Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail
A spectacular free outdoor walk-thru holiday lights experience!
The night skies light up each year during the annual Pigeon Forge Winterfest celebration. The three-month-long event features more than six million holiday lights and is one of the country’s largest free outdoor lights festivals.
Millions of visitors’ flock to the Great Smoky Mountains to experience Winterfest. The Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail expansion brings the total number of holiday light displays to 45 located along or near the city’s Parkway, Pigeon Forge’s major thoroughfare.
The Winterfest celebration kicks off on Nov. 9 and will continue through Feb. 18.
The Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail
The Wonders of Light walking trail is a free outdoor walk-thru holiday lights experience. The flat, paved and pet-friendly trail treats walkers to more than 25 nature-inspired musical light displays featuring colorful butterflies, larger-than-life wildflowers, and even Old Man Winter.
Vibrant snowflakes, bright stars, snow people, and a 20-foot-tall ice fountain light the way as deer, bears and squirrels-ranging in size from 13 to 19 feet tall-frolic alongside the path. Lights that mimic fireflies and butterflies dance in the trees overhead, creating one of winter’s most incredible experience.
The Wonders of Light Walking Trail opened in 2022 with 20 larger-than-life nature-themed outdoor lights displays along Pigeon Forge’s scenic Riverwalk nature trail. The new displays included walk-thru arches, a colorful 52-foot-long caterpillar, larger-than-life flowers, Old Man Winter and a 20-foot-tall ice fountain.
For 2023, five new light displays will be unveiled when the trail opens on Nov. 9. Joining the trail are a fun fly fisherman with leaping trout, a span of woodland creatures, additional fireflies, and a 90-foot-wide section of colorful wildflowers, butterflies, flowers and mushrooms.
Six deciduous trees will be illuminated, too, increasing the walkway’s glow power. The returning 52-foot-long caterpillar is joined by large-scale inchworms, ladybugs, and mushrooms amid blades of grass, expanding this single display’s width to 90 feet.
This Winterfest addition offers something free and festive for visitors to experience with their families and friends this holiday season.
Getting to the Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail
The Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail will span the Riverwalk from the access point in the city’s Municipal Parking Lot (located at 2936 Teaster Lane between the LeConte Center and The Island in Pigeon Forge) to the approximate intersection of Old Mill Avenue and Butler Street (near the Old Mill Historic Square).
Visitors can access the light displays via the six-mile out-and-back Riverwalk which has several access points, including one at the city’s Patriot Park, the LeConte Center at Pigeon Forge, the Old Mill and the city’s Municipal Parking Lot, the latter of which also offers free parking for trail guests.
The Winterfest Wonders of Light Walking Trail is paved and mostly flat. It is pet- (leashes required) and wheelchair-friendly.

Thanks Ryan for highlighting the hours the trail and Craft tent are open. You are the only one to do so and the only one to show the Craft tent. Coming down tomorrow Sun., 11-12-23. I am staying 2 blocks from the Old Mill so my plan is to take the Trolley to the Island that way I only have to walk one way. Great coverage. My favorite part is the sparkling butterflies. Thanks for sharing another adventure that I am unable to attend. Ya'll are so lucky and blessed to live in an area with so much to see and do. We have the beaches in the NW Florida Panhandle, but that's about it without traveling quite a ways to enjoy anything else. When you have lived here all your life, the beaches just get old. Same old thing all the time. The white lights are pretty, but you have to admit a touch of color just makes it more like Christmas. Thanks for the walking tour, the band, and fireworks. Please pray for our family. We had to move my 96 year old father to an assisted living facility. He is in the beginning stage of dementia. He is not adjusting well to the new facility. He is a navy veteran. God Bless you and your family. ❤️

In 1810, Revolutionary War veteran Mordecai Lewis obtained a 151 acre land grant along the Little Pigeon River near the heart of what is now Pigeon Forge. In 1827, Lewis's son-in-law, Issac Love (1783-1854), established the iron forge for which the city was eventually named. So I think it only fitting that the caterpillar be named Issac after Issac Love the founder of Pigeon Forge.

I also had several relatives including both my grandparents and my step father and father who were in the military. I'd like to remember and honor them on this day as my step father and both grandfather's are passed away but my father is still living. And remember all those who are or have served in the military thanking them for the sacrifice they made and are making for the freedoms we have to enjoy in this great country. Patriot Park also is where the main trolly station is located. You could walk one end to the other and take a trolley back to you car if you wanted. You would just need to pay the $1 Trolley Fee for the NORTH PARKWAY route. We hope that helps!
WOW, Ryan!! That was Spactaular!! The lights along the walkway were amazing, and the military band and lights in Patriot Park made you so proud to be am American. We are so thankful for our freedom and for all who serve in our military. I can't wait to walk through this and experience and enjoy it in person when we are down there in January. Ryan likebyou I am on Team white. I put all white lights on our house outside and wecuse all white lights on our Christmas tree. I like the all white . To me it expresses warm and iblove the country look of sll white lights. Thank you for bringing this to us. As always, another great informative and entertaining video. Remember last year they were going to add music/speakers and ran out of time or something? Looks like it didn't make it this year...maybe they opted for more lights instead?

It says on their website that it has music. This was opening night so maybe they’ll get it working one of these days. A lot of people were walking around playing music on their phone.

There are not, the fireworks were only for the opening night celebration at Patriot Park. We wanted to record and include it at the end for those who could not be there.
