How to catch big pike and perch with Matt Hayes!

Спорт

The UK's No1 angler - Matt Hayes - targets specimen pike and perch on Eyebrook Reservoir in Leicestershire. It's the first time the trout venue has opened to predator anglers and some of the country's finest big-fish men were there in anticipation of fireworks...

    okay i have a story im 11 years olld and just today i went fishing on my own and a didn't catch anything but there was a yellow perch biting at my artificial bait and then i cast out and my line breaks so i put on a hook and keep fishing then i thought to my self i didn't catch anything yet and when my mom and sister came to get me i grabbed my fishing rod but i saw the broken line and so i reeled it in because my fishing hook was still on there and sure enough i felt tugging on the line and i kept on pulling it in and there was a 2 pound yellow perch there and my mom and my sister watched the hole thing

    I believe the "warm water no bites" is just a myth. I have a cabin near a big freshwater lake in Norway, and last summer it was record temperatures in and above water. I thought we'd struggle getting anything but it was the complete opposite. Both trout and perch bit like never before!

Amazingly each time when speed boat passes by making a hughe wave 🌊 i had best bites. Some how pikes lears how to hunt on waves. It was a trout lake,and pike was a monsters. Okay so I get that pike stay deep in cold water. What I want to know is A). Do they stay near drop offs or do they just go to the deepest part of the lake and chill there. and C.) What happens during the late evening? Do they come close to shore or more towards the surface? Or are they just always always in the cool bottom part of the lake. Advice is needed ASAP since it's so late into the summer. Please help!!!!!!

    +BackCountryBrdr they come closer to the shore the colder it gets in the water. At around 7-8°C it's perfect for shallow water fishing. Wading works well for us in Sweden. Best fishing end nov, beg. dec.

    They don't always stay deep in cold water. The cold water bears more oxygen, so they can tolerate warmer when they are feeding near oxygen rich water. Here in Canada, you can find smaller & younger (up to say 60 cm) Northern Pike in waters as warm as maybe 15 celsius. The big mature ones stay in cooler waters, unless there is a nice bubbly stream or waterfall or something. They love to hang out near the drop-off in the cool, and rise to snap up a passing treat. Early in the year they will hang out amongst weed beds along with Musky at shallow depths. If you catch them when the ice is off, and they have all spawned, you can catch great big pike all day in the shallows. I caught 3 pike over 36 inches in 20 minutes off the cottage dock one fine March morning. And that is not especially good pike fishing typically.

    My tip big pike like big lures also if you like fishing in the winter time try fishing with dead bait in or near a haven roaches and bream usualy go there to sit out the winter the pike will follow they are a bit slow because of the cold water thats why dead bait has my personal prefference .

    What I'd like to know is this: Matt says he suspects the pike staying down low in the colder parts of the water. He's caught several on a jerkbait, though, so I was wondering if those are really deep sinking jerkbaits, or if he actually caught them close to the surface still?

  • @skateboardingjesus4006

    @skateboardingjesus4006

    2 жыл бұрын

    The thermocline in some lakes isn't that deep and even less so where there's current mixing. He said he was stripping the jerk-bait in fast, which would easily get it deep enough. I've noticed pike more inclined to take a faster lure merely out of competitive instinct. These predators have evolved with a keen awareness of other predators making the most of missed opportunities.

    In my experience in warm water conditions fish look for oxygen. Oxygen is found in shallow water near the suface not in the depths. Water temperature is irrelevant when life giving oxygen is needed. And when oxygen is in short supply in really hot weather fish are often seen surfacing and sometimes dying so I don't agree.
