Such an important point about replicating others' photos with the most instagram likes. Your food analogy is spot on. Some people aren't aware that the photo itself is only part of the story when it comes to Instagram 'success'. Hashtag research, interaction within the app, posting times, and other factors all contribute to the 'success' of a post. The scroll mentality seems to be high at the moment, with minimal interaction, if any - probably a reflection of the current lockdown, it being January, etc. Thank you for getting me thinking about creating my first photography project as an amateur. I think my target will be to create a book (for personal reflection).

Marc, thank you for all of your technical videos. I've watched and learned from many. That said, this is an incredibly inspirational video, and I'm glad to see this aspect of your work. I'm inspired to return to a personal project I had planned before the pandemic. I've already reached out to my subjects. Thank you.

Such good advice and a reminder to focus on why we take photos to begin with. It is so true about the likes, a photo that I post which I love will barely be noticed whilst the generic landscapes and wildlife photos create a much larger reaction. I try to balance the two. Taking photos that I love and know people will enjoy and also taking photos that I know the majority of people will not necessarily like or understand, but I do. I will definitely be starting a personal photographic project!

Good stuff about the personal project! Thanks for outlining one style of photography above other. I always thought that getting up in 3am , cutting thru the dark woods and surrounded by hyenas just to bring that one image of sunrise is much easier than walking thru the streets smoking and sipping coffee while taking the images of less fortunate around . .. I do both from time to time ...Don't think one type of photography is easier than the other.. in Fact I think that what others do is more difficult than what I'm doing. As for personal recognition and success is all about marketing and always been this way.. Like in the 80s and 90s when you had to be connected to get yourself featured in a gallery and so forth.. If not being appreciated by others how else would we be self satisfied and happy about our work.....

Great video Marc and congratulations again on your previous exhibitions. I think your observations about "chocolate box" images and the nature of online consumption are quite right. I sometimes think that calls for a more art-oriented approach to the use of photography are a bit intimidating for most. I suspect that if people were encouraged to explore photojournalism as a way of seeing and storytelling that many would discover their capacity for artistic expression. After all, art is just a class of communication that can take many forms, and communication is something we all can do.

Great video As you ve seen I started a mini art project using OO guage railway figures some pics I put up on the tsop Facebook page. I produce images from ideas I get either from something I see or from a play on words. I do get pleasure from other peoples feedback but it is for my own satisfaction thinking of and then interpreting an idea into a piece of visual art ( in my eyes anyway🙂🙂 ) .

As im sitting here watching thos video, as am reminded of my personal project that i am doing. I am currently doing a history story of one of the mill villages that is here where i live. Shortly after i started I realized that there is a historical group that is hiding a lot the history of this town and in order to get what I need. I am going to have to pay to get it. It is so sad. I can't finish my project because of it. So i am glad that i am able to get what i can.

Don't forget to put a copyright symbol on your pics ( on a CD/DVD/ disk on a key " samples" ) to potential publishers/ publicity folk .Also from my personal experience , ask if there are file size limits /dimensions that are required for exhibiting your work , so that any resizing can be done before it's ( potentially ) too late for final admissions

This is why I quit posting to all social media. It’s completely fake, and nobody spends more than a couple seconds looking at your photos. I’m now focusing entirely on printing my stuff in zines and small affordable books.

I have a question that might even make a good video. I want to start printing my images (Landscapes/Nature Type photos) and sell them. How much should I charge? What material should I get? Does the material affect the price/value of an image? Should I print them online (with more options to choose from) vs local (safe delivery)

Hi Nikos, they are personal decisions that each photographer makes to suit their work. I'm afraid there isn't a one size fits all but we do work with a photographer that does similar things, check it out here www.theschoolofphotography.com/courses/fine-art-landscape-photography
