Pike Fishing at Llandegfedd Reservoir

Спорт

In this video you join Owain Rees of Clubmate as he tells his story of the last 4 years worth of fishing on arguably Britains most iconic Pike venue, Llandegfedd Reservoir in South Wales. This amazing water is home of two British Pike Records including the current record held by Roy Lewis at an incredible weight of 46lb 13oz.
We would like to take a moment to thank the team at Llandegfedd who allowed us to create this film and prolong the fishing on the venue for years to come. Thanks guys.
We would also like to thank Carl Garret for supplying the incredible footage of his 44lb Monster caught back in the early 90's. Thanks Carl, incredible footage!

I'm got a boat booked for March on the pike. Even though its not the same place it used to be, I fly fished it for 20 years until new management messed the trout stocking program up with tiny 1lb trout instead of 2-3lb and over priced season tickets. Resulting in no one fishing it no stocking 🙆‍♂️

If it’s ever to be anywhere near what it used to be it relies on more trout anglers using the venue and continued monitoring and limitation of the pike fishing. Nowhere near enough anglers using the venue for both species to continue for it to be viable as far as I can tell which is why this video is public.

@@owainrees3809 Just blitz on by me describing the fish as superb! I didn't mean to offend, just found it slightly humorous. With the amount of baitfish in Llandegfedd there was always going to be a number of huge Pike in there, although not many by the sounds of it, so well done on persevering and finding them! As far as the regulars go - you always get them, I've fished loads of places with seriously quality fish in them to be told by other anglers "There's no big Pike in here" or "All the Perch died years ago" only to go on to find them myself. Some people like putting you down, others just haven't got a clue! As I said, bloody well done, and I apologise for putting you on the defensive! Tight lines

It’s not a secret, but it has essentially been forgotten. Only a handful of people now fish there for pike. The trout fishing at llandegfedd is the same. Back in the 90’s and early 2000’s there were over 30 boats out every weekend without fail and a good number of boats would also be out during the weekdays. Now there are only 2-3 people fishing it a week and some weeks there is nobody fishing it.

those 40lb pike werent that long/old so its only because they were putting so many trout in at the time.. also the red spots are from being layed down on the ground/a mat. if u look back those fish looked healthy when u landed them and then all red after weighing. Maybe bring out some proper stuff next time and hurry up a bit they aint no carp u can lay out on the deck for 10 minutes. U need to keep these fish in the water as much as possible. I dont even weigh my pike.. just measure and put them back within 60 seconds, its a lot better for the fish. Also when ur not british its about the length and not the weight only. Also that was 4 seasons mate.. ive caught more/bigger this summer.. and a lot of big zander while doing it.. maybe find some better spots! (and i thought my fishing was hard).

@@owainrees3809 I dont live in the uk, so summer here was not so hot.. maybe over there it was.. I stil wont change my opinion though.. there is a reason al those big pike were caught 1 time and then never seen again. Pike dont handle long weigh/foto sessions that well.. a carp doesnt care at all.. but pike has very delicate skin. If u catch a lot of fish its best to not use a net, never lay a fish down unless u really have to. Ive caught loads of pike this year.. maybe measured 1-2 of them, handlanded and then put them straight back. That way the fish doesnt get damaged. But nice fishing though enjoyed the vid anyways!

@@larsvegas1505 The fish in the cover image was caught 12 months later, bigger and it looked immaculate. There’s a fish which was caught by me at 21lb, 23lb, 26lb three consecutive years in a row and looks absolutely fine. If you’re referring to the historical footage of Carl Garrett, I think it’s fairly obvious pike fishing has moved on since 1988 and yes, the fish were on the bank far too long. Carl’s fish was actually the fish that went on to break the UK record when recaught by Gareth Edwards, again at a bigger size though a year later. You can take a photo and weigh a pike quickly and not kill it, perhaps you should improve your own fish handling skills if you can’t manage that.

Sorry but you’ve misread the rule mate... It doesn’t say you can’t chin big pike. It states not to chin them and let them hang freely. This we did not do. The rule is stating that they must be supported, which if you watch it again, EVERY fish caught was supported with the other hand. This is a standard and safe way of handling pike, especially larger fish. It ensures you have a good solid grip of the fish and prevents you from dropping them if they thrash around. Also, every fish was returned safely and as quickly as possible which is the reason for the limited footage. Fish safety is and always will be the highest concern 👍 Thank you for watching the video 😊👍
