    Thanks for the mention! You can also connect a single channel and place both leads on the injector control wires, instead of battery ground, and this will give you the math channel waveform you showed, live. Why, because it is the difference in potential, (A-B). Make sense? This injector waveform is very very similar to the old TBI injection Peak and Hold designs where you will have two voltage spikes. One at the end of the peak section and the second at the end of the hold. Thanks again!

    No problem for the mention! Thanks for giving me this new method for testing the injectors, and yes it makes perfect sense. I'll definitely be trying this soon, hopefully this weekend. Have a good one and thanks for dropping by!

    @@oneanddonediy The Pico math channels are awesome! And what you showed too. The other method I mentioned is how I would do it on my Snap-on scope as it does not do math channels. Or how one would do this test using a single channel scope.

    This is great to have a channel that starts at the beginning of the trade. I subscribe to Scanner Danner, South main auto, eric the car guy, Pine hollow diagnostics and many more but can't wait to see what's coming from you next! Keep up the good work and you know you're doing something right if you're on Danners radar.

    Fascinating...using a math channel to analyze them. Interesting video for sure, I think it's like anything else, the more known goods we analyze, the easier it is for us to see bad my friend 😉 Keep up the great work 👍 👏

    If you compare the port vs GDI, the main difference is how the ECU manages the the coil current. In GDI it is just the coil resistance and battery voltage what dictates the current. That means the coil has to have quite a lot of turns to not overheat, but that means it has limited forces and/or will be rather slow (high inductance with limited battery voltage) to respond. On GDI the injectors have to operate with greater forces and stricter timing, so the simple one side controlled electromagnet won't make it. You can see first high voltage pulse (to a voltage level that would be tightly regulated by the ECU), which allows very fast magnetic field ramp up, so very fast response on even a high inductance coil. Plus it allows a high current boost to get the injector needle actually moving. Then you can see the driver is pulsing battery voltage. That is the way, how it maintains the exact, lower (as at this moment it needs only to hold the needle in the open position, aka holding current), current in very efficient way even when the coil resistance is low (so allows for fast responding low inductance coil design) and even it is able to compensate for batter voltage variation. And then the negative side switch get released, allowing the holding current to disappear quickly for the needle to close. All this allows for way higher force injectors while keeping them small to maintain the timing accuracy, yet do not overheat them.

    Thank you so much for taking your time to explain that. It really helps a lot, especially to see this explanation and actually have the waveform live on the screen. I'm a trained scientist and, the more I learn about cars it just fascinates me the amount of science and engineering that has gone into making parts. I know cars give people trouble and they do need to be fixed from time to time. However, it's still amazes me the effort that was put into this.

    for us poor techs that can't afford that fancy pico scope wouldn't it be the same to plug the negative of the scope into the ground side of the injector circuit and the positive into the positive side of the circuit(or wold it be the other way around) and get the same out put? no all GDI injector wave forms look like this or was this unique to the GM style

  • @oneanddonediy

    @oneanddonediy

    You're probably right on getting the same output. I would have to check that out. As far as just being unique too GM. I'm not sure about that either, but what I can say is that some people may be only pro one side of the injector instead of both. I prove both to make a math channel to get the end result that you see in the video.
