One reason Pink Floyd is so unique is the influence of their founding member, Syd Barrett. Check out their two first singles written by Barrett: Arnold Layne and See Emily Play. Also Astronomy Domine from their debut album Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Anyone who wants to understand the Floyd needs to start at the beginning. They built their sound over the years. As architectural students, they had a sense of spaciousness. Syd Barrett was the odd one out, an art student who inspired a lot of Dark Side Of The Moon and all of Wish You Were Here. Enjoy the trip.

The not so hidden gem from that "Wish You Were Here" album which you really owe it to your self to check out at some point is "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" The best version I think is not the live version or the "official video" too distracting that one is....no go for the studio version, and headphones you have. It's a long song 15 minutes or so but it will take you to a place....no spoilers....see if anyone else is talking about Shine on you crazy diamond in the comments....thanks for the reaction, I like watching the ones you do.

I think you really got Pink Floyd in your description. Every song has a mission, a journey if you will. And we can put ourselves in the song's position because we've been there - maybe not exactly in what they did but the same psychology and emotions that they are conveying by music

While all my friends had posters of Shaun Cassidy or any other flavor of the week on their walls, I had David Gilmour on my wall! I'm STILL crushing on him! I'm also biracial and my mom is black and my pops is white. My pops introduced me to Pink Floyd many, many years ago! I grew up in the Herman Garden projects on Detroit's west side, which was a predominantly black hood! I introduced that hood and my friends to Pink Floyd! Our summer street parties were lit and caused some confusion to the outsiders visiting! They didn't expect to hear PF or Zeppelin coming from our hood!

Much love to you, Chod.

Mind fuck. The lead for this song was Roy Harper, a folk singer who happened to be recording in the same building, because Roger Waters allegedly didn’t have the vocal range for the song possibly due to exhaustion and David Gilmour simply didn’t want to sing it.

With Echoes, DSOM, Wish You Were Here, and Animals all coming out at that time with all the other Great Music, I know I was amazed at Pink Floyd, and what They could Create. PF, Yes, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, it all seemed like it was all too great, to ever be exceeded, and I have yet to see their equals. Also, many other bands of the time, right there at the mark.

The Floyd didn't do drugs- so they say. Early days they experimented a little with weed and the odd acid-trip but with what happened to founding member Syd Barrett that would scare the living crap out of you if you were in the band. They drank alcohol but most of all the problems they did eventually have was tension within the band. Roger Waters fell out with the other three guys as he tried to take over and believed the band was nothing without him.....how wrong he was. In the end, the four of them together that was the real magic. THAT was Pink Floyd.

Driven by desire for making everything perfect. This eventually helped drive the band to destruction. A classic example, David was trying an 8 note looped sequence on a brand new piece of kit for the track On the Run (DSotM) Roger completely re-did what all the work David had done.... David admitted Rogers version was better. I think everyone can see how that level of attention to detail would eventually cause friction.

I'm the biggest Pink Floyd fan ever. If you want to try something different in their catalog, try playing the song "The Final Cut" and the song that follows it, "Not Now John". You can experience the range, unmatched by any other band. Here is another good song from someone else. It's Nazareth singing "Whiskey Drinkin' Woman". Or try "Down Home Girl". Here is a link to something completely different, but excellent, if you like guitar music. I give you Buckethead and the song "Soothsayer". kzread.info/dash/bejne/lq2FrKpvYZixp6Q.html

I think the reason the older bands, '60's, '70's and '80's, are so much better than today's "artists" is because the musicians practiced a lot, and there was an emphasis on the arts in schools, unlike now, and there was no internet to waste time on. You wasted it on practice, practice, practice. That's how you get good, not Guitar Hero. Sorry.
