Piaggio MP3 Front Wheel Bearing Replacement

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Follow my ongoing MP3 adventures as I fumble my way through replacing the front wheel bearings...
Certainly not my best work with a raging head cold and a substitute camera.

Thanks so much for posting this, perfect before I tackle the same looking setup on my ET4 (maybe different bearings).

Does anyone know the replacement part (ie SKF, INA...) for the two needle bearings (OEM number 167016) and lip seals (OEM number 167018) that are needed in the center of the steering control tie rod?

At what mileage did you have to replace the bearings? I am planning to do the wiggle test before taking the wheels off and servicing the entire front end, and replacing all the fluids. Thanks!

I did the front wheel bearings at 10k miles. They weren't crunchy or anything. Just that slight wiggle. To be fair, I flog the scoot hard regularly, at high speed across rough gravel roads and highways. So definately in the severe service category. I think I'm closer to 14k now and still chasing that high speed shimmy. I believe it's just a consequence of the hub design. Was never meant to be subjected to this kind of loading. Fluids change as you think necessary. Do keep track of the main strut bearings. Keep them greased. There isn't much of a seal top and bottom so water ingress and contamination is an issue. Also check for any wiggle in the strut. I have had the castle nuts back off and the strut be loose.

How many miles was on the scooter? I recently purchased a 2009 MP3 500 that seems neglected with 10K miles that'll need a lot of TLC.

5000? 6000? The roads around here a rough and I ride it hard so I don't fault the bearings for wearing early. I have to change the bearings on the bigger motorcycle often also.

@@pmatulew1 I'll probably have to dismantle the entire scooter in order to assess all the bearings that will need to be replaced. Have done the bolt grease gun mod on the front quadrilateral suspension bearings?

@@KevinNguyen-zn4vv You don't have to go too crazy to inspect it. Front and rear wheel bearings can be judged just by wiggling and twirling the wheels. You'll be able to tell easily if there is a problem or not. Do keep track of the tilt bearings. Pumping them with grease is good. Also check that there is no binding or play in the struts. And that there is no notchiness in the left right steering motion.

I think the term tension wrench isnt in the piaggio's factory dictionary same way the balllbearings from the steering collum breaking down . That locknut was way too tight

The axle nut is spec'd to be fairly tight. Because of how the hub is arranged the axle nut doesn't apply an adjustable tension. It just locks the outer bearing tight to the axle shaft. The inner needle bearing is free to slide lengthwise. You are free to draw your own conclusions about the robustness of the design.

Good for you! You'll have fun with it once you get the minor issues sorted out. The rear brake calipers can get corroded and stuck. Also the parking brake cable can get stuck. It's not very expensive but is not much fun to replace. The seat and trunk opening servo motors are a weak design. They are not water sealed. One is mounted on the left hip with a short cable. The other is mounted under the floorboards by your left toe. This is a bad place that gets water and dirt. The servo motors can also be replaced. I covered my new ones with silicone to help keep the water out.
