Gonna have to go see if you've ever done loquats... I grew up in Florida and they were mostly seen as an ornamental tree I think, but all of us kids would climb the trees and eat the loquats all the time.
These are also sometimes called golden strawberries. This is a good hint for sweetness when fully ripe they’re yellowish. And for fruits yellow color is very often a sign of higher sugar content. Like yellow fleshed watermelon.

Dragon fruit tastes like nothing in my opinion, but I love them! Lol!
I’ve got 1 small plant of pine berries. The berries you’re eating, aren’t fully ripe. Too crunchy. When they’re ripened properly, they’re very sweet and juicy. Just love them! I only get a few every year but that’s ok, I savour them! 😊❤️🇨🇦. Emmy, you should try making apple strawberry jam. Delicious!

@nicholem4831

@@angelinaboone103 in my experience with them, when fully ripened (which sadly Emmy’s store bought ones weren’t) they mostly have a sweet flavor upfront that’s not super identifiable but I would say is related to strawberries but the flavor punch comes at the end, almost once you’ve swallowed the berry. The finishing tasting notes are definitely reminiscent of pineapple. They’re absolutely incredibly delicious berries when fully ripened!

Emmy, pine berrys are strawberries. A cultivar is just a variety like sparkle berry,or honeyo.
@impastorr1354
Жыл бұрын
True, but I think it's fine to distinguish the two. Cauliflower and cabbage are different varieties of the same species too, yet we wouldn't refer to cabbages as cauliflower or vice-versa.
@joelroose2830
Жыл бұрын
Pineberry isn't even a specific variety, but is just used in marketing to refer to white cultivars of garden strawberry in general. The white cultivars supposedly have hints of pineapple in their flavour, so they were called pineapple strawberries = pineberries. So yes, they are exactly what they look like: white strawberries
@shawnsg
Жыл бұрын
@@impastorr1354 distinguishing isn't the same as saying pineberries *aren't* strawberries. Pineberry is a marketing name from the early 2010's. Pineberry is a strawberry the same way a red cabbage is a cabbage. Also, cabbage and cauliflower aren't equivalent examples for a lot of other reasons. Everything in the genus fragaria is called a strawberry but not everything in the genus brassica is called a cauliflower or cabbage.
@impastorr1354

@@shawnsg oop okay, my bad
At first I thought they were chilean white strawberries! But pineberries are a hybrid of a north american strawberry and the chilean white one, as I learned now motivated by your video :) Here the native white strawberry is an endangers species so that's why I was so surprised to see them in the US.
I think when fruit is white-ish in color the flavor is rather mild. I grow white blackberries (Snowbank) and they are very sweet and the birds do not touch them at all, but the flavor is not as complex and wonderful enough to put up with all of the thorns and root suckers that pop up several feet away.

Oh my gosh my favorite series!!! I’m so excited 🎉
I had these not too long ago. They were like a light strawberry flavor. Almost like those fizzy waters that are reminiscent but not by a lot of the thing they claim to taste like. That’s not a bad thing though, I like them
Really interesting! Thank you, Emmy, I appreciate experiencing fruity fruits vicariously through your videos 😊
I’ve googled these because I wanted to know what they tasted like and I’m so glad Emmy decided to post this. She’s so descriptive, it’s like I’m eating them myself. Thank you!
It’s a hybrid between two species of strawberry. In my book that makes it a strawberry. I don’t think it’s the same species involved as with the hybrid that’s the usual commercial strawberry, so one can argue that IT IS REALLY DIFFERENT but I’d say only a bit.
@joelroose2830
Жыл бұрын
Actually, it is the same species involved; they're Fragaria ×ananassa (F. virginiana × F. chiloensis), just like all the regular red supermarket strawberries. It's just that the white fruited varieties have not been grown commercially for such a long time that they are now being introduced as a novelty.

This is seriously my favorite series
I've grown these for years. Here in North Texas weather, they take over my strawberry patch like weeds! They make so many runners like grass and can smother out your strawberry patch. I have to grow them separately now. They are known to taste like a cross between pineapple and strawberry. I've never seen them in the grocery store and those look pretty big! A fun different thing to grow! 🍓
I’m glad your taste is back!! I got the same thing around the same time (but early Dec) and it took my taste away. I was going nuts, trying to eat, but not wanting to go through the blandness of it all. When you made you video explaining I was just starting to get some taste back. 3.5 full months after it all started and I’m glad I can taste normal-ish. There are a few things that taste slightly less intense or with “distorted” flavor, but 99% is back!! It’s great to be back to “normal”! 😂
Omg the SECOND I saw the pineberry the Fruity fruits theme got shouted 🤣❤️ My boyfriend is confused but I am so excited!
Nice to see you do taste tests again! I was struck down by COVID last week for the first time ever so I am at the end of it (I hope!). Things definitely taste off. It's like a can taste the minerals from the water in everything. I hope my taste fully goes back to normal though. I can't even enjoy a fried egg (my favorite).
I can’t believe I tasted a fruity fruit before Emmy! These are stinking delicious.
Thank you for sharing this video! I was at the grocery store a little while ago and came across the strawberries and I had to buy them because they looked just so interesting and then I went to Google what they were because I was under the impression also that maybe they were a cross between a pineapple mixed with a strawberry until I saw your video And I convinced that I’ll enjoy them especially if mine are as crunchy as yours! Thank you again for sharing the video. Have a blessed day and a good weekend.

Emmy I’m so happy for you 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I bought these at Trader Joe’s last weekend. I agree about the flavors.
Oh I used to love these, fruity fruits x the music. The fruit, the educating
Another fun and fabulous fruit
re: pineapple. I've heard you know they're ripe when you can easily pull a leaf from the top. It shouldn't be falling off but give with a lil pop and come out when you pull.
Strawberry texture for sure but i think they taste slightly like pears. They’re delicious and a nice winter treat.
Emmy! I kindly request wild plums for a Fruity Fruits episode! Growing up, my grandma had a wild plum tree in her yard and we made preserves out of them. They were SO good! ❤
I have some in the garden; they are so delicious and interestingly enough (I think) they need regular red strawberries nearby to cross pollinate as they are self sterile. The ones I have tasted had an intense strawberry flavour with a strong pineapple/citrus zing...but the benefit of growing them is that you can pick them when they are perfectly ripe - unless the birds get there first🙂
So glad you have your tastebuds back!
I grew these in my garden this year! I didn’t get many but they where pretty tasty
I miss fruity fruits!!!
Yay!!!! I missed the fruity fruits song!!!! I'm all for it! Let's learn about pineberries❤❤❤
Oh, how i’ve missed fruity fruits! now i want to go back and watch old episodes.
I literally just bought these at the grocery store yesterday! Haven't tried them yet :)
I love pineberrys so much! We get them all the time instead of strawberries. They are really good in smoothies 😋
I tried one for the first time yesterday and immediately thought it tastes like a light strawberry with the texture of a kiwi, I liked it
I tried these for the first time a couple weeks ago. They were very good. Like a less intense strawberry. I’d buy them again.
The way I was taught to pick a pineapple - other than the obvious looking for bruising and making sure it’s “healthy” - was to try to pick it up by one of the inside leaves. If the leaf detaches instantly instead of lifting if a little, then it’s good and ripe and you should get it.
Thank you. I never seen those; I will wanna try it.
I saw these in my grocery TODAY! I definitely should have grabbed them.
Hey Emmy, does anyone in your family ever feel like their mouth is burning from eating pineapple? Apparently some people are sensitive to the bromelain in them... Like myself. That's how I found out McDonalds strawberry banana smoothies have pineapple juice in them.

And typically, it’s only fresh pineapple that has the enzymes active enough to affect you. Canned or pineapple that’s been cut up already isn’t as strong. Also, don’t disregard that you could potentially be experiencing an allergic reaction, not just the bromelain

@@jordandavis2315 I forgot about fresh vs canned, you're right, it's why you can use canned pineapple in gelatin but not fresh. It won't set with fresh.
Love your vids. I'd love to see you try Saskatoon berries. They are also sometimes called Service Berries but the best, full flavoured berries are found in the prairies, specifically the Canadian prairies. Saskatoons would be very hard for you to get I'd expect and of course fresh Saskatoon are the best but they are really great in pie form too.
I've wanted to try these since I was a kid!!!

My family loves these pineberries. For Valentine's Day I dipped them in milk chocolate; delicious! Highly recommend.
Have you ever tried that banana that’s supposed to taste similar to the artificial banana flavoring in sweets today? You can apparently buy them and I want to try one so badly lol
Best way to check a pineapples ripeness is to sniff the base. They should be really strongly fragranced. Then try to tug out a leaf from the rosette. If it comes out easily, it’s perfectly ripe.
Wow. Just last night, I was watching one of your videos and thought about that Fruity theme song and wished there'd be another one. Then, lo and behold....
I'm happy to see you get back to fruity fruit segments would you consider trying to find black raspberries to do in your next fruity fruit segment?
I've actually always preferred paler, under-ripened strawberries. They have such a delicate sweetness and juiciness to them. Very subtle and not overpowering. But I do love all strawberries for the most part!

You should taste “Pomarosa”. My grandmother had a tree in her backyard. We had a long stick to knock them down which was so much fun. One of the best memories of my childhood. Still my favorite fruit ❤
First time I've seen this channel, and I like it. I'm glad you explained the pineapple part of the name -- when I saw the title of the episode, I thought it meant that the berries tasted like pine trees! :-D Bet those berries would make a good jellied sauce for meats, or cut up in a salad.
