Brent, the video looks great. I have basically three sets of gear. One ultralight Canon M series kit, One lightweight Canon 'Budget' RF kit and then my third L series RF kit with my big lenses and expensive glass. Depending on how light I want to be determines the kit I take along. Being 65, my days of big mountain treking is starting to get less and less, but I'm still up to a good 8-10 mile day of hunting birds and landscapes on flatter terrain, some days with a 600 mm over my shoulder on a monopod. There is something to be said for going light. Some days the knees just don't feel up to it. Keep up the great work. The gear is only half the job, what you can do with it makes all the difference.

Yeah, I was freaking out about that! Those guys are WAY more skittish than the Gambel's and Scaled, and usually you don't see them until you flush them, and then they move Fast! There was a whole covey just chillin on the side of the road and that one let me get ONE shot before he bounced. If this would have been a straight birding vlog, I would have spent more time on it, but most landscape photographers wouldn't notice and wouldn't care, lol. I'm glad someone else appreciated it though. :)

I was out just yesterday, went to the post office to pick up a package, and I decided to take my Peak Design 10L Sling. In that, I can fit a Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3, Sigma 24mm F1.4, Canon RR 24-105mm F4, light weight photography gloves, wide neck strap, 4 battery poach, Canon EOS R with battery grip. I took lots of wintery photos of the frost covered trees and bush stems, the fleeting light, since we have no sunrise this time of year above the arctic circle. Last night and still today, we have ice fog.

Great idea, pack light and do not break your bck. for too many year I carried a bag on my shoulder and wound up with a bad back as a working photojournalist in NYC.. Now I travel LIGHT! waiting for the new 20L bag to come out of the kickstarter.

Ive taken pictures since 1978, and overpacking was a well known problem when hiking. Today I dont hike so much due to high age, but when I do I do it with one camera, a 28-300 or a 70-300, and two spare batteries. Thats all.

Loved the video. Sweet shot of the Montezuma quail. Loved the photos at the end, especially the one of the prickly pear in front of the cliff dwellings. Will have to add that location to my list of places I want to go. Lately, I've been lightening my load as well, taking only one camera and one extra lens (sometimes two). My thinking used to be that I needed to have two camera bodies with most-used lenses mounted (because I hated changing lenses in the field) and a couple extra lenses "just in case." And, of course, the obligatory full size Gitzo tripod with heavy RRS BH-50 ball head. And sometimes two tripods and heads so I can shoot both cameras at the same time! It's totally insane. I will still do that if the hike is really short; i.e., in sight of the truck, or non-existent. But now, one camera, two lenses, and a travel tripod (unless it's windy). If travel distance is outside the local area, I will have a second body with me but leave it in the truck. Always enjoy your videos.

Brent, thank you for your service. Your work is inspirational and has me wanting to visit and capture the beautiful SW. I’m definitely looking for ways to lighten the load while hiking. The newer R series bodies and glass help in this regard. Although I’m still carrying a 5D mk4 and EF glass in my pack. I used a Cotton Carrier at Philmont Scout Ranch Cimarron, NM in 2014. In 2019, I carried the M50 with a M to EF adapter using the PD Camera Clip trekking in the Himalayas. My go to lens has been the EF 8-15mm. The FOV available for panoramic shots are amazing.

What a great location, and I did catch that Fototripper reference! Gavin is actually the KZreadr who inspired me to get the Pocket 2, which I used and enjoyed for the past couple years. But I had a few complaints about it, not least the so-small-it's-kinda-useless screen. So when the Pocket 3 came out and seemed to fix all my complaints about the 2, I jumped on it. I've only used it for one video so far, but it's clearly a big upgrade, and certainly a lot lighter for Camera Lady to haul around, I'm sure! That footage looked good to me, and I could see her getting into the panning and first-person styles that the Pocket cams lend themselves to. Very cool that you added her photos at the end as well, don't think I've seen you do that before. Great to see! Merry Christmas to you guys, and here's to a stellar 2024, assuming the world doesn't explode at some point!

Great video Brent, I've hiked and travelled this way now for several years and I'm almost 55 now so it's more important than ever to 'lighten my load', as you say. I have a Canon G5X II which goes in my jacket pocket and often gives me some unexpected gem quick grab photos. My main camera is the Z50 and I keep an adapted 70-300 AF-P lens on it (105-450mm). This combo works so well, I sometimes throw my Z12-28mm in for landscapes and interiors too. Add in the iPhone with its excellent HDR ability and video quality and I'm never in need of more. I've reached the age now where I don't mind a less sharp image from a cheaper lens if it lets me travel more comfortably!

I was just in the Gila with a bunch of friends last weekend. We visited the Cliff dwellings and hiked nearby trails. It’s been a few years, and I forgot how awesome the area is. The history, the pictographs, the environment, and the wildlife. I put my camera away before going down that ladder though, you’re braver than me! I have been using the original Osmo pocket for many years, and have been very happy with it, but this new version looks amazing. Your footage was great! Regarding my typical hiking/backpacking setup, I tend to carry a 70 to 300 mm for most of my shots, and I also carry a 35 mm 1.8 for wide shots and playing with astrolandscapes. I’m saving up to hopefully get the 100-500 one of these days. I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing 🙂

Another great video Brent and Camera Lady. The Osmo video scenes worked perfectly from what I could see too. That is a beautiful place to visit. Would love to get there some time. Add it to the lengthy list of places either visited or wanting to visit. Carrying less gear is definitely something my wife and I think about. We are both guilty of carrying way too much for fear we might want something that we left behind. So, yes, giving some thought to what we are most likely to use is a worthwhile exercise. The only problem is that our outings are usually some distance and and in locations that we can't just go back and get something. Probably come back in a next life as a pack horse. :) So it occurred to me why I look forward to each of your videos. I find them incredibly relaxing to watch aside from the perspectives that you give on things that we find useful/helpful. So, Thank you and I'll wait patiently for the next one.

Great video Brent, and the Osmo footage looks awesome. I am not a pro photographer, but I'm really keen on photography whether film or digital. I have also started to simplify all my gear, because in my experiments I have managed to amass quite a lot of stuff. Since I'm not a pro, I feel OK with my choice of ditching the large DSLR bodies and concentrating on the Micro 4/3 ecosystem instead. Depending on where I go with my hiking, I either have a lightweight Panasonic GX1 body with a few primes (14mm, 20mm, 40mm) and a small zoom (e.g. my Panasonic 12-32 pancake), or my larger Panasonic G5 or G85 bodies with a Panny 12-60 and 100-400 zooms (and the same primes tucked in some corner). All of this fits into a small sling-bag or a tiny day-pack, which is absolutely perfect for my needs - I worry less about my gear and get the shots instead.

I only carry my Canon R5 and Canon 100-500mm plus my Canon 50mm and that's it at this moment in time. I am thinking of 1 more lens and that's a wide angle. Can you recommend a great Canon wide-angle lens for landscape photography? I also love shooting landscapes using my Samsung S21 Ultra smartphone. Depends on your budget. My overall favorite wide angle for landscape, or anything else really, is the RF 14-35. I also still love the EF 16-35 f4 too though. A bit cheaper, but seriously great IQ and all around solid lens. As for wide primes, I love my RF 24 f1.8. It's my favorite wide prime, and cheaper than both of the aforementioned zooms.

personally, i like having all my gear with me, BUT i've been definitely careful selecting it accordingly. R6m2 + 24-240mm + 16mm + 85mm F/2 + 800mm F/11 (adds up to roughly 3,3kg) is still decently light and definitely enough for most cases (i will get the 200-800, but i'll keep it separate and the 800 will stay in my base gear). If i really feel like wanting as little weigth as possible, i can easily fall back to the 24-240 alone or in combination with one of the others, as i see fit. In my eyes that's a small advantage to the "non-L" lenses, that none of them are really heavy or big and it's pretty easy taking a few with them. For example, the 85 F/2 weights 500g, the F/1,2 weigths 1,2kg. Carrying multiple L lenses definitelly will have a negative impact on the experiance with the adding up weigth.

Has been a thorn in my side for a while Brent trying to figure out what to take out sometimes. I have 4 camera bags, all Lowpro 2-450s, a 350 aw and tahoe 150. Mirrorless lenses and R6m2 in one, EF lenses with R7 and 2 adapters in the other 450. GOpro stuff and misc mounting hardware and wireless mics in another..It's to much. 2 capture clips for 2 bags. When I want to shoot birds I would take my sigma 150-600 along with my Rf 100-400 and EF 70-200, now I have to fit the RF200-800 in a bag now, but then I might see a sunset or some other landscape shot where I want a wide angle shot.. I need a camera lady with a strong back lol. I always feel I need good gear all the time to get the best photos. I would like to start hiking but getting into that mentality of what should I not take is a struggle. Something I will actively be working on in 2024. I chuckled at the Like and subscribe..we know lol. The few times I've been to NM I always found the landscape in the area really interesting, around Bisbee, the extinct Volcanoes in the NE region kinda fascinate me atm. Want to take a trip down there sometime. In Nebraska atm, but lived in Oklahoma panhandle as a kid. Osmo seemed good, looked a little choppy going over the bridge, 4k60? Thought about picking one up but gopro seems to work better for things I like to use it for, timelapses and whatnot. Happy holidays.

Yeah, picking what to take is usually the bane of my existence, lol. Nebraska has some great wildlife refuges. Also, the Osmo definitely does timelapses. That's one of the reasons I got it, was because it can do multi-axis timelapses, which I love. :P

Great video as always! When we were near Jemez, NM we visited a hot spring there. It was up the side of the mountain, but very nice to relax in the 80 degree water on a 45 degree day! Another question, what do you think of the IQ from the RF 100-400? Thank you.

Oh, yeah, I know those hot springs. Technically, they're warm springs, lol. The place I was at in this video is in sw NM, about 6 hours away from Jemez. I think the IQ from the RF 1-4 is great, especially for the price. I made a full review about a while back.

Great video and great lesson! I’m also the type of person to overpack because I wanna have everything with me. Regarding the Osmo, the quality looks amazing. There were some panning shots in the video that looked a bit stutter-y/jittery and I’m wondering if it could be due to the shutter speed/frame-rate (a couple timestamps 4:23, 5:00, 7:40)? Overall quality looks great though!

Thanks! Yeah, idk. All the b-roll she did, she filmed in 4K 60p, but we can't set the shutter speed on this thing so I hope they have a min shutter speed limit for the 180 rule built in.

@@BrentHall not sure why but my replies seem to be getting flagged. In any case, I did some research and found that you can adjust the shutter speed only in manual exposure mode. Swiping right on the screen, clicking on Pro to show "pro mode" settings, then Exposure, then Manual. The shutter speed will be on the left and iso on the right. Hope this helps!

Yes, keep it simple. Video looked great with the pocket 3. On walks a mile or 2 from my house I've only taken my R8 and RF16 lens. I can always crop in if I need more focal length. I did mess up the other day. I took my R8 and RF800 F11 lens to shoot some birds and I wish I would have taken a decent mic to capture the bird sounds as the wind picked up. I forgot to whip out my phone when the birds starting flying overhead and I was just overwhelmed. I could have used my phone or ran back to car to put on a 24-105 lens but got lazy I guess. Never seen so many birds and I missed it with the video.

In my opinion, you are always trying to explain what and why you are doing things, this makes your videos intresting. However, I would also like to know how you think when doing the videos, that is, the Canmra Ladys work. Why , and how, she is filming. Get a short look here, but I would like to know more how you both think when you are making the videos, are you discussing before what to do, or does the Camera Lady just do? And, any way, she is really great at it!

Thanks for the kind words man, we both really appreciate it! There have been a few people interested in that sort of thing. I've done similar behind the scenes videos for the channel members, but I haven't thought about doing it for the main channel since I didn't figure most of the general audience would be interested in it.

My Samsung S22 phone pics really does very fast HDR in night mode for very quick shots. I wish my new Canon R8 was as advanced. In raw one can pull out HDR in Canon DPP 4 but it takes a lot of time on my older pc and the hassle. With the phone one push of the button. It sounds like the pocket 3 is the ideal blogger type camera compared to trying to deal with a still camera doing video. Heck, again, my S22 really does video much better than my R8 if having to move with it etc. without adding stabil.

A few reasons. Form factor, the gimbal, the sensor size (and D-Log), and most importantly the mic. The mic it comes with is a huge deal for me and I absolutely love the seamless integration and quality of that thing. Plus, it's what camera lady wanted, so...

The OZMO footage wasn't smooth at 4K on my monitor. Cutting down to 1080p seemed to help. With a ton of L glass always ready, I'm finding the RF 100-400 has become the lens that always seems to be on the camera. The whiners that keep crying about 3rd Party lenses for Canon Mirrorless clearly haven't tried the standard RF glass, nor haven't looked at the prices Sigma and Tamron are charging for the glass on other mirrorless brands.

  • @BrentHall

    @BrentHall

I think a big contributor to that was that we totally forgot to set the shutter speed to 1/120 sec for the 4K 60p, so slowing it down made those clips choppy. That was my bad for not really going through the settings all the way before we started filming with it. We fixed it though, and hopefully the next videos will look a bit better. I agree too, I absolutely love the RF lenses, even (and especially) the smaller, lighter, cheaper ones. For me, they work wonderfully.

Not sure what you mean? I used to rock climb and boulder quite a bit when I was younger and less broken, but after being in the military and breaking my back, snapping my arm in half, and destroying my shoulders and left knee, I tend to be a bit more cautious these days.
