Pilot Bearing Removal Using BREAD - Jeep Wrangler

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Removing my Pilot Bearing from the flywheel using bread, a bolt, tape and a mallet. In my case the pilot bearing had not failed, but since my transmission is already dropped it is a good measure to go ahead and replace the bearing. Pilot bearings are generally cheap ($10) or less, but require the transmission to be removed in order for removal and installation. Vehicle in Video: 2010 Jeep Wrangler.

Oh my goodness, this was a life saver. The pilot bearing tool I got from harbor freight didn’t fit my 97 s-10. Using grease & bread didn’t really work & was super messy. I couldn’t fit a piece of a bolt & yank on the end of it because it kept slipping & I couldn’t fit anything bigger in their. But bread only & the tape was exactly what I needed. I owe ya a good beer & I need one too after this pos. Thank You!!!

Use damp bread. Hydraulic pressure works best.

I was thinking adding some grease might add to the pressure hold. It's really the moisture in the bread being compressed as water displaces and the bread is the moldable seal. Neat trick

I've used grease and a tight fitting dowel, same basic principle. Pack it as full as you can, give the dowel a few good smacks with a BFH and out it comes.

We used a grease gun when I was a young man. Pump it full of grease . A socket with extention to plug the hole in the socket. Smack it a few times pops them right out. Bread is a new one 4 me.

Yeah, that part about you having no puller.. I have every kind of puller and they do not really work on the AX15 in my Jeep. I am trying this with grease first, then bread. Also, the bearing is not pressed into the flywheel on the AX15. It is pressed into the back of the crank, which means removing the flywheel does nothing.

Yeah I just bearing grease. Easily cleaned up with degreasers and you don’t have to dig bread chunks out for 5 min. But a intriguing video nonetheless. I guess you could use a lot of household items if you were in a pinch. Never thought about it really 🤔

Use wheel bearing grease. It wont compress like the bread. I use a socket because there are a lot of choices for different size pilot bearings. Wrap the socket with plastic from a garbage bag, put a rag over it keep the grease from splattering and hit it.

I'm a machinist and I have removed small sleeves from blind holes like this using nothing more than grease and a slip fitting pin or punch. A bit messy sometimes if the pin is a bit too lose. It works by the hydrolic pressure of the grease in the bottom of the hole pressing the sleeve out. Never seen the bread trick before. I bet bread or cookie dough would work better. The more solid the material the better.

what’s you guy’s Go-To Bread for these projects? Personally, I use: Sunbeam White Thin-Slice for US Made Gas-Burners, Hardy Wheat for Ford Pickups, Rye-Pumpernickel Blend for Diesel Vehicles, Pita or Focaccia Bread on European-Made Autos & raw Pillsbury dough for Japanese Manufactured cars. I tried a Croissant once, but it Flaked Out on me and left more of a mess than the raw dough.
