Photographing and Editing a Panorama in Portugal

Want to shoot pano photography? Here's how I made this panorama in Portugal. A BTC photography vlog and tutorial today.
My instagram: bit.ly/IGBvS | Jodie's Channel: / alajode
I get asked a lot how to create a panorama. So, I thought I would do a bit of a photography tutorial in today's vlog.
I'm in Portugal, which must be one of the most underrated countries in the world for photography. And, while here, I'm out shooting some travel images. We headed to a place called Amarante today to shoot some images. And, to be honest, town was weird. There was a strange carnival/festival happening when we were there. So, the photo of the fairytale location doesn't exactly depict the actual world around me.
But, it was so much fun. The location was amazing, and I think the panorama came out really cool. That said, I think my non pano images might have even been better. I think sometimes panoramic images show too much, when it's better to narrow down the world and pick out the best bits.
At the end of the vlog, I even bring you into Lightroom to show you how to create a panorama in Lightroom.
Tomorrow, there will be another photography vlog from here in Portugal.

Hi from Portugal 😀 Amarante it's a very picturesque town! I went to there on the beginning of this year, and i've got fog, rain and the town mostly for myself 😃 Keep up the vlogging, it is a great inspiration!

The strange things that you saw on the streets are part of the summer celebrations. The city has the streets lit, traditional street markets, concerts and religious processions. This type of festivities take place in summer throughout Portugal and are usually made in honor of the patron saint of the city / town. This year in Amarante the festivities take place from June 1 to 3.

Hi Brendan, all that thing that was going around it's called "feira" in Portuguese, they are very common, people sell all kinds of stuff and normally they are always trails where you can eat and drink. Popular music is very common as well to hear in those events. Unfortunately due to Covid not a lot is happening this summer in Portugal otherwise you had noticed it already about those kind of events. Enjoy the country. Alentejo is very good for minimalism photography. Cheers.

What you saw in Amarante is called "feira" and basically is a local market where people can sell a great variety of products, from food to clothing. Usually it happens once a month, or in some places once a week. These kind of things is very traditional of our country. And great video as always!

Hahahha, funny. That place where they were selling lots of stuff is a common thing in Portugal, especially during city festivals. They are called "Feira" or in plural "Feiras". I actually don't know the equivalent in North America, but it's just street vendors :P. It's interesting and amusing to have a different perspective from an outsider. Hope you enjoyed!

Hi Brendan, I’ve been watching your videos since your Japan series and have been enjoying them a lot. I am originally from the south of Portugal but currently living in London for a while. I’ve attended a wedding in Amarante last summer and it was amazing. You should definitely check the Douro valley while you are in the area - Beautiful scenery and great wine too! You probably already know this but when you merge photos into panorama, you can use the boundary warp slider to control the warping effect. I think this would have straighten the reflection line, improving your image. Enjoy Portugal!

Beautiful looking place and love the images. The pano merge in Lightroom is superb to work with and I use it quite a lot when I want to get a lot of a scene in, but don't want to have background elements larger. By the way, the Lightroom Pano merge creates a DNG file (basically an Adobe RAW file) rather than a Tiff. Great video

Brendan, I loved the pano!! Actually all the photos were great! It's amazing how you can do things like that with some awesome cameras as well as your skills, of course hahaha :) But I've only got a Fuji Finepix S1 (my first DSLR was a Christmas 2015 gift & I've been learning with it but found out it was recently discontinued). I've had to buy an adapter AND step up/down rings to add a lens, and it can't do many of these amazing things IN camera. I know I can't afford a camera like yours. What would be a good (but halfway affordable camera, under $1000?) that CAN hold lenses & filters & do the things yours does (maybe not that quickly or perfectly haha) that a beginner photographer could look for? I know some people prefer Canon or Nikon etc... I just want something that I can do landscape/wildlife/architecture mostly & that I can keep for a few years before needing to buy something better. All recommendations/tips welcome :) I learn something from you everyday, I just can't put some of the knowledge to any use!! Thanks for all your hard work!! :)

I liked the pano shot once edited but it did bring up a question. When talking about composition, you often hear photographers say "identify your subject or focal point" and compose around that. But on vistas, wide shots, panos, I sometimes can't say I have a specific subject. It is more a capture of the scene itself. On this shot, is the cathedral the subject, the bridge, or do you see the entire scene the subject?

  • @BrendanvanSon

    @BrendanvanSon

    6 жыл бұрын

I think, through all the photography lessons there is something important photographers don't say: 1) Does it look cool? 2) Than shoot it. There's no formula to photography, just tricks to try to help compose.Panos are different, for sure. I always try to think about what the subject of a pano is, and what leads to it. So, for this the subject is the cathedral, which is why I put it at 1/3rd. And the foreground reflecting all leads to it.
