This is truly the key to this song: “The child has grown, the dream is gone. I have become comfortably numb.” You don't have to be a heroin addict to understand this lyric and empathize with it. In my opinion, the song is about loosing faith in childhood dreams, childhood expectations for the possible and the realization that most of us are mediocre and average, despite the endless possibilities we believe were there for us as children. We go to work, we pay the bills, we are trapped and just not realizing it that we've become comfortably numb and accepting our station in life despite our soul's depression.

I’m a recovering addict. This song is the epitome of opiate addiction. I was constantly seeking oblivion. “Hello..is there anybody in there. Just nod if you can hear me..” what happens during an opiate overdose. As addicts we were seeking that comfortable, numb, feeling. We weren't raised this way. We are ashamed of our addiction, yet we continue to self sabotage. Such a sad, lonely, misunderstood place to be. At the lowest points in my addiction I had just come to terms with the fact that I was hopeless, helpless and on death’s door. I had made peace with it. The more I used, the more closed off and numb I became. I isolated myself, so I could die in peace and away from everyone who loved me. I was sick and tired, of being sick and tired. I was a horrible disappointment to all of them but I had no self control. “I had become comfortable numb” Grateful to be alive today. 10 years of sobriety. I have a daughter, a spouse and so much to live for. Every time I hear this song, tears stream down my face. It’s a reminder of how life used to be and how lucky I am to have escaped addiction’s filthy grip ❤️

"Did you guys just get instantly happier?" - it could be an intentional rollercoaster... the verses are in Bm which can be considered a "dark" key, leading to a very up-lifting chorus that happens to be in D major, a much more "positive" key... The orchestra and harmonies definitely add to it, making you feel as if you're floating. The choruses are played on something called a high strung guitar which includes an open 9th - so very happy sounding... behind it all you have the orchestra playing these descending "scales" in different octaves, that add motion. Beautiful song

I feel your pain. I too lost my dad. It was COVID related. My last image of him, besides his viewing, was in a room with about 4 or 5 doctors frantically working on him. They worked on him for hours that day. Finally, after he had coded 5 times, they finally let him go. It was about a month after that I finally felt this comfortable numbness. It’s so hard... even today. But I have a sense of acceptance that makes it easier. I miss you dad ...

I was a teenager in the 70's and we would listen to Pink Floyd along with others like Black Sabbath, Jethro Tull etc at parties on Friday and Saturday nights with SNL on the tv with the sound off, all smoking weed, which was the norm in the 60's and 70's. It was very relaxing and fun with all your friends there chatting with the music so loud that you could barely hear each other but you could feel the music clear through your bones and it was amazing. Unfortunately, we all have to grow up and those days have been gone for me since I graduated in 1976. I still do enjoy their music very much.

Totally agree, I have the same reaction with Dream Theater. "The Spirit Carries On" is a classic example. I am a drummer, I have played in various flavors of metal bands throughout my life, I have MANY influences, including Rush, Yes, Dream Theater, Genesis, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath/Ozzy, and of course Pink Floyd., and the list could go on and on. I always value something that I hear, that touches my heart and soul in a meaningful way. Sometimes I hear a song, and read the lyrics and wonder, why didn't I write that? I tend to be the one that writes lyrics in whatever band I might find myself in. Not so much these days, 66 years old, looking to move to Central America to escape the American political insanity, perhaps rejoin a musical community on the other end. Maybe a bit of a "reboot" of my life. I don't really feel all that "old", just matured like a vintage wine, maybe ready to be enjoyed again.

I do think about that now, in my later years. I was filled with fear and regret most of my life, and this song was a bit of a salve for those feelings all these years -- until I was diagnosed with GAD. And got at least some pharmaceutical treatment for it. Then I was able to put it all together. All my life I knew I suffered from anxiety, but not depression -- not until I was placed on Zoloft and it cleared my head. Now I realized that I'd been suffering from depression almost my entire life, and now "Comfortably Numb" has become especially poignant. My only remaining regret is that I didn't know about this sooner in life, otherwise it might have turned out substantially more fulfilling. Alas, "The child is grown, the dream is gone;" but I'm in a good place now and trying to make the best of my remaining years on earth. All in all, it has been a good life, and I can look to the future now with a clear head. Now when I listen to "Comfortably Numb" I can just ride the emotion throughout the entire piece and come out the other end just going "Wow." Pink Floyd is perhaps the best prog rock band to come out of the 70s.

@@JamesBond00797 Yep, work is one of the very few exceptions. Other than work or a dire situation I’m rolling the windows and the volume up lol.

What still amazes and touches me about this song is the absolute and truly emotional effect that it continues to have on me and every person that I watch, listening to it for their very first time. From the initial and flowing sense of euphoria when you feel and hear, "there is no pain, you are receiving me" to the more intimate and personal, "when I was a child I had a fever" and "this is not who I am" and then the shift to the darker and more painful "I have become comfortably numb." The range of emotions and expressions are all over the place, but when David Gilmour slips into that haunting solo, following the word "numb" it clicks and the expressions are universal, the tears fill our eyes. I do not know why, but it touches every single one of us in so many deep and different ways. Thank you for letting us watch you listen to and experience an incredibly beautiful song...
