Pimp My Filter #87 - Betta 1050 Canister Filter

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a decent filter and can be found on Amazon and Ebay as well as from lots of UK independent sellers.
Just search 'Betta 1050' on Google and the results will come up.
Unfortunately the prices are all over the places so I'd advise just picking the lowest price from a company with good reviews.
This filter will easily hold 2.3kg of Biohome Ultimate which makes it perfectly suitable for the recommended tank size of 230 litres 61 US gallons) for a normally stocked tank or 115 litres (30 US gallons) for a heavily stocked tank. It's a well made filter which holds a decent amount of filter media so it's one I'd recommend.
I've had emails from Hakim (who sent me the filter) and he said that by stacking the Biohome Ultimate media neatly he easily got an extra 300g into the two media trays. That takes the potential media capacity up to around 2.5kg - 2.6kg so it easily covers a normally stocked 230 litre tank as promised by the manufacturer / seller.
Betta products are sold by J&K aquatics and I traded with them for over 20 years when I had my aquatic shop so I'm familiar with their business model and it is genuine.
I wouldn't recommend a company of which I had no experience of or if I found out their promises and /or business model was blatantly fake ...... for example Seachem with 'prime' which starves bacteria and messes up the cycle, causing users to buy more of their products. That is a pharmaceutical business template. 'Safe and effective'? It never is ... and the tragic thing is that Seachem have many great products which I routinely recommend - it's a strange dichotomy for me considering how much damage their flagship product does.

VERY IMPORTANT:
*Avoid using water conditioners which claim to bind / remove / detoxify ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as it will have a pronounced starving effect on the bacteria. When bacteria is starved the population will be low as it grows in line with the available 'food'.
A normal conditioner will allow the bacteria to fully populate the whole system and take away the 'need' to add more bacteria after maintenance / water change.
Most people get conned into regularly using bacteria additives and that is simply to mask the side effects from a damaging conditioner and a failing filter.
Tapsafe, Aquasafe, API Stress Coat etc. is all you need when a tank is properly set up, a filter is suitably sized (and properly set up) and Nature is allowed to do what Nature does.*

A full cycle is completed by bacteria - the aerobic part of biological filtration which processes ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate followed by an anaerobic part which processes nitrate into soluble nitrogen which bubbles off to the atmosphere.
Therefore it requires a suitable amount of excellent quality filter media to be able to provide the environment for both aerobic AND anaerobic bacteria - that is what Biohome filter media does perfectly but even with such good media there are limitations and we recommend the following amounts for different stocking scenarios:
(1 US Gallon = 3.8 litres)
(1kg = 2.2 lbs)
Average community tropical aquarium = 1kg per 100 litres
Average coldwater aquarium = 1kg - 1.5kg per 100 litres
Predator aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Large cichlid aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Malawi / Tanganyikan aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Marine aquarium = 1.5kg - 2kg per 100 litres
Average mixed fish pond = 1kg per 200 litres
Average koi pond = 1kg per 150 litres

In this video you put the white ceramic rings at the bottom of the canister... how do you clean them? Or do you just leave them inside? What u do with the biohome trays while you clean the lowest tray with the mechanical filter foams, e.g. where do you put them? In water? Or just leave them for a few minutes? Thx for your answer

    You can give media trays a gentle shake in the bucket of water you've drained from the tank during normal maintenance and everything else would just be cleaned as and when it gets dirty. Fine pads would be replaced when they are clogged and they will dictate how often you maintain the filter. If you'd doing a deep clean you can empty everything out of the canister and clean it.

    It will be a community tank with fish I already have, which have lived together for ages in another 40 gallon tank. I'm going to split them up as they are growing and I want to give them more room! 2 angels about 4", 2 Electric Blue acaras about 4", 5 rainbow fish about 2 - 3", 5 denison barbs about 3", 2 green tiger barbs 2", 2 bristlenoses 3", 7 corys 2". One more important thing! Having checked the Betta filter, I think I might have the larger 1620 model. There's absolutely nothing written on the canister so I can't be certain but it's bigger than the Fluval 405, and having looked at the range of Bettas I think that's the one. I'm really not sure though! So... it will obviously hold more media than the 405. I could even use it in the existing 40 gallon tank which has a 307. The thing I'm worried about if I swap filters around with the new biohome ultimate media inside is how long it will take to get the cycle up and running, and will it upset any balance in the tank? Cheers, Shaun

  • @pondguru

    @pondguru

    5 ай бұрын

    Given that the under gravel filter needs to be maintained using a gravel cleaner the media above the filter plate needs to be a gravel-like structure - don't waste money putting a pellet shaped media (e.g. Biohome Ultimate) under the gravel as the gravel cleaner won't be ab;e to properly clean the system. If you want more efficiency from an under gravel system then go for the Biogravel as opposed to the Biohome Ultimate since the Biogravel will allow the gravel cleaner to surround it and clean the outside surfaces of each piece just as it would if it was a normal gravel.

    Plenty of people do that to great effect and it doesn't seem to affect the flow. However, it's something I don't show in the videos as spilling loose Biogravel from a tray is a nightmare to clean up compared to bigger media - it would generally be used in mesh bags in a canister filter.

I currently working on a plan of making a custom glass tank 6ft x 3ft x 2ft. Around 1000litres. It's going to be mainly just an Asian arowana tank. I might keep 2-4 Oscars with it so that it's accustomed to tank mates. I plan on adding more fish in the future. (my other channel) You'd need 2 x 4500 filters for a well stocked 1000 litre tank but please avoid stocking Arowana since they will be way too big for that tank. I see so many 'Arowana' tanks of similar size and the fish are cramped and unhappy. Don't stock Arowana - I know that they are a 'status' fish but setting a tank up to be Natural with happy fish gets way more respect from people with the ability to think. The vast majority of 'Arowana Tanks' are akin to seeing a tiny guy on a housing estate walking out with two huge dogs straining at their leashes - you don't need that sort of nonsense on your soul, man.

    Ideally any large fish needs a MINIMUM of 3 x the maximum body length for the smallest dimension of the tank or pond (with other dimensions of the tank / pond being much larger). Therefore if the fish you're keeping get to 2ft long the smallest dimension of the tank would be 6ft. Hopefully that will put into context what you're planning to do since housing fish (or any pets) in a restrictive environment will simply result in more stress, physical deformity and more problems. .

    I'm sure that as long as you know the internal diameter of the flexible pipe you could get generic fittings in black to fit that size online no problem.

    Surely if you use the rings in the bottom of the filter there is no way any broken bits can get through the 3 trays (full of foams and media) and end up in the impeller?

    @@pondguru yes I'm certian, I have ru the 750 then this one since I kept fish. This happened on both and what fixed it was just leaving that bottom section empty. I've ran that task about 5 years now and only had those 2 so got to know them well.

    Why doesn't anyone show how to install it all the way to and inside the top of the tank ? Where do the hoses go ?

  • @pondguru

    @pondguru

    There are loads of manufacturers videos showing where the inlet and outlet pipes go in the tank and there are different ideas regarding to which side of the tank the inlet and outlet should be located. I'd say use the inlet and outlet on the same side of the tank and that gives the water a chance to move all around the tank before being drawn back in by the intake pipe.

    @@jacquelinemcmillan2793 (my other channel) as long as the detritus is ending up being sucked into the filter intake it's all good. Structure (rocks / wood / plants) will affect how the flow of water travels around a tank so just go with a set up which works well for you - every tank is different.

    hi can you pimp a Ziss filter or equivalent

  • @pondguru

    @pondguru

    5 ай бұрын

    You could do but the filter is designed to be run by an air pump so is best suited to being a moving bed. Ideally it would have way more media in there compared to the small amount which comes with the filter. A moving bed filter only processes the ammonia and nitrate so it's only doing half a job. I've got a double column hang on the back filter which I've considered making a video about as it can be powered by a small USB pump but to be honest for the cost involved in buying all the parts it would be much better just buying one of the HOB-500 filters from All Pond Solutions as they hold way more media and are easier to set up and maintain. I can't believe they are still only around £25.
