The news of how fast this fire was spreading was hard to hear. Thank for capturing the photos of this monster fire. My son was one of the thousand firefighters sent there. This fire moved at a such a fast pace I couldn’t help but worry. Seeing these pictures and the footage helped to keep me close to my son and pray consistently for his safety as well as the rest of the firefighters. These men and women are so brave to be out there fighting that monster! Thank you!!

Your son and his fellow firefighters are incredible! How they kept this from being as bad as it could have been blows my mind! Respect from an old Hotshot ('91-'92)

Toxic air quality. Very devastating for NM people. So sad for the NM residents. Hope the government can provide assistance as needed.

What is burning in the sky? Firefighters need to be paid more!

Firefighters and teachers deserve more, yet we live in a capitalistic society that encourages business not social structure, but I guess it's worth it as I watch this from my Tesla, eat McD's, while my pets are safe in my gated community inside a 3,000 sqft. home because that is more important than anything else.

Actively burning fires release gases from partially burnt fuels. Add wind(oxygen) and it can become a massive blow torch. (That's what you saw burning in the sky.) If conditions are right a fire can create 'its own weather', updrafts drawing in unburnt fuel and then it can take on a life of its own...creating its own wind and even lightning. As a former wildland firefighter (deployed more than once to Ruidoso), I am amazed that those STUDS were able save what they did! Absolutely amazing effort by all. BRAVO!!! As awful as this was, hopefully the Village will finally pass an ordinance to thin out the trees in residential areas. This could have been much, much worse.

@ivanthemisunderstood6940 those fire fighters initially on the scene did a hell of a job. I lived in Ruidoso back in the mid 90s, lot of dry fuel there and winds are common. That they held a line in those residential areas, where the trees and brush are thick, is a testament to their skill and fortitude. From an old infantry vet, wildland fire fighters are among the few I will tip my hat too and respect. Hard as wood pecker lips.

So he violated the evacuation zones? Firefighters have their hands full enough without having to watching out for journalist.

He was one of dozens of journalists flocking to the scene. He shouldn't have been there, but at least he 'hiked' in instead of clogging up the roads and distracting emergency personnel at road-blocks like the rest of the buzzards.

This format is antiquated. With the advent of youtube/internet no one wants to watch two anchors hand it over to a correspondent who in turn slightly hands it over to the interviewee. The way the clip was titled, it is not far fetched to assume most of us clicked on vid to see more pictures of devastation and less yapping. Its 2024… cut to the chase
