were Here' while the band was working on the song 'Shine on you crazy diamond.'

une 5th 1975 would mark the day Pink Floyd would see their old bandmate and former ringleader Syd Barett for the last time. Barrett crashed the band’s recording session for their ninth album Wish you Were Here. The band members were left both shocked and saddened by the encounter.
Syd Barrett, Pink Floyd’s co-founder and the creative driving force behind their debut LP, 1967's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, didn’t leave on good terms with the band. Initially described as joyful, friendly, and extroverted, he began to experience personality changes becoming increasingly depressed and socially withdrawn. His mental instability, his volatile on and off-stage behavior and crippling addiction to psychedelic drugs made him a liability to the band. Barrett had minimal involvement in the group’s second LP 1968's A Saucerful of Secrets but he was ultimately replaced by the time the album was finished. While the band wanted to keep him as a touring member it became impractical and he was soon replaced by guitarist-singer David Gilmour
Following his departure from Pink Floyd, Barrett would end up releasing two studio albums both in 1970's titled The Madcap Laughs and Barrett. The members of pink floyd were so guilt ridden with kicking Syd out of the band that they contributed to both solo records with both albums being co-produced by David Gilmour and featuring basist Roger Waters and keyboardist Richard Wright, respectively. Following the release of The Madcap Laughs Barrett retreated from the spotlight.
Late keyboardist Richard Wright, reflected on those solo sessions with Syd Barrett revealing: “Doing Syd’s record was interesting, but extremely difficult. Dave [Gilmour] and Roger did the first one (The Madcap Laughs) and Dave and myself did the second one. But by then it was just trying to help Syd any way we could, rather than worrying about getting the best guitar sound. You could forget about that! It was just going into the studio and trying to get him to sing.” he’d remember
Fast forward 5 years later and Pink Floyd were working on their ninth studio record Wish You Were Here. Two notable events occurred on June 5, 1970. One event was David Gilmour was getting married and, the band was completing the final mix on the song “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” which was a tribute to Syd Barrett. There was also a third notable event on this day and that’s when Pink floyd got an unexpected visitor in the studio.
An overweight man sporting shaved eyebrows and head holding a plastic bag walked into the studio. David Gilmour thought the man was a worker from the record label EMI, while the other members initially had no idea who he was. Eventually they realized it was their former bandmate Syd Barrett. And according to one report Barrett held a toothbrush and attempted to brush his teeth by holding the brush still and jumping up and down.
In Mason's memoir of Pink Floyd, titled Inside Out, he recalled Barrett's conversation as “not entirely sensible".[23] Storm Thorgerson who was an english graphic designer and video director who worked with Pink Floyd was present in the studio and later reflected on Barrett's presence: "Two or three people cried. He sat round and talked for a bit but he wasn't really there."[24]
During their chat Andrew King who was Pink Floyd’s co-manager who was also present asked Barrett how he gained so much weight and Barrett reportedly said he had a big refrigerator in his kitchen and he had been eating lots of pork chops. And during the same conversation Barrett offered his services to the band, but when he listened to the mix of Shine On he didn’t seem to understand the song’s connection to his tragic life. Waters asked Barrett what he thought of the song, and he simply said he did not like it, and walked out of the studio.
During the visit barrett would also join the guests at Gilmour's wedding reception in the EMI canteen, but he would leave without saying goodbye. This photograph snapped of barrett is from that very day. Most of the band members wouldn’t see Barrett again until his death in 2006. And Rogers Waters would reveal to the Mirror Newspaper in 2008 he had one final encounter with Barrett

No they only had to pay him royalties on the music he was involved with. Anyone who is a true Floyd buff knows that was one album and about 1/3 of the 2nd album. Those albums in fact were lost to any real radio play or sales until AFTER Dark Side Of The Moon. But David Gilmour made sure Barrett got royalties. To those saying "THEY" were jerks to each other over money should do some research!! Roger Waters is the one who caused the money issues!! He gave no writing credits to Richard Wright and damn few to Nick Mason. As time went on he even tried to cut Gilmour's writing credits to zero. When in fact Waters could barely play the bass, let alone guitar, or any other instrument. The writing credits are where the royalties come from. Much like Jerry Cantrell made sure that Mike Starr wasn't credited with writing songs for Alice In Chains (Mike has a grand total of 4 writing credits). So please be careful who you accuse of what. There's a reason Gilmour doesn't want to be chummy with Waters. There's also a reason that Gilmour and Mason won the lawsuit to be able to continue to play under the name Pink Floyd once Roger got mad and took his ball and went home.

What's interesting is in the movie Lords of Dogtown there is a heartfelt moment when a bunch of friends skate a swimming pool with their friend who is dying from terminal cancer, the song Wish You were here is featured in a very emotional scene and the name of the character who is dying? Sid... I'm sure it could just be a coincidence but man that would be awesome if it was a really deep reference.

I've had a hypothesis for a long time now, listen to 'Jugband Blues,' it's often used as evidence that Syd Barrett was losing his mind. Certainly he had issues, but I think he's saying something else in that song. Pay particular attention to the part where he sings "I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not here." I believe that part is less about having a moment of clarity where you realize you're going mad, but more about loneliness and getting pushed out of a band. I think he found out he was getting replaced and he didn't appreciate it

Drug use aside, a lot of Syd’s issues were as a result of not coping with fame so either way he probably would have disappeared from the limelight. @@daBEAGLE1017 Well as far as I know, and I've been fascinated with Syd and early PF albums for many years now. First it was not LSD, but powerful mushrooms, The mexicans or hawaiians, IIRC. Second, when I was younger, I used to try many hallucinogens, along with others peoples. I witnessed first hand some people going mad by the use of it. And it fits perfectly with the videos and photos and testimonies I've read and seen. Usually, going crazy with hallucinogens is defined with paranoia, schyzophrenia and depression, just saying.. Some people wake up after a while, but some never come back. I agree that there were some issues with Syd before as his antisocial behavior was already there, but he clearly passed a point of no-return when he got that mushroom hit.

Psychedelic drugs (pretty much LSD here I presume) are not physically addicting like opiates or say, alcohol . As mentioned elsewhere Syd was likely self-medicating with already existing mental issues I am not the one to specify. it is interesting to me me that so many 60s musicians took a boatload of acid and seem *relatively* together and coherent after the fact. And yet there was a few like Syd, Brian Wilson, Skip Spence, Peter Green...where LSD seemed to be the catalyst for going over the edge. Brian Wilson made it back to functional even productive though still clearly scarred. Syd and others never returned. Tragic.

Not sure about die hard AC/DC meat and potato rock types, but any rock & roll fan worth their salt will at the very least have heard of him.

The guy was bi polar and probably schizophrenic. He had issues before his acid trips. I remeber as a Londoner. He used to walk his two dogs on the common not far from where I lived. Not long before he passed away. I used to ride my horse I had at the time. I used to see him 2-3 times a week when I rode everyday... We wasn't always there. He used to go out about the time the sun went up. So you'd see him coming out of the early morning mist. He and his two dogs. Head down .... Never paid any attention to anyone. Never spoke because people left him alone. I only knew who he was when one day my horse spooked at his dog that had got away from him . Sid came over to APPOLOGIES for his dog scaring my horse. One look close up of his eyes. I knew who her was as he looked up to APPOLOGIES. He was very polite. Seemed worried I'd get hurt. I told him I'd be ok. Thankyou for checking on me. He sort of smiled and waved and walked off. After that when I saw him he'd often wave to me and I'd wave back. 2006. And I wake up early to go riding. And I turn on the radio.... And hear he passed. I was heartbroken. . I like Pink Floyd quite alot. Sid to anyone who saw him in those morning's was just another dog walker. It was a hard hit when he left. RIP SID BARRETT. . The delivery was difficult and Peter felt that the band didn't understand his need to be with his family. They completed the album but relations were strained. He resigned before the tour but played the dates anyway. He said he felt awkward because he couldn't tell the crowds that he'd left. It's also possible he felt he could make his own music, rather than be in the band.

I don’t believe it was mere coincidence that he was there that day, and someone in the band’s camp arranged for him to show up. At that point, they had been working on the album for months, with Syd clearly being on their mind the whole time. Someone thought it would be interesting to see what would happen if he showed up.

I’m not obsessed with him I really love early Pink Floyd now but I would say I’m not obsessed with him and I have no idea whether he died in 2006 or maybe died last year I have no idea I haven’t heard from him for a year and a half but he would’ve been like 76 years old so whether or not he died in 2006 Or faked his death and died later is something that’s questionable in my mind he might lived till 80 years old but I haven’t heard from him for a year and a half and I was not sure whether or not this was actually him but they were self portraits and I still have them and it’s amazing along with other artwork that he did and a painting of me it was very strange

If you take herion maybe 1-2 times buddy you develop a very serious dependency because that drug is very powerful, and can be incredibly difficult to get off and for some people, the psychological effects, urge to lapse never really goes away. I've read interviews from rock stars, Hollywood actors, from Yoko Ono, Anthony Keidis, John Frusciante of Red Hot Chili Peppers and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith who made similar observations. Sometimes, it is the actual substance itself, its potency, strength and dependency makes you addicted, not necessarily individual's unique or particular personality. Narcotics, especially the more purer, higher grade variety are a radically different animal then psychedelics or even cocaine, where for some, the dependency levels are more gradual. Meaning, for most people it might take little more time to get seriously addicted to it.

Some could have had an amazing amount of LSD on them. And from what I've read I think that's true. It's a bloody shame. David Bowie said that Syd was the first English singer to sing without an American accent and promoting images projected into the background behind the band to make them look 'art' like. BOLLOCKS ROGER! How dare you say about Barrett ~ "He's certainly not nearly as important, as people say, in terms of Pink Floyd." Yes, Syd wrote the songs but he also sang them! He was the Lead Vocalist, Lead Guitarist and the group's focal point! You were just part of the Rhythm Section! You only contributed one song, the unmemorable "Take Up Thy Stethoscope And Walk" on the "Piper" album! Syd named the band for Christ's sake! You selfishly admit you felt threatened by Barrett which gives credence to the theory that YOU were the prime mover in ousting him from his band! You didn't explain why he didn't speak to you when you ran into him in the department store! He couldn't stand the sight of you and hated it when someone mentioned your name in his presence. He would go into a rage shouting how YOU took his band away from him! Note: There are a couple of mistakes in the narrative regarding Roger Waters involvement in Syd's "The Madcap Laughs" album. Roger and David only produced a few Acoustic Guitar numbers which were not fit for release! I can't believe Waters put out those dreadful songs! I think it was sabotage! Roger Waters did not play Bass on the "The Madcap Laughs".
