Picard Season 3: LeVar Burton & Jonathan Frakes Discuss Final Season

With Star Trek: Picard Season 3 starting to stream on February 16th on Paramount+, I spoke with LeVar Burton (Geordi La Forge) and Jonathan Frakes (Commander William Riker) about the new season. During their interview, Burton and Frakes talked about being part of a show that still resonates with so many people 30 years after it first premiered, which episode of the ten-episode third season they’re most excited for fans to see, and why you don’t have to have seen Picard Season 1 and 2 to watch Season 3.
While I know many people were disappointed with the first two seasons of Picard, myself included, I’m pleased to report Picard Season 3 is fantastic and a love letter to Star Trek. I’ve seen the first six episodes and each one raises the stakes and builds the mystery. I can’t wait to see how it’s going to end. For more on the Season 3, you can read Maggie’s glowing review.
Picard Season 3 sees the return of Patrick Stewart in the titular role along with Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Michael Dorn as Worf, LeVar Burton as Geordi La Forge, and Brent Spiner as Lore.
Also returning from the first two seasons of Picard is Jeri Ryan, who originated her role as Seven of Nine on Star Trek: Voyager, and Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker. Other incredibly talented newcomers for Season 3 include Amanda Plummer as Vadic, an enemy of Picard's set on destroying the Federation, as well as Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut and Mica Burton as Geordi's daughters Sidney and Alandra La Forge. Outlander's Ed Speleers and 12 Monkeys star Todd Stashwick are set to appear in Season 3-with Speleers joining as a series regular as an associate of Beverly Crusher, while Stashwick plays the new captain of the USS Titan.
Check out what Burton and Frakes had to say in the player above.

As many Star Trek fans and followers well know, the late, great Leonard Nimoy was done with playing Spock after 'The Motion Picture' came out in 1979. When preparing for 'The Wrath of Khan', Harve Bennett "The man who saved Star Trek" and the film's executive producer had a meeting with Leonard Nimoy. He said to Leonard: "Look, I know you don't wanna do this. But, we need you, and if you did this, how would you like a great death scene?" And Leonard's ears went upward as Harve explained. Long story short, during the filming of Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, Leonard Nimoy found himself having fun again playing Spock because it reminded him back when they were writing and making great Star Trek episodes. So Leonard Nimoy had a change of heart and wanted to explore the possibilities of playing Spock again in some form after STII:TWOK. So no matter how old these greats are, if you write and produce great characters in these films, they will want to come back. Especially if they get the love from the fans and at times the critics.

One interesting nugget from this interview and the interview with Jeri Ryan and Todd Stashwick who also did an interview. Both when asked which is the best episode they both said Episode 304 (4). Then covered up saying they are all good. I guess the honest truth is episode 4 by a few in the cast is the best of the bunch.

Wow i wish i was so lucky to get to speak to the people that brought me up as my mother as physically she was there might as well have absent so i sought solitude in Star Trek The Next Generation when i was 14 but seeing a meteor pass the earths atmosphere with my naked when i was 5 which fascinated me i just thought again 14 when i first saw TNG oh my god this could be possible we can go to the stars and thus Picard Riker, Troi and Beverly became my mother through my teens and Geordi was my uncle and Worf was the tough love father :) so if you speak to them again please say thank you for the characters they magnificently portrayed that helped me through really rough times and Picard season 3 i was ready to bow out after seeing the first 2 seasons but giving this first episode a chance i am so glad i did as the tone, the music the directing, the camera movement the cinematography and as a film colourist myself it just all has come together in this 3rd season. thank you so much Matalas i love you for this.

The big rumour was that season two of Picard had it's budget slashed to allow season 3 to have a much bigger per episode budget, which would explain why season two was cheap looking at times.
