    Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave such kind words Rob. I try to keep it simple while explaining the more complicated details. I have felt since the beginning of the guitar/ musical education content on the channel that using big words and leaving out 1/2 the details to try to seem cool or smart is just not my style. Kind of an A-hole move when channels do that. Its like are you here to help people or make yourself feel cool? LOL. Thanks again bro.

    Ahh, the oak guitar is in the corner by the amps. All it needs its final sanding/shaping, some type of finish and assembly. I really do need to get back on it and get it done. I just try to keep the content mixed and shuffled to bring new viewers and views to the channel but it should be done after about 2 more videos on it. Then I will do one of those all in one no talking gloss over videos of the whole project and put links and cards to a play list of all the build videos but, yes its still not done just yet. It just seems like something is always getting put in front of the final completion. Weather, vacation, duties at home, off channel car projects, another video etc. I'll try to move it a bit forward in the list. I would also like to get it done because I have some pretty cool ideas for future builds that I would like to try. I really don't want to have too many unfinished projects going at once. After I get the shop finished it should ramp up the speed of guitar project completion quite a bit. As well as giving me a nice looking more open place to record the non-build/demo segments. I had planned on working on that at this time of year but then lumber prices went insane so its looking like maybe fall? We will see? The oak guitar should definitely be completed before then though. Thank you for all the interest in the project, I will keep that in mind when planning future video sequence.

    Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such a kind comment Pizza Master. You are certainly welcome. I had made a video on phase switching as well as series/parallel about 2 years ago I think? But, I forgot to make any mention of magnetic phase in the video. So I was happy that I was asked to make this video as it is kind of a redemption of sorts. Thanks again for all the support, kind words and interest.

    Thanks Clem- I'm putting together a scrap caster, and wound my own P-90s with inspiration from you. I added coil taps at the 70% mark, so I could try weird stuff like making a pickup partially out of phase with itself. Lots of fun to try these things, but I get lots of buzz from all my experimental wiring. I guess I need to put a breadboard inside a shielded box on the guitar.

    Thank you so much for that awesome inspiring comment Allan. That is so great to hear. The off center coil tap as a phase point is a great idea. You seem to really understand what is causing the buzz as yes it is very to be a shielding issue from exposed wires during the tests. You can take an old rca cable and use it as the + of your wiring and only ground the outer wire one end and snip it short on the other leaving only the middle conductor sticking out on the end you want to work with and you can put heat shrink around it to be fancy LOL. Then you will have all your positive leads shielded. That may help, I find it to be just the right medicine for a hot amp input lead or on a noisy fuzz pedal or overdrive that wants to oscillate. If you do that it should quiet down quite a bit. Do remember though that when hooking something up out of phase you have now created another + that will need shielding as well. Thanks again Allen it is always so cool to hear that someone has used info from this channel in their own builds and experiments, that makes my day. That is why I do this.

    Thanks Glenn. I am glad you like the format. I try to make these videos in a way that a beginner can understand but not so basic as to cause a well versed person to switch it off immediately. This was almost a redemption of sorts as the previous video I had done on pickup wiring configurations had no mention of magnetic phase. I really appreciate all the kind words and interest you show in the channel. You have also given me some great advice as one looking in from the outside. I loved it when you said don't ruin the "charm" of the channel. So to make the new camera not look sterile and cold by being too sharp and clinical. I have recorded all the new footage using vintage 50s-60s film lenses with an adapter. Thank you Glenn, that was a good point and a good call.

    I used 3 three way switches on my last build. Now I'm going to do tgat again but with pots for all three pickups, a lever that can change volume for fade effect as a gimmick, a normal volume knob and a tone knob with 4 three way switches to variate with the amounts of capacitance

    Oh yeah and ofcourse a diy pickup because I only had a pair laying around so I need an extra one. I am inspired by a video of you building one. I think I can do it and if it works it will just be the best pickup ever made in comparison to just buying one.

    Awesome Iggy, the phase fading thing is something I have never tried before. Ah yeah a rotary cap selector is a pretty slick deal you could go from jazz dart to maybe even put in a tiny 1nf cap on the other end or something and kill the lows off. I use 1nf caps on my volume wipers as a treble bleed often. I hope you decided to make a pickup and I also hope it blew your sox off. Much luck and respect brother.

    Hey Clem! You ever think about doing a video on making an active pickup? I think that could be a lot of fun to watch! Same with making your own microphone! Also, I've been wanting to make my own hand built guitar over the summer (walnut body and swamp ash top would look really cool!) and I thought it'd be really cool to make p90buckers for it (side by side in series in the same housing), though I'm not sure how I'd make the plastic cover for something like that. But half the fun is figuring out stuff like that haha. Take care!

    Thank you for watching and taking the time to write such an awesome comment HTPioneer. I had thought about making the "strongest humbucker in the world" Active using a computer speaker amp as soon as someone said it wasn't actually the strongest. No one ever did though? LOL I have looked into making a ribbon mic but I never got around to it. I used to make my own large diaphragm mics using paper cone tweeters when I was a kid. I do have a few of those around here and that might be a pretty cool video. P90 buckers would have some serious output that would be a cool project. You might be able to get away with using a very weak magnet combo in them if you arent going for insane output and get a really smooth hi-fi kind of sound. I don't know much about how you could make a plastic cover for them? You could maybe have someone 3d print you one. You could also take flat sheets of plastic and cut and glue them. Another way might be to make a mold and put the bobbins in and pour resin. It would pot them and cover them all at once and the pickup would basically be indestructible. I always just make stuff out of wood though because I dont have any experience with those techniques and its cheap to do and I got the tools for it. I will put your suggestions in my notes though and if/when I make a DIY mic or active pickup video I will give you a shout-out. Thanks again I appreciate all the interest, suggestions and viewership truly.

    Hey Clem! I've ran into a forum discussion about pickups and their construction couple days ago. Basically someone claimed that you can build a pickup without magnet in it and if you wave a magnet above the coil as if it were a string it'd still react as a regular pickup. Does that mean that if you magnetize strings or attach magnets to them you'd get a reading?

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you as always Bash for watching and taking the time to comment. Yes that is correct if you had a magnetized bridge of some kind or if you glued little magnets to the strings you would not have to put a magnet in the pickup. I think this is somewhat similar to the way a metal detector finds steel. It sends out a wave from one coil and then the metal reacts to that and the other coil picks it up. I was talking with a guy on a FB group about this once and he said yeah I wish they made a metal detector with blue tooth or an input so that when you hit the metal it would play music instead of that annoying beep sound. LOL Thanks again bro.

    If you want to get real wild, if you take a magnet and hold it so it would repel the one in a pickup over the strings it completely kills the signal.

    I give up on this…. Pickups do not have “phase” they have polarity. I know Clem knows this, and is using “phase” as is commonly used, but phase is time. Polarity is the up and down of the waveform or electrical signal. Note that pickups have North up and south up polarity. Leo Fender said “out of phase” incorrectly 1000 years ago and people still say it.

  • @heavymetalATC

    @heavymetalATC

    Great point VCS, You know I never really thought about it much its just the commonly used term so I use it. You are exactly right its not really out of phase like 2 or 3 phase AC mains power. An "out of phase" set of pickups are creating the same or similar AC wave for all intents and purposes at the same time just in different polarities. The wave forms of both would look like out of phase ac power if overlaid on an oscilloscope but, its not a timing discrepancy like in the winds of a generator head its just opposite polarity, Great point, and actually one I hadn't considered though. I knew it was not the same but I hadn't put in the thought to compare the two and actually note the difference in the two situations with the same common nomenclature. I will continue to say out of phase and in phase though I may take the time to expand on this in the future when I do.

  • @velvetonecustomshop5026

    @velvetonecustomshop5026

    @@heavymetalATC the pickups that are considered “out of phase” are the same as one another. Reverse the polarity of one, and both the up and down of the wave are separately amplified. Phase in audio and electrical are different, but polarity is the same in both.
