Nice rig, Always do a pull test, make sure tail gate is down and wheels chocks are in place . Front landing gear off the ground about 2 inches , engage you trailer brake then pull forward a bit, you should not move. The reason for the tail gate down, front landing gear off the ground and wheel chocks are, if you do uncouple your 5th wheel it wont fall on your truck rails or the tail gate and it will not roll away. Good Travels.

From a 2.1million mile truck driver.....YES, ALWAYS do a pull test! Learn to trust your mirrors backing up. If you're unsure at all, G.O.A.L. Get Out And Look!
I would always do the tug test when I owned my fifth wheel as you can see professional, tractor-trailer drivers do the same thing and there’s a good reason for it. Congratulations on your new rig.
@michaelfinley9988

If you have a B&W Companion hitch, no tug test needed. You can visually see the jaws clamp around kingpin and arm move back into locking position as you back in and as long as you can install pin into hole with cotter pin in place, there is no way the hitch can disengage. I always still move very slowly forward before heading out. B&W Companion hitch is by far the best hitch in the business. Not sure what that hitch is but it sure isn’t very confidence inspiring. I would do a tug test with that hitch. I would not cheap out on a hitch.

I have a Companion and still do the tug test every time. I feel it’s a good practice. Agreed that the B&W Companion is an excellent hitch👍🏻

@@michaelfinley9988Doest matter you should always do a tug test but that’s the difference between a professional driver and someone who just pulls an RV 🤷🏽♂️
You should consider a 5th wheel tailgate. It will completely remove most of your anxiety about hooking up. Hooking up with the tailgate closed is a game changer.
@IreneIronTravels

That would be pretty cool for sure!
Great job. From a truck driver of 40 years yes do the tug test every time 😊. And just remember that your trailer doesn’t turn as fast as your bumper pull did. Just remember GOAL (Get Out And Look ) and in joy your new trailer. And yes that was a friendly toot from that driver to say you’re doing great 😊. Thanks From Wisconsin
Chris, you rocked backing up! I’m sure you all are going to love your new home on wheels! Safe travels!

Thank you!!
You can verify the jaws are closed on the king pin too. You should do the tug test every time it’s a good habit to get into. Takes 2 seconds and you know it’s good. You don’t want to find out when you pull into the highway it’s not connected right.
We have been RVing 16 years. Wife has been a very accomplished Marshall er since I showed her how aircraft marshaller’s clearly signal, no hand waving. But we recently purchased the EarTec headsets, just in time to back up 200 feet around a corner. It was done so calmly and quietly. But a big thumbs up for your first backup in that site. Also I used to carry a long pole saw to trim as we backed up into some of these Corp of Engineer parks.

Great idea.
Tug test is an essential step! Position the two front jacks one inch off the ground, manually apply the trailer brakes, and tug forward. So important, only takes a couple of minutes versus the alternative of catastrophic disengagement and crushing your truck bed and rig.

Get a life
I do the tug test out of habit. I drove a semi for 16 years and I would do the 3 step…. Hitching up listen for the click … tug test and visually inspect. It ticks me off that campgrounds don’t do a better job at keeping trees cut back. I carry pruning shears with me and cut if I can reach them. I doubt they’ll replace your roof if it gets damaged… so I do what best for my camper.
One trick I learned is the auto level remembers where you unhitched. You hold the left and right button on the auto level controller at the same time and it raises it to the level you unhitched. I’ve been towing with my Tremor a year since I traded in my RAM, I love it. You can actually check your lights inside the truck in the tow menu. I always do a tug test! I’ve rarely used my slider hitch but it’s nice to have in case. Congrats on the 5th wheel, I’m sure y’all will enjoy the extra space.
You’ll love that slider hitch and once you get the backup camera you’ll realize how much that is a game changer. Have fun and safe travels.
Congratulations, great job. has a transport driver for 35 years I would recommend always doing a tug test, better to be safe than sorry. Enjoy your fifth wheel. Luc from Ottawa,Canada
Congratulations on the new rig! My Dad has the same issue with the camera being on the tailgate while lining up his 5th wheel, so he superglued a small magnet on the end of a collapsible pointer stick (a small dowel would work too) - he sticks it just in front of where the pin goes into the hitch, so when the pin knocks the pointer stick off it is going right into the hitch at the right spot. It's tall enough that you can see it in your rearview mirror and line it up with the hitch. May your new Fifth wheel come with many incredible adventures!
So glad she is getting experience on hooking, pulling and backing. You never know when she will really have to do it. Congratulations guys on your new Fifth wheel. Safe travels.
Wow great job both of you. I can tell you guys are gonna have that down pat in no time! 👏
I can see my bed. I added a dashcam with the display mounted on the rearview mirror. It also has a rear camera included. I then installed the camera up top inside near the middle sliding door. This helps big time hooking up.
Congrats, Chris you did a great job towing and backing up!!

This was a great video. So real and a good video for those who are new to pulling a trailer that even the seasoned need to practice in a new rig.

We did the tug test! It's really quick with the hydraulic jacks and we've been doing it overtime. Cheap insurance for sure! 😊👍
Congratulations on your new fiver!! With as little clearance as you have with your tail gate down, you may want to look into a fifth wheel tail gate. You dont have to put the tailgate down to hook or unhook the fifth wheel. Safe travels and good health.

You guys rock! You understand the learning curve and YOU know you will get better. I have never used this style of fifth wheel but tons of miles on a different style. I always verified by site from the back that the pin was totally engaged. I also did the visual every time I stopped. There are some evil people in the world and I wanted to eliminate that risk. Also as you probably already know the first back in you did was called blind backing. Anytime you have a choice I would always back from the other direction. Again you are probably old pros at all this backing stuff but just wanted to throw it out there. So excited for this video and looking forward to the next one. New RV accessory is a pole chain saw.😎

My husband said great job on your driving and backing in. He has driven truck his whole life and if you have the opportunity backing in on your drivers side is always easier. When hooking and unhooking always try to be somewhat straight with your trailer because the pin box hit your truck bed. And always get out and look and discuss your plan. Safe travel, hope to see you on the road someday. You Got This!!!

Thank you for posting this video. We are about to embark on full time 5th wheeling. Looking at a mega cab Ram which gives a short bed. I came across the automatic slide hitches earlier today. Didn't know that's what you had until I watched your video. I am sold! I'm so happy we can get the short bed truck and still tow the trailer. Thanks so much for putting that in the video.

Great new trailer. How much of your truck payload is used by that huge trailer? Isn’t your truck payload at 3,500 lbs?
@IreneIronTravels
Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, our truck payload is around 3500 lbs. We still need to fully move in and get properly weighed but a 5th wheel pin weight is around 15-20%. So we should be good to tow around 15,000 lbs.
I dropped my 5th one time and now I always do a tug test. You guys are doing great.

Thank you so much 👍 BK & BS & BC
Congrats on the new rig!! Looks awesome!! And awesome driving!! It'll get much more natural with time. A word of advice: the break away wire should be connected to the base rails or something just below the head of the hitch, and invest into a solid headache rack to help protect the cab. After being involved in a major accident while pulling, our fifth wheel hitch head completely sheered off (granted we had an older style Reese 30k, as this happened in 2007). The wire was connected to our chain hooks for our gooseneck ball which allowed the trailer brakes to engage and roll the fifth wheel into the ditch, away from the truck. With the hitch sheered, the rig slammed into the cab of the truck. The headache rack on our hauler bed very much saved the unit from coming more forward. Granted, I never wish that experience on anyone, but being prepared for the worst is always the best course of action. Stay safe, and look forward to many more adventure videos!!

Beautiful coach! We've bought our 340RL in 2020 and have never regretted owning an Alliance RV. Our first year towing a fifth wheel we had a Pullrite slider. I sincerely hope you have better success with it than we had. I couldn't wait to get rid of it. Hitch up was so difficult. If I wasn't completely square and level to the rig, it wouldn't connect. Enjoy your coach. Great job parking!

When you do your tug test, and I recommend it , your single front jack should be a few inches off the ground so you don't damage it with the pull. We tow a 41.5 foot 5th wheel

Another Chapter! Congrats! Love you guys!! Be careful!
This might be some old info for you, and if so, sorry for the repeat. When backing up, I make sure I can always see my spotter in the mirrors. I tell them if I can’t see you, I’ll stop moving. Also, when backing into the campground, you did a great job of picking a “pivot point” for you trailer tires and start your turn a few feet prior to that point. Backing a 5th wheel, it’s able to pivot faster than a travel trailer. Also, we have the Avenue 32RLS and love it so far.
Always carry extendable Garden clippers. I always did it my 33ft RV! So glad I’m in an Interstate now! Enjoy your new home!

Yes! Thank you!
Wow! That is a beautiful trailer! I've been waiting for this video a couple weeks now since I thought you said you'd do it in a week after your last video. I bet you were excited for this moment. That's a pretty close tolerance on the tailgate; you might want to devise a way to keep the tailgate halfway down/up until you get used to hooking it up? As a truck driver, I can assure you bumping the kingpin a bit isn't ever going to be an issue. They're made to take some stress! The automatic fifth wheel is a killer item! On our trucks we have sliding fifth wheels, but they just slide forward and backward, and if you're too far forward you can wipe out mudflaps when turning too much. That's slick. Keep in mind one thing: not every jurisdiction prunes their trees adequately, and often you will run into overhanging trees that will bash the hell out of your front end on that trailer! Be very cognizant of your surroundings while driving!!! I've transported a LOT of heavy equipment over my 47 years as a commercial driver and even though I'm careful, I've taken out some windows on tractors I've hauled because of tree branches that were too low. The front of that trailer will be NO match for a big branch. And obviously you'll keep the AC units in mind since they stick up even more. Geez, guys, this was exciting. So cool to see you moving up and on to the next stage. Beautiful setup. Very happy for you!

Thanks Kai! appreciate the advice! The last couple weeks of buy, selling, moving and a big RV rally really wiped us out!! 😊
I painted a white line on the center of the pin box then put black electrical tape markers on my truck's rear windshield and rear view mirror. when you line up the tapes looking into the rear view mirror with the white line on the pin box you are exactly centered. works great.
I would put the slider hitch in the back position while you were hooking up. Then slide it forward when all is well. It would eliminate the anxiety you feel about being too close to the RV with the tailgate.
Great job ! Love that combo. Did I get anxiety when your friends showed up to 'help'? Yes, yes I did. Continued safe travels !

I had tried hitching my breakaway cable to the side of the truck, but then making a 90 degree backin it pulled the pin and locked up my brakes. I now hitch mine like yours. Also, as close as your tailgate is, what some people do is when getting close to to the final click, just close your tailgate.

I think you might benefit by trading your current truck for a long bed dually. I have towed with both and the dually is just a better tow rig and much more stable.
I know that you guys have now been pulling a while, but here is a quick suggestion. I put a wrap of reflective tape (white will do) on the release handle of my Pullrite hitch. When the hitch is locked closed, the tape is right against the body of the hitch. I can, at a glance, check visually that the hitch is locked. Continued safe travels from a member of the famally.
Great job with the new RV!!!

You weren’t lying about the tailgate being close 😳😳
You guys did great, but what I do when I get the pin box fully in the truck bed, lined up and plugged into the truck . I put the tailgate up so that if you come in at a little angle, which can hit the trailer and damage the very expensive tailgate, there is no chance to damage the trailer or tailgate. Just what I do to clear my head of any possible conflict. Love both of your energy in this lifestyle and 5th wheel trailers rock in my opinion, for overall comfort in towing and living. Keep on keep'n on! PS, I always do a tug test, even though I know it's connected. It's more for my mental health, which is so important.

Was gonna add, I tow a large enclosed trailer every day and it's like getting up and walking anymore but one thing that was frustrating for me when we got our 5th wheel was I was either too far to the left or right so now Ive found if your basically right in the middle of the road your in the best spot when reversing.
