Pilot Bearing Removal Using BREAD - Jeep Wrangler
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Removing my Pilot Bearing from the flywheel using bread, a bolt, tape and a mallet. In my case the pilot bearing had not failed, but since my transmission is already dropped it is a good measure to go ahead and replace the bearing. Pilot bearings are generally cheap ($10) or less, but require the transmission to be removed in order for removal and installation. Vehicle in Video: 2010 Jeep Wrangler.

Oh my goodness, this was a life saver. The pilot bearing tool I got from harbor freight didn’t fit my 97 s-10. Using grease & bread didn’t really work & was super messy. I couldn’t fit a piece of a bolt & yank on the end of it because it kept slipping & I couldn’t fit anything bigger in their. But bread only & the tape was exactly what I needed. I owe ya a good beer & I need one too after this pos. Thank You!!!
I want to know what the first guy to this was thinking or what led to stuffing bread into the pilot bushing

I used to drive truck and I watched one of our mechanics pull one with wet toilet paper. Same concept.

Something Something Something... wife made lunch the first guy to do this didn't like but didn't want to face her rath if he brought it home or lied and threw it out... Something Something Something Genius is born.
Use damp bread. Hydraulic pressure works best.
Yes, to my amazement, it actually worked on my 88 BMW. I used a hamburger roll and an aluminum drive pin I made on my lathe.
That was awesome!! Thank you, I just got mine out with 1 1/2 pieces of bread and a half inch extension. 3 lb sledge hammer. Bread cleaned out the hole and came out in one piece!
I literally just did this after watching your video! Worked like a champ. I used bearing grease and bread. Thanks for the help!!

I was thinking adding some grease might add to the pressure hold. It's really the moisture in the bread being compressed as water displaces and the bread is the moldable seal. Neat trick
Great trick worked on yd25 manual engine on auto conversion as bushings are different
I've used grease and a tight fitting dowel, same basic principle. Pack it as full as you can, give the dowel a few good smacks with a BFH and out it comes.
Just completed this project. With a rented puller. Very glad I didn’t try this method first. Took me all of 20 seconds with the right tool.

& you still have a thrust bearing
Not bad it's work very well thanks bro 👍
I've always just used packing grease and a socket flipped backwards with the extension towards me. Never has it ever taken more than 1 good whack with a decent sized hammer.
Ok, I can honestly say that this is something I would have never thought of! Just goes to show - where there is a will, there is a way!
Thanks for sharing. Works like a dream!
The bread 🥪 is magic 😂 thanks
My dad was actually telling about this when we replaced the clutch on my TJ
Wheat or rye ??
U can use plyers to hold the bolt so you don't smash your hand
We used a grease gun when I was a young man. Pump it full of grease . A socket with extention to plug the hole in the socket. Smack it a few times pops them right out. Bread is a new one 4 me.
yes it works !
So this essentially works on the hydraulic principle right? And couldnt you also use bits of damp paper?
Does Warburtons work just aswel ?
Substitute grease for bread works better lot easier to clean out and pre lubricates for your next bearing going in
* slowly clapping* I love it

Yeah, that part about you having no puller.. I have every kind of puller and they do not really work on the AX15 in my Jeep. I am trying this with grease first, then bread. Also, the bearing is not pressed into the flywheel on the AX15. It is pressed into the back of the crank, which means removing the flywheel does nothing.
Nice trick. I will never attempt this project 🤣
You can use bearing greese as well .same method bread..

Yeah I just bearing grease. Easily cleaned up with degreasers and you don’t have to dig bread chunks out for 5 min. But a intriguing video nonetheless. I guess you could use a lot of household items if you were in a pinch. Never thought about it really 🤔

@@AutenBrian3I’ve done both bread and grease. By far, bread is the easier cleanup.
Will a dent puller work ?

this is too entertaining.
Use wheel bearing grease. It wont compress like the bread. I use a socket because there are a lot of choices for different size pilot bearings. Wrap the socket with plastic from a garbage bag, put a rag over it keep the grease from splattering and hit it.

Bread is better than grease. Not only is it easier to get bread in there. It is also MUCH easier to clean up afterwards.
how do you do that?
Go team rugged!!
I'm a machinist and I have removed small sleeves from blind holes like this using nothing more than grease and a slip fitting pin or punch. A bit messy sometimes if the pin is a bit too lose. It works by the hydrolic pressure of the grease in the bottom of the hole pressing the sleeve out. Never seen the bread trick before. I bet bread or cookie dough would work better. The more solid the material the better.

Cool
In my experience, heavy grease works better than bread, just use eye protection. YMMV

Nice
This trick works but your thrust bearing is taking a beating

what’s you guy’s Go-To Bread for these projects? Personally, I use: Sunbeam White Thin-Slice for US Made Gas-Burners, Hardy Wheat for Ford Pickups, Rye-Pumpernickel Blend for Diesel Vehicles, Pita or Focaccia Bread on European-Made Autos & raw Pillsbury dough for Japanese Manufactured cars. I tried a Croissant once, but it Flaked Out on me and left more of a mess than the raw dough.

Some vehicles are particularly challenging, BMW's for example require Gluten Free Almond Flour GMO bread, and the only thing that will work on a Lexus is Panera Bread.
How many pieces of bread did you use lol

Is no one else worried about having bread jammed in there where you can't see it?
What happens if you hit the flywheel surface with the mallet?

Clay or play-doh works better.

can i eat the bread now?
Not a Keto friendly method
Greese is way better to do that, no air in grease like there is in bread!!

I'll just pull the flywheel in 3min... press the bearing out with a vice or C clamp and NOT BEAT the hell out of my lower crank assembly... if you work at a shop I hope you only push a broom because this is sad 😒 Btw went from joke videos to this... ty KZread
