    I left school in 1966 and used to travel from Cockfosters to Bond Street every day to get to the West End office where I worked. What got me as I watched this is that nothing seemed to have changed very much from how it looked over fifty years ago.

    Interesting to see at Finsbury Park where the running tunnel was swapped during the construction of the Victoria line to cater for cross platform interchange. The westbound platform is the old Northern City branch platform to Moorgate.

    I too rode the line frequently during the early 1980's between Caledonian Road (student digs) and Hounslow West(girlfriend)/Heathrow, and I concur about the journey being long-winded & uncomfortable - however, before the line was extended to Heathrow (in the 1970's?) Hounslow West was a terminus and you used to have to change to a bus for the final few miles, so the journey took even longer!

    The sub-surface station platforms at Hounslow West only came into being when the new Heathrow Airport extension of the Picc was constructed in 1975 as the original terminus platforms at Hounslow West were located to the left before you arrive Hounslow West, these old platforms which have since been made into a large commuter car park. District Line services also ran between South Ealing and Hounslow West up until October 1964, hence the four-track layout between South Ealing and Northfields whereupon between Northfields and Hounslow West the District Line services alternated with the Piccadilly Line services. Also just before you arrive at Hounslow East there is the short remains of the former track bed which carried the line to the original Hounslow Town station; this now being the site of Hounslow bus garage.

    At 44:26 to 44:33 those thud sounds at that Platform In Barons Court remember that well. That was like that for years. And also on the Piccadilly Eastbound Side between Stamford Ravenscourt Park just after the bridge and more or less parallel to the park and Padling pool just before the station over the Arches there there was also a few loud thuds in that area around there and would be really bouncy. And down in the park you could feel it all rumble on the ground the vibration from the arches. I always remember it going slowly aswell one time slowing right down and going over it about 15 20 MPH and.the distance between those gaps it would still rumble and make a good thud noise

    I was age 24 newly arrived in London in November 1966. I worked as a Guard on the London Underground Piccadilly Line Hounslow West to Cockfosters. I was based at Northfields (Ealing). I worked from 1966 to 1968. Resigned then joined the Signals Workshop LG and later left Ldn on the M.V.Ocean Trust as the Ships Electrician. (Now I live in Perth Western Australia since 1970.) I became an Electrical Inspector and in 1994 Dec I retired early. Now I am age 78 on a lovely Australian Pension 100% Australian Govt Pension, in my 26th year of early retirement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I noticed the soot and dust and muck inside the tunnels built-up over the years of the Industrial Revolution in London UK. Each day when I returned home, my nose was full of this soot and muck.

    I used to live in Turnpike Lane from 1979-2004. When I started working in central London during the late 80’s, I used to take the train to Holborn. Over the years I did research and I have an interesting fact according to me: Did you know Turnpike Lane is the ONLY station on the WHOLE underground 🚇 system that has THREE exits in THREE DIFFERENT POSTCODES. The official address and exit is Langham Rd, N15. That is South Tottenham. There is an exit at Costa Coffee which is in N22, Wood Green and finally the third exit is outside Ducketts Common park which is N8, Hornsey. I have no real proof but I think I’m right. What are the rules on sounding the whistle? It went off coming out of the Southgate tunnel but not before Barons Court? And why is it required on that curve after Hounslow Central? I figure that when returning to daylight, it's needed because of the operator's vision being limited while adjusting to the glare.

    Just guessing as well. I would assume it is a LT 'traditional' shorthand term for set of extra learned skills and reactions beyond normal driving techniques, for situations that are unusual or irregular. So the Underground does not have a lot of steep gradients or trees dropping leaves on the lines, and an Underground driver might be on a line without either; but, as a professional, they should know what to do to safely drive over them, or any other potential difficulty.

    Kevin Edwards thanks - so when the narrator says ‘treat this as an automatic signal’, is there some difference to the train operator on how it is interpreted and actioned?

  • @rheostar

    @rheostar

    @@UncleGrunt I assume this was when the video was in the Holborn or Green Park areas as I've not watched it past Arnos Grove. It probably referred to the 'X' signal at Holborn that have (or had) an illuminated 'A' to signify to drivers to treat the signal as an automatic one.

    How does the center communtator not ground out when crossing over other rails at junctions?

  • @russouk

    @russouk

    4 жыл бұрын

    theres track side connectors so it cuts out when no rail as the brushes drop and trips a switch...and comes back on when gets to the main track again...and as theres a few units always one is taking power.

    The centre 4th rail is higher than the running rails, so the collector shoes don't make contact with the running rail over junctions. There's also knock blocks to protect the running rails, should the collector shoe be too low.

    London Underground tracks have 2 power rails, and the middle rail is one of them. The other one is the raised rail on the outside, usually furthest from the platforms.

    Lol, the thumbnail doesn't portend great things for a ride on a 21st century metro system! Things have certainly changed by the time it reaches Heathrow, though the story in between is hardly one of inexorable progress. It's often one of the most uncomfortable and unreliable lines on the network, which is faintly reassuring, given that it serves some of the most prosperous addresses in London. Too prosperous to use the tube, perhaps!
