PICC Line Assessment (Nursing Skills)

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC LINES) are commonly used in the clinical setting and nurses are responsible for assessment, care, and accessing these lines for medication and fluid administration and also to collect blood samples.
This video is about how to assess A PICC Line to ensure it has not migrated, there is no concern with leaking (interstitial) and the patient is comfortable. Safety checks are an important first step in ensuring the PICC placement and function.

I had a PICC line but, from the (perhaps inexperienced) flexation of the line by Nursing staff, it broke away at the external length. This then had to be recovered and a Hickman Line inserted which, by virtue of its complication, was the most distressing procedure I had to endure. PICC was not a “one stop shop” solution in my case. A decision to go Hickman directly would’ve been a better choice for patient comfort and stability.

Just wanting to give a WARNING on PICC lines, they should never be inserted into a person with total leg paralysis that only has their upper body for transfers. The transfer from wheelchair to bed is enough to severely damage the brachial plexus nerves, and cause permanent paralysis to the patients arm.

This line looks like a midline. I paused the video many times to try and find the difference between this picc line and how a normal midline looks like, because in this video they look the same. Can you tell me please how would i differentiate between a picc line that looks like just like a midline, by just looking. Like how would I know if it’s a picc line or a midline by just looking. Please I need help.

I have not heard of midline, but I did find this article www.nursingcenter.com/journalarticle?Article_ID=4388386&Journal_ID=2695880&Issue_ID=4388241

PICCs and Midlines are essentially identical devices, the difference is where the catheter tip is located. A PICC sits in the SVC/RA, a midline is essentially a peripheral cannula that is harder to dislodge and has an extended dwell time and is only suitable for medications that can be given peripherally. The insertion documentation will tell you which you are dealing with.

@@joestevenson5568 If the patient has no idea, and you have no documentation on the line, the only way to know for sure is by doing a chest X-ray!

If you are asking “do we push the blood back into the patient after a patency check” - yes. Ideally the patency check is seen in the line before blood enters the syringe
