😊 For those that don't know: It's not necessary or advisable to try to "preen" or pull the keratin caps off of pin feathers. When the feathers are fully formed the white covering will dry up and flake off. On larger feathers it does this in stages as the feather grows. If for some strange reason the bird needs help, just very gently brush their soft feathers with your finger. My parrot likes his head gently brushed backwards like this whether it's molting time or not. For the larger more stiff feathers just leave them alone. Regrowing feathers takes time. Showers may help if they enjoy showers, the water should always be room temperature. Proper nutrition always helps tremendously in general, this includes Sunlight or if need be full spectrum lighting- it's how they produce vitamin K. Pin feathers are the new feathers that grow in after shedding out old feathers, usually about twice a year. *while they're forming, they have a blood and nerve supply to each growing feather. If they're injured they will bleed and hurt significantly. So it's best to let nature take it's course. Again, this is for those who don't know about these things and in no way is meant to be unkind to anyone that bothers to read it. ✌🏽

For those who are curious: In the wild, birds have either a close friend of the flock or their mate preen the pin feathers, but in captivity, that job falls onto the human. Though when it comes to smaller birds, such as Budgies, you have to get a little creative with preening. I've never seen someone use a pair of tweezers to preen the pinfeathers before, but the bird seems to be extremely happy!! Not only does helping your bird preen pinfeathers feel extremely good for the bird, it can strengthen the bond between you and your bird even more!

What you're seeing is "bird dust" or more biologically correct, the keratin sheaths that cover the birds feathers. Once the feather has finished growing, those sheaths will come off with grooming. Since they can't reach those spots, like on their head, so us humans help them by gently using our fingers or small tools to massage them loose. It doesn't hurt and is actually a bonding exercise with your bird. Just a little factoid.

The bird looks so happy. I had a couple of budgies in the same cage as a child and usually they didn't get along well, but even in the heat of (playful) battle - they would take small breaks to nibble on eachothers heads x) so we never had to help the birds with this before

Satisfying to watch and probably even more satisfying for that budgie. My cockatiel lets me roll his pin feathers through my fingertips but my budgie isn't so keen to be touched very often so I can't imagine he would let me get close to him with a tweezers. The only thing I'd caution people who might want to try this is that you have to be careful because when the pin feathers first come in a lot of them are blood feathers and it can be dangerous to break a blood feather.

@@stephencrook6277 I should have clarified: I don't bring my birds outdoors unless they are on a bird harness, or in a carry cage with the doors clipped with clothespins. My birds were lost one day when I was attending university. A family member decided to take my birds outdoors, but they left the cage door wide open and all my budgies got out. My birds were never recovered; my neighbourhood is teeming with cats that were very good at killing the hummingbirds and other birds in my yard and around the neighborhood. Thank you so much for watching! I'm hoping to do a video soon about training your budgies not to be afraid of tweezers. For shy birds, I recommend spending as much time with them every day if you can, and move your hand slowly toward them with the tweezers. If they panic, just stay still and don't move, until they calm down. Once they do, move slowly toward them again. Keep the tweezers sharp end inside your hand at first so they don't accidentally hurt themselves! Especially let them bite the tweezers and explore it. Keep at it! Birds are smart!

Даже если бы это было полезно делать, то это жестокость! 😢 Никак не понимаю я вас!

Yes you absolutely can❤️!! Lots of dye-free toys (preferably made of safe wood/grass), fresh fruits and veggies, spray millet, mist/plate baths, loads of attention, a place to fly to and fro whenever they like, and a safe home without larger predator animals like cats/dogs- they'll be pretty happy! Everyone's life is much sunnier with a budgie for sure :) they're little happy balls of sunshine encapsulated into soft, warm little bodies.
I wish I would have known about this before 😩 I nurture my pets and I definitely will spend hours pampering my budgies like this 💕

Oh that bird looks so happy at being preened!! ❤️
@pinfeathersgalore

Absolutely! Thank you for bringing this up❤️. I would also caution those to avoid any pink looking Pinfeathers, as those are still developing, and filled with nerve endings...thus are sensitive to even a slight touch.

I am so, so sorry to hear that😢 I have had that happen to me as well. You never get over a loss. It is not your fault. Keeping a bird unclipped is what makes them happy because they can fly off whenever they want. It's also good exercise. Hugs to you and my greatest condolences.

I was absolutely devastated.

Lol. He looks like he's in heaven
My parrot would bite the hecc out of the tweezers, what a good bond you two must have!❤️
