Phylum Tardigrada: Water Bears and Moss Piglets
We finally arrive at the famous tardigrades! Members of phylum Tardigrada include the water bears that have been made famous in popular culture due to their extreme resilience. Despite how they are depicted in cartoons, they are Ecdysozoans, and thus closely related to arthropods like insects, so let's get a closer look at their morphology and characteristics.

Problem with the Tardigrades, is that despite being resistent to many things, most of it is not the usual cause of death for tardigrades, that is of course their predators, and tardigrades do not have good defense mechanisms against them which is pretty ironic.

I love watching Tardigrades stumbling/swimming around and eating, they’re so cute.
I love Tardigrades
For real the tardigrade is one of the most incredible living thing on this planet. Great serie sir!
Amazing how such a small organism still has some of the complex features associated with large animals.
You are really awesome , Professor Dave. Got so much knowledge from your videos.

I've been most anticipated for the Arthropods, since they make up 80% of all animal species, which makes them the most successful animal phylum.

Thanks professor Dave! I love you’re videos. You make me want to pursue knowledge on all of the fields of science.
It's so interesting how people have fallen in love with this microscopic creature. It really is kind of adorable in an odd way. (Also, I really like your music, and hope to hear more from you on that front in the not-too-distant future. I also happen to love your retro-futuristic/synthwave aesthetic.)

I love Water Bears! WOOHOO! Thank you Professor Dave!
This looks like Roland from the recent Garfield movie! Studying evolution right now - so on a serious note this is also very cool!
I’ve never heard the term “moss piglets” but I love it! Is that term commonly used? Are some species called water bears and others called moss piglets, or is the whole group called water bears by some, and called moss piglets by others?

I got myself a microscope to look for tardigrades. Haven't found one yet , lots of other micro organisms, but there are lots of drops of water to look at.
This seemingly humble creature actually deserves the title of king of the animals!
Thanks
Tardigrades!!!!!!! They're so awesome!
hey professor dave! i recently read the novel Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, and was wondering if the Astrophage mentioned in it is scientifically plausible. I gathered that it's probably not very possible, but Im just curious how much of it is accurate. I know this is right up your alley, and so when you can, i will appreciate you talking about these little organisms!
I originally thought water bears were arachnids because of their 8 legs but I didn’t realize they belong to their own classification!
Interesting fact; if you add Lye and a plugged in hair iron to the water they will rapidly evolve.
Professor Dave can you please make a video explaining Aurora Borealis? 🙏 Nobody ever explains things as well as you, you are my science king, pls help me understand it 🥺👉👈

The inspiration for the Trisolarans. By the way, are they iteroparous?
Thanks Dave. I wonder whether they do share a lot of their genome with Arthropods, or are placed parallel to them as a result of convergent evolution. It would be remarkable, if tardigrades are found elsewhere in the solar system.
Maybe I missed it, but there was no mention of Paul.
They are .5 millimeter long?
Oh yes a face only a mother could love 😊
*Tardigrades vs Couches* T C Has multiple legs: ✅ ✅ Looks leathery: ✅ ✅ Longer on one side: ✅ ✅ Can be sat on: ✅ ✅ Costs money: ❌ ✅ Is alive: ✅ ❌ Comes in a box: ❌ ✅ Needs cleaning: ❌ ✅ *Conclusion* Tardigrades are better than couches.
Why don’t armored tardigrades ever get any love?

Hello Professor Dave, I love your show! Water Bears are so weird looking! I think it's really cool to make all of these amazing creatures with crisper, but I think that it might be dangerous if one of them excapped from its confines. Has one ever retired a human by mistake? How do you know what is a safe and acidproof. fence? I saw this movie where this alien had acid for blood so that when it got shot up by all of America's best guns the acid would fly out and land on the space marines. I once asked the big hollywood star whose name I will not repeat and she didn't answer my question no matter how polite I was and I even lied about how great of an actress she was. Some people are just too important for an American tax paying citizen. Thanks Dave, bye now
