PIANISTS! Auto Page Turning Step by Step! YOU CAN DO THIS! Pianist Duane Hulbert shows you how!

Pianists! You NEED to know this. Using an auto page turner is a game changer. Say good-bye to having to find someone to turn pages for you in a performance (and hoping they'll turn the pages in time). Forget having to play with one hand to keep the musical line going while you fumble to turn the pages yourself.
In this video, Dr. Duane Hulbert will show you step by step how to use an auto page turning system. He'll tell you what you need to buy and tips on how to use it. For a non-techie, it's a bit complicated but as Dr. Hulbert can attest, it CAN BE DONE. Then there's no looking back.
What do you need to buy?
1. (1:16) Buy an iPad. It doesn't have to be the latest model. It can be renewed. It can be any size.
Dr. Hulbert started out with a 10.2 inch iPad which you can buy new for $269.95.
Apple iPad (9th Generation): with A13 Bionic chip, 10.2-inch Retina Display, 64GB, Wi-Fi, 12MP front/8MP Back Camera, Touch ID, All-Day Battery Life
He later upgraded to an Apple iPad Pro 2 12.9in (2017) 64GB, Wi-Fi - Gold (Renewed) Currently it's $449.99.

2. (1:46) You'll need to buy some sort of a pedal system. Dr. Hulbert uses PageFlip Firefly Premium Bluetooth/USB Page Turner Pedal, currently retailing for $109.95. www.amazon.com/PageFlip-Firef...
PageFlip puts out a KZread video that demonstrates its product clearly: • PageFlip Firefly Bluet...
3. (2:30) Buy a software program that will allow you to upload and store digital music on your iPad. Dr. Hulbert uses forScore. forscore.co/ It retails for $19.99.
You can purchase it on the Apple App Store. apps.apple.com/us/app/forscor...
4. (2:54) Optional item to buy: An Apple pencil. This allows you to make notations on your uploaded digital sheet music. Dr. Hulbert bought this Apple Pencil (1st Generation): Pixel-Perfect Precision and Industry-Leading Low Latency, Perfect for Note-Taking, Drawing, and Signing documents. It retails now for $89.00. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
5. (3:30) Pair the pedal and pencil with the iPad.
6. (4:27) Upload the music. To find over 710,000 FREE scores, check out IMSLP (International Music Score Library Project) / Petrucci Music Library. imslp.org/ forScore also can scan physical sheet music. For a really excellent video on how to import music into forScore, check out Emma Blair's KZread video: • How to Use forScore on...
7. (7:50) Some tips for using the pedal.
(8:50) Plan to turn the page a measure before the page's end.
(10:00) Be sure to practice with the page turning pedal. It adds another significant element to your playing; your left foot has to be trained!
(10:35) On slippery wood floors, consider using double-sided tape to secure the pedal to the floor.
(11:00) Keep your iPad charged at all times!
There are lots of good KZread videos that give more information about using an automatic page turning system. Many of the creators are much more tech savvy than Dr. Hulbert. But, as he said in this video, if he can learn how to use this system, so can you. Good luck!
Dr. Hulbert received his BA and MM from The Juilliard School of Music and his DMA from The Manhattan School of Music. Hulbert received the Gold Medal at the 1980 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition, and also won prizes in the 1981 Leeds Competition and 1985 Carnegie Hall International American Music Competition. He has performed as a soloist with symphonies across the United States and has given recitals at Merkin Hall in New York, Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. In 2002, his recording of the piano works of late-romantic Russian composer Alexander Glazunov was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Solo Instrumental Recording. David Hurwitz of ClassicsToday.com called the CD “a production that makes the best possible case for this really excellent but sadly neglected repertoire.” Dr. Hulbert taught at the university level for over thirty years.

Thank you for this information. I've been watching your videos for a while now and really enjoying. You have no pretencious introductions etc, just cut to the core and let us hear the beauty of the music. Simple and elegant. Thank you!

I am getting familiar with ForScore and just purchased a foot pedal. Thank you for reminding me of IMSLP. I am also scanning the music from my books. I'm struggling with using my left foot to turn the page. My right hand automatically wants to turn the page/hit the screen to advance! Practice? Thank you for the detail on your iPad. So far I'm ok with the 10" .

Be careful if you’re playing outdoors and in the sun. The iPad can overheat and automatically shut down! Recently happened to me. If your iPad is in a protective case, removing it will help the heat dissipate. Of course try to shield from direct sunlight. Great video. ForScore is terrific. Has many useful features and options. Well worth it.

I am only a listener of popular classical music and I do like to follow the score along. For the few pieces of PDF files I have on iPad, I just add the repeat (and coda) sections into the score, thereby eliminate the need of flipping pages for the entire piece.

Thank you for this. Unfortunately this is only good if you can get the music score on audio (i.e. to load on your Ipad) without breaking the copyrights laws further not all of the scores are recorded (mostly due to the copyright laws).... Useful but not the outmost.. This would be not having a foot pedal (what you demonstrate) and have the music page change automatically based on what the computer hears..could be done with the current technologies but I do not know if it exists. A good step though.
