Pink Floyd - A New Machine/ "Terminal Frost" (Live Remix 2019)

Музыка

1987 album, A Momentary Lapse of Reason
A New Machine pt 1 /2
They serve as bookends to the instrumental track "Terminal Frost", and feature David Gilmour's voice, electrically distorted, through a vocoder and a rising synth note. The narrator seems to express weariness with a lifetime spent in one body, waiting for the moment of death, but seeks consolation in the fact that this "waiting" will eventually end.
David Gilmour - guitar, vocals
Richard Wright - piano, synthesizer
Nick Mason - drums, tambourine
with:
Jon Carin - Prophet V synthesizer
Guy Pratt - bass guitar
Michael Kamen - orchestral arrangement
The Division Bell Tour, 1994
David Gilmour - electric guitar, lead vocals
Richard Wright - piano
Nick Mason - drums
with:
Guy Pratt - bass
Jon Carin - keyboards, vocals
Gary Wallis - percussion
Tim Renwick - acoustic guitar
Scott Page - SAX
Sam Brown - backing vocals
Claudia Fontaine - backing vocals
Durga McBroom - backing vocals

I love their older music, but Momentary Lapse of Reason is my Floyd growing up. Not the same as my father’s, but just as much meaning. And that’s what makes an epic band, that each generation finds meaning in their art.

Same here, LOVE the old stuff as much as the new but for different reasons. This album came out when I was in HS and it was EPIC to me. This tour was also my first PF concert, life changing event.

I get your point, though I suppose the good thing about human creativity is that there is an infinite source of inspiration inside our souls and we will create many beautiful things of PF tier, but this things will be different. And still these new coming pieces of art will touch us just as deeply...

It's amazing how extremely good their live performance is. Very often an album version is way better than the live version but they nail it every damn live show. This album was the soundtrack for a great part of my high school period. I'm 48 years old now but every song of this album still touches my heart and soul over and over again and this will never stop. Thank you PF for bringing so much beauty 🙏❤️

Terminal frost is simply an extraordinary and undervalued work in the post-Waters era, a vital piece of the album a momentary lapse of reason, an album of great manufacture and quality, sometimes despised by the most orthodox fans of the band but in my opinion of what best of pink floyd

Totally agree! Momentary Lapse was my first introduction to PF when I was only about 12 or 13. When I heard the earlier stuff, I was initially disappointed that none of it was quite as musically ‘rich’ as Momentary Lapse. Of I course, I came to realise the brilliance of the earlier albums, but Momentary Lapse, and especially Terminal Frost, remains a personal favourite of mine. Simply brilliant music.

I kind of feel estranged from the Pink Floyd fanbase after this, because I was told that AMLOR was their worst and I felt it was incredible. Roger’s absence was apparent but David really stepped up, and his playing and presence of those like Tony Levin (my personal favorite bassist) are extremely good to me, which is how One Slip and Terminal Frost won me over. Plus, as is apparent in this performance, Guy Pratt and Scott Page (who I initially perceived as a vampire from The Lost Boys) are great players.

Thank you, dear HD Pink Floyd, for this upload and for a great explanation of this composition - a suite of three parts. A New Machine pt. 1 and 2 are remarkable meditations about life and death with the use of the vocoder. Very interesting use of it by David Gilmour. And Terminal Frost, impressionistic instrumental which concluded this suite, amazing. Excellent performance indeed, especially of great saxophonist Scott Page. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason is a very mature work too, of course different, but nevertheless a very special, delicate statement about the state of mind of the Pink Floyd (in a very subtle manner through impressionistic music, emotions that bring surreal images of all kinds of global affairs, for example in songs The Dogs Of War, On The Turning Away, Sorrow) after the departure of Waters. If I can just describe how many years I waited to hear, see this part of Delicate Sound Of Thunder. Amazing, really.

Great songs as Pink Floyd attempted to move back and find some of their old sound away from the Waters driven albums which is in NO WAY a put down or dislike of the Wall or Final Cut albums. Pink Floyd had to move on without Roger Waters and did justice to their legacy.

Funny enough, the saxofonist who's played the soprano part in the original recorded track in 1987 was no other than the Supertramp saxophonist, the great John Helliwell!
