PILLAR OF OPPRESSION - Climbing the Westbank Wall & Influencer Ethics

⚠️ Warning - If you think to climb this route - check with the Walledooff hotel porter. We have been told that snipers have been placed on the Bethlehem Inn hotel so you might get shot.
What should you do if you are an 'influencer' and you come across injustice?
This is a film attempting to answer this question against the backdrop of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
If you think other people should watch this film - please share it!
I often see climbers getting paid to go to places of conflict supported by tourist-boards and governments with human rights abuses/insane misogyny/political oppression etc.. It bothers me that these influential climbers shirk what feels like a moral responsibility to acknowledge the reality of life in the places they visit - rather than simply support the narrative of 'everything is ok here' which their paymasters need to maintain their position of power and influence within the international community.
The lastest in the story of Israel & Palestine story is that a Trump-emboldened Netanyahu promises to annexe land in the Westbank. If he wins the election this week, things could get much worse for Palestinians, the international reputation of Israel and probably also for the young Israeli conscripts who are forced to do much of the dirty work.

Thank you for an amazing video and for giving Marwan the space to speak. It's so easy to despair over what seems like an impossible struggle, but when I hear the hope in Marwan's voice, it lifts the spirit and I am reminded of the goodness in human nature. We are not born hateful, but it is taught to us by those who seek to control us. Many Israelis are aware that their government purposefully creates conflict and fear to stay in power. Someday, there will be a turning point.

You tube is the real reality tv, so to speech, and this is why they are beginning to Marshall the channel as the power is really here... . traditional reporting understands the status quo and therefore plays the game to educate within the given parameters of power and economics ...

You have mentioned you have done a research, but there are a lot of inaccuracies within your video, and over all you had only represented one side of the story. Most of the video is very populist in its attitude as well. First of all, this wall is very short. Its only exist within the borders of Jerusalem city. Along the other parts of the green line border there is a fence, and along the most parts there is nothing. Overall the situation in Israel is very complicated. You cannot simplefy the problem as you have done in your video. Im talking as an Israeli Jew who's ancestors lived within the boundaries of Israel for at least 500 years, much more than most of the Palestinians can attest for themselves. The circumstances has brought the Israeli nation to hold this regime. You cant tell the full story without a full representation of at least 150 years of the Jews history and Israeli politics. The circumstances has brought the situation on us, and there is no simple or magic solution to it. To boycott Israeli products wont help to solve the problem, to ban weapon commerce wont help as well, and sure not climbing on walls (even that I am a very keen climber myself). What might help is bringing the Israelis and Palestinians to closer relations. I am sorry to say that, but you are just creating more eerines when you represents the story in this particular way.

There is a very simple solution to this quagmire. Since the 2 state solution is now impossible how about one state which is secular, democratic, equal, for every Israeli and Palestinian? Like let's say like how every other country is in the world?

Thanks for posting Nate, I found it so hard to watch and only managed about 15 mins of it as the injustice makes me feel so powerless and angry. We've all long known that Israel has been very unfair (to be polite!) to the Palestinians, and have stolen land, and killed with no repercussions or justice. Yet, if we dare speak about this, we're labeled anti semitic, or worse. It is indeed incredibly complex and I know that there are Israelis who also want peace, and I pray for the day when that can happen. I fear that the damage that Israels policies have created will have left a lot of muslims with hate, anger and revenge on their minds, so peace is going to take a long time in coming.

New to climbing and as an immigrant from a colonised country one thing I’ve always thought about and sometimes felt conflicted about the climbing community’s maybe underdeveloped discourse of ethics relating to climbing in non western places (use of traditional land - post colonial attitudes of entitlement). This was something I thought about watching your last video climbing in Israel/Palestine ( not saying there was something wrong with it). • @NateMurphy

Thanks Stuart, actually I think it does include the Israeli perspective -perhaps not as much but when Israel has total power over the lives of those in the Westbank - it is their behaviour from a position of power which needs calling out. Punishing and humiliating a people after you have won a war does little for long term peace.

  • @ThomasRodde
    @ThomasRodde4 жыл бұрын

Nate, congrats, a point well made. I do believe that influencers like you should not avoid this kind of topic out of fear of losing an influencee or two, or even a sponsor. Rather lose them and gain long-term credibility as a result. I’m biased towards one side here (who isn’t?), and I fully expected you to be as well-just differently. So I wasn’t sure if I even wanted to watch this video. Was then positively surprised that you were only discussing the recent evolution of this conflict, and not the whole story back to the Balfour Declaration, and yes, I fully agree with you here. Giving at least some room to the Israeli side however might have been of benefit. Always two sides to a story.

Bruh I get your reasoning but it comes off as a bit self righteous. Having admitted you knew little about the conflict, you then proceed to judge who is right and wrong based on talking to only one side, while also failing to consider the geopolitics involved. By offering overly simple explanations for a complex issue, you bring huge bias into your documentary making it completely one-sided.

I spent most my time in Israel climbing with Israelis. I was surprised that with a few hours research I could know about the basic functioning of the West Bank occupation than than most of the Israeli people I met - and this isn't the subjective parts - just large simple things like how the West Bank is governed. On that basis I decided to represent the story which is not part of the current dominant narrative - for obvious reasons. I would also note that every single narrated statistic/fact comes from an Israeli-based source. It took weeks of full-time research to reach the position in this film and the hard truth is that if you win (which Israel in all intents and purposes, has) it is simply wrong to use your strength to dominate, oppress and take more from the losing side. You have to ask, what is the end result of this behavior? How will the conflict ever properly end? Even if Israel wishes to assimilate the West Bank into Israel itself - do you think people will forgive and forget? Do you think that 2.4 million people will just accept it? Of course not - instead of acting magnamonously they are acting as bullies and people know when things are unfair. Just remember that there are 18 year olds who are too young to remember the 2nd Intifada but are treated the same as if they perpetrated it. How do you control a people who you instead of fostering reconciliation and peace have fostered more hate? The end result is delivering them a totalitarian police state with an apartheid base - and for that to be enabled everyone has to be afraid all the time, including Israelis - who also have to pay for it. It is bad for everyone. There are two aspects of human fairness hardwired in to our brains: the wrongness to take advantage of one’s strength to exploit weaker people, and the appeal of distributions where the reward is proportional to the contribution. This film falls in to the former.

@@NateMurphy I appreciate the thorough research. I've watched almost all your videos. I do have to say that as someone who sits on both sides of the fence, the story was 90% one sided. Would have appreciated a more balance look by speaking to Israelis who are pro Palestinian. I agree, many Israeli's have a biased opinion and perspective, as do Palestinians. There's a perspective they both live everyday and are fed by their news sources and families. Hence the reason to find Palestinians who understand the Israeli side, and Israeli's that understand the Palestinian side. As an Israeli myself living in Canada, I took a trip to the places you climbed, and luckily had a friend who was Israeli but advocated for Palestinian rights. That was the first time I felt like I was hearing the Palestinian side. Something to consider as well with using the term settlers...any climbing you've done in the united states like "Yosemite" were previously Indigenous land that was overtaken by European settlers. But we still climb there, and we don't use the term settlers to describe Americans. Food for thought.

@@elanmarko8831 Hey Elan - I went to bed thinking about your comment though it was simmering long before in my mind. Climbers in Yosemite and where I live in Bishop, are settlers. That is fact. It always will be that way, just in the same that Israeli's are settlers. Bishop is an interesting place because we have a reservation and what natives, in this case the Pauite tribe, weren't killed off in the colonial genocide... are here today. The Buttermilks main used to be their sacred site for marriages. Today, it's overrun by climbers. Rarely, do you see any natives there anymore. Maybe in the US, the term doesn't get thrown around as much because it's less recent then the occupation of Palestine and we also killed the VERY large majority of indigenous people in our settler colonialism conquests. I think what's happening and has been happening in Israel IS textbook to what the US did, and our hand are bloody and hearts... dark. It's devastating to see what's happening there and has been happening there for the last 75 years and more...it's devastating because we've seen all over the world what settler colonialism does and it marginalizes, destroys, creates multi-generational trauma, and slaughters non-white groups. Anyone with a decent moral compass can watch what's happening in Gaza, the fear in the eyes of these children, the systematic racism the settlements breed in the West Bank, and blatant disregard for human life, can see the injustice in this.

There are many sides and huge amount of nuance that require context, history, and an understanding of both the politics of Israel, Palestine, the surrounding Arab nations and the US. Not to mention geopolitical tensions, economic interests and the extra element that within the small piece of land that is Israel and Palestine there are a large amount of the worlds most holy sites.

Nate, just watched the film its very well produced and thought out. My thoughts: you have obviously spent most of your time at the Palestinian side hearing their injustices and thoughts, of course this will create a bias, go to the Israeli side and find out their injustices and thoughts. I know a lot about the arab-Israeli conflict and was always taught during my studies not to take a side, why? because like you mentioned this conflict is so old its crazy, it spans back millenia, and has so much pain and suffering from both sides. I assure you the Israeli have suffered tremendously in this conflict to, go back and ask them. I dont want the comment to be to long I could go on and on. In my opinion your film is ONE SIDED, like the side of the wall you spent your time at and any conflict ever , thats a fact and why it , in my opinion, doesnt paint the exact picture.

Hi there, Maybe talking people from Israel would have made a for a more nuanced video. However, I disagree with the fact that just because this conflict is old and complex one cannot put that aside to show the situation as it is today. And I think that was the aim of this video. Why should the actions of passed generations dictate the life of Palestinian children today? By refusing to "take sides" what is your message? "It's complicated so it is ok". I might be ill-informed but the balance of power seems to tip in the favour of Israel " like a big fat fucking retarded fucking black girl on a see-saw opposite... a dwarf" (that's a quote from a movie not very PC out of context but the movie is great "In Bruges" if you want to check it out). What would an Israeli have to say that would in any way justify the current situation? It is very much Israel's responsibility to try for peace as they hold most of the cards. But hey that's just my opinion on the situation and I am by no means an expert.

Yes, the ‘rational’ reason is to create a demographic reality in Jerusalem where Israeli Jews have a majority by building the wall to include Jewish communities (like Pisgat Ze’ev) and exclude Arab ones (like al-Ram). The UN estimates that 30,000 Palestinians cross the wall illegally every single day to work under the table in Israel. This does not include Palestinians that cross with a permit. Now, knowing that fact, make a compelling argument that the wall is for “security.” It would be difficult....

Nate, i invite you to visit Shiloh. I' ll show you my reality behind the wall: Molotov cocktails, stone throwing, knife terror, and terrorists who enter communities and murder families in their homes. I am 24. Terrorists threw a Molotov cocktail at me ten minutes from my house and miraculously I live. My girlfriend's father is brain-damaged and blind because terrorists shot him on the vehicle. My girlfriend's brother was murdered when a terrorist entered his "yeshiva" and planned to shoot everyone. Another girlfriend's father was brutally stabbed to death. A terrorist entered tvillage and murdered half a family. The head of an 18-year-old girl was beheaded as she walked through the woods. These are my brothers, and they are all citizens. You can choose to ignore it as an influencer, but this reality exists. This is my westbank.

I also come from outside. You cannot understand that people tend to take the side of the weaker party. The attacks and deaths you report are sad and there is no doubt about that.On the other hand, you live in an area that according to international law does not belong to Israel, no matter what Trump says and no matter how many Israeli soldiers protect you. Using mathematics for the dead is a simplification, but if you do it nevertheless, there are almost 100 dead Palestinians for every dead Israeli.

This is a big departure from your usual videos, nonetheless it's cool to see you trying something different! I think it's sad that you are using your platform as an influencer to peddle a message with no balance. As far as I can see you took everything your Palestinian interviewees said without challenge. Is the situation between Israel and Palestine fucked up, yeah. However israel is the ONLY state in the middle East where peoples of white, Arab, black ethnicities live together in relative harmony. It is the ONLY state where religious freedoms are enshrined within the fundamental founding documents of the state. Israel has arabs, Muslims sitting within the Knesset. The west bank and Gaza strip are administered by governments which are, and have been for some time, absolutely set against a two state solution, and have supported terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. Does this justify the use of force by the Israelis in all circumstances, no it does not. Does the behaviour of settlers contravene international law, yes. But you can't have it both ways. If the settlements are not Israeli territory, then the 'crimes' committed on that territory do not fall within the Israeli legal system. If they are Israeli territory, and thus the crimes do fall within the Israeli legal system then what exactly is the problem with the settlements? (For context, I do not believe that settlement building is acceptable in its current guise.) You criticise a 'zionist' ideology but fail to consider and criticise the extreme Islamic ideology which has led to brutal acts against Israeli civilians also. I'm saddened to see you're promoting the BDS movement, who's leaders are on camera as stating they want to destroy the state of Israel, drive out the inhabitants (Jews) and take back the land. I'd urge you to look more deeply into the BDS movement and the nuances of the situation. It is difficult to tell from the film how much research or knowledge you have on the subject.
