I typically find that when I feel as if I couldn't be happier, I've simply set my point of reference too low. For example I recently felt this way even though I was forced to pick up my dog's shit in the backyard using only my bare hands given that I had totally misplaced my gloves and shit shovel. Then I realized that this was truly a big step up from earlier in the day when I had to clean out the septic system with nothing but a roll of paper towels. It just goes to show that even when things are good, they're still shit.

Some constructive thoughts for you, on reading these realist paintings. As a realist painter ;-) In the Remington painting, he is absolutely filling in the shadows. If you look at the two front horses, in their chest region (do horses have chests? I think so...) you can see it is an occlusion area that is shaded darker than, for example, the cast shadows of the same horses. Same if you look at the front facing side of the carriage. The left corner is in occlusion, while the center, getting some ambient light is shaded slightly less dark. So all the shadow detail is there! Remington is simply painting with, what we painters would call 'compressed values.' So in other words, there is still a full value range, it is just hella brightened. Where you really see detail fall away is in the highlights. There is virtually no detail in the carriage windows, or in the lanterns, or in the white hair of the horses. Here's a good view on understanding how realist painter's compress values kzread.info/dash/bejne/npOrtJl8aLmwZ9I.html

Love your point/comparison of the fall off of shadow detail in the world of painting! Awesome reminder that aiming for perfect exposure every time isn’t necessarily the be all end all, and that it’s okay to embrace happy accidents, or find artistic value in them. I think having discussions like this makes it easier for us to be intentional with our work and find our unique voices as photographers. So thanks!

Jason, I've been running into the same love affair for overexposed B&W but with the original formula Acros 100. It turns it from a boring, flat, but well balanced roll into something grainy, extremely contrasty, and like a Baroque fever dream done in charcoal. Add in an orange filter and a CPL, and it turns sunset skies into blockbuster dramas. I'll have to run some HP5 and see what she looks like, but for now I've got enough Acros 100 to last me until my attention wanes, or someone jingles keys and takes my camera in my next intervention.

If you want low white and high black points that’s totally achievable with color negative film when scanning. It’s best to shoot the film at box speed for this to make sure the highlights aren’t getting to compression. And box speed will still give you all the shadow detail with Portra, Gold, or Fuji Superia.

The guy in the video on the iPhone makes a lot of points, pretty much all of them bad. To me, the only convincing or at least semi-convincing argument against film photography has been that, unless I am actually making darkroom prints, I am only engaging in a sort of photography that's basically quasi-analogue which removes or at least can remove a lot of the limitations that I've decided to place upon myself by shooting on film. (There is also the idea that digital editing can pretty convincingly replicate the same visual effects that film photography produces, but I see that less as an argument against film than an argument for digital). I get these and I kind of buy them, but at the end of the day I'm pretty stupid and even though I'm bad at chemistry I still have a better understanding of what I've produced when I take a picture on film than when I shoot digital since all of the computer stuff is too much for my brain to handle. In other words, I prefer to make something that exists and I understand how it exists over making something that possibly kind of exists, that I don't understand, and that I can delete forever with a click.

I love colour darkroom printing but can’t do that anymore for reasons. I agree that most of us are working ‘hybrid’. I think I like the analogue process because there are more things to go wrong/different. Imperfect control and more chaos.
