Phuket Old Town - Sunday Walking Street Market (Lard Yai) - Food, Shopping & More

Sunday Walking Street Market (Lard Yai) in Old Phuket Town
At the end of 2013, the Phuket old town community launched the Sunday Walking Street market along Thalang Road. Sunday was a quiet day in the old town part of Phuket. Many businesses closed on Sundays and there wasn’t much going on except tourists walking around taking pictures. The initiative was launched to bring in more economic opportunities for the locals and it has been a huge success. The added revenue has enabled the old town to undergo a renaissance with a lot of work going into preserving the old buildings. They have buried the over head wires, museums have opened and many small restaurants and cafes as well.
The market starts late afternoon around 4pm and continues until about 10pm every Sunday. There are countless vendors selling food, clothing, souvenirs as well as numerous street performers showing off their talents. It’s a great place to see and a nice break from the beaches. A good time to visit is around 6pm so you can see the sun setting over the buildings and the lights turning one the many colored buildings. It does get crowded around 7pm and onwards but it still is worth visiting.

The old town is fun to visit. Last year when I came it was during a time of heavy rain and it flooded. If you want to see what happens when the tide is in with heavy rain here is the video. Phuket Old Town Flooded - October 16, 2022 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIOjt9Sgma27aag.html

Wow that is really interesting. From what I was told the area used to be mostly abandoned. With the increased amount and importance of tourism they invested money into the area. They used to mine tin on the island and they traded it in this area.

The Russians fled the war and moved to Phuket as you can see over thousand Russians are everywhere in Phuket.

There have been lots of Russians in this area for well over a decade. Cheap flights and nice weather. I would rather be on the beach than shoveling snow.
