Photos show impressive size of grizzly bears

Large grizzly bears are out and about in Montana.
Jamie Goguen posted photos nine days ago, saying that their old generator storage shed on Montana's eastern front has become this grizzly's personal scratch tree.
Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is using the photo to help teach people how to tell the difference between black and grizzly bears. Biologists point out grizzlies are generally larger and may be bigger than a small shed like this.

Not necessarily. I lived in Montana and we had a Griz wander into our school because it was a warm and he had just ate from the trash so he was full and sleepy. That was a lucky case but people can be right next to a whole group of grizzly’s if they’re by a river eating salmon. Well fed bears don’t really bother with people tbh

Montana Grizzly Bear Notice: In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field. We advise that outdoors-men/women wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoors-men/ women to carry pepper spray with them in the case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. outdoors-men/women should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear dung. Black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear dung has little bells in it and smells like pepper. Enjoy Your Stay In Montana !

When hiking it is advised to wear bells so they can hear you coming, and to carry pepper spray just in case. You can tell the difference in their pawprint and their scat too. I like the perspective here. I had never seen a Moose in my life, and I assumed they were big but I had no frame of reference. I went to a Bass Pro Shop one day a while back, and was chatting with a friend not realizing the taxidermy Moose was directly behind me. I turned to look over the balcony and about had a heart attack. They're giant. Bigger than horses by far. When you get to see a Grizzly next to a shed like that it really puts their size into perspective. Cool stuff.

As a kid I went to a school in Northern(ish) Ontario and part of the program was a week in Algonquin park canoeing/camping. The last day we were on our way out, tired, dirty, wet and hungry not making much noise, we just wanted to get dry and eat. We were headed down a small slow moving river to the last lake, we cut the inside corner of a bend in the river, and almost hit a Moose having a snack. I could have hit it with my paddle. A big male, fully racked out, it was massive. We were well inside the danger zone (mid September, so the rut is starting), and being in a canoe it towered over us up to its belly in the water. Then it started to exit the river, and it just got taller, and taller. Thankfully it decided to not smash us into a bloody pile of meat, but JFC, it was so much bigger than I thought it would be. We had seen a couple of cows and young ones during the trip, but this thing was a MONSTER. Seeing some mounted ones later in life, it had to be at least 1400 lbs. Heck of a day in grade 10 at your new school.

I was in northern Minnesota one time out in the sticks and it was about midnight. I walked out to my car and popped the truck to get my luggage out. The dim light of the trunk came on and I noticed something moving next to me on my left hand side mere feet from me. I turned my head and I was basically eye to eye to a moose butt. I'm 6'2" and the top of the butt was over my head! It obviously heard me gasp and then it bolted down the driveway and into the bush...crashing through the trees making all kinds of racket. I'll NEVER forget that.

There are several things a person can do to stay safe in Bear Country. Some advise pepper spray, while other say to sew little bells into your clothes so you make noise while you're hiking. It also helps to know what different bear scat (poop) looks like. Black bear droppings are usually filled with left over twigs and a few berries. While grizzly bear droppings.. smells like pepper and is full of little bells. Thanks for the opportunity to use one of my Fave Canadian jokes :D

For everyone saying that there is not scale to estimate the size of the bear, that fence is likely around 4.5 feet tall. That is about standard for a fence you can tie off your horse too. That bear is likely easily 8.5-9 feet tall at a conservative guess. It is squatting with it’s butt on the ground and is still roughly 2 feet taller than the fence. Add at least 2 feet for the length of its legs if it was standing and then math does itself.

These animals are a moving mountain of muscle! They can run faster than humans. They weigh 800 to 1,000± pounds. They are majestic & should be given a lot of room. You piss one off or bother it too much and your going to see a large mouth full of large fangs coming your way. Do not ever take these beast lightly.

When your running and screaming like a little girl , to get away from the bear , the last thing you care about is whether its a black bear or a Grizzly bear. Grizzly bears are fast for their size and black bears are incredibly fast, who ever thought of the stand your ground and look bigger than you are, was the guy who told his friend to do so while he was running away to save his own behind..... You don't have to out run the bear , you only have to outrun your buddy or spouse........

@@robyndismon394 have you been up close to a bear??? Did a fly in , in Quebec once where the bears come right up to your front door and look into your windows.....scary as hell to say the least. You learn to watch the signs of aggressive behavior, if you believe you have the balls to stay there and look bigger than the bear, do so, if not walk away backwards while watching to see if it follows. Then you will understand what screaming like a little girl means, if it follows you for dinner, and your buddies hear you screaming they might come rescue you or wait until later to come back and see what is left of you......( check your pockets for the car keys and share wallet since you won't be needing them anymore) Fight or flight ...lol
