I've said this here before. My father in law is 90 and he served in Korea, but he goes out of his way to correct people or to let people know that he served after the war was over. His line is "All I did was eat chow with the fellas and stand guard at the border". After watching Dons videos, I now respect my father in law more. He's an honorable man.

My experience with Top Secret claims, Yes , some missions/jobs which might have cuased international incidents, such as US troops/contractors in LAOS in Vietnam or in Nicuragua or any war-crimes which have been covered up, do get slapped with NDA's , non disclosure agreements, but that is about it. And those guys who were involved in those times don't mention or hint about them at all, becuase they are still under NDA's.

A couple years ago, I found out something peculiar about one of our greeters. I never really talked to this guy, but for some reason I came to church early and we started talking. I found out he was a vet and I thanked him for his service. I asked what he did in the military and he told me he was a Green Beret. I was shocked because I was a Navy brat and I honestly only met one Seal (he was legit, trust me) but I have never met a Green Beret. So I asked where he served and had a very elaborate story, like being a chopper pilot and going on secret missions. He apparently had to learn Vietnamese but forgot most of it. I'm a language nerd and I was curious about Defensive Language School so I asked how long did it took him to learn Vietnamese. He said it took him only three months. I was impressed so my follow up question was something like, did you enjoy DLI and how difficult was the DLAB? He had no clue what I was talking about and I had to explain it to him. It was then that red flags went off. I didn't pressure him further but I doubt he was Green Beret.

  • @pep590

Good for you! The Vietnamese basic course is designed to take 47 weeks to complete at DLI. I knew an older friend who went there. These phonies pop up everywhere. Think about where this story is being told. A place where people are conditioned from a young age to believe extraordinary claims without evidence. There's also a matter of tribal thinking, where if you bring in people to speak who are also members of your tribe, you're more likely to believe them. It's an environment ripe for taking advantage of people, and many conmen have done just that. Just look up how many televangelists have private jets thanks to preaching prosperity gospel BS.

Paul, my father was drafted out of high-school in 1968 into the US Marine Corp and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969. I was born in October of 1970. My father's siblings who are old enough to remember when he left for Vietnam said he was a shell of himself when he returned. He was a great man to me but a changed but loved man to others that knew him longer than I did. On September 26, 1992, I lost my father at the age of 43 to Metastatic Malignant Melanoma due to exposure to Agent Orange from his time in Vietnam. He has 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren that he will never lay eyes on. My father's service to this country was no more grand, stoic or heroic than your father's service. Please thank your father on behalf of me and my family for his great service to our country. And please ask him to stand not only for himself and his great service but for the men and women like my father who cannot stand themselves. He's earned that right to be acknowledged and celebrated by all of us.. God bless you and your family.

When he began his fake life in the public eye, he never dreamed something like the Internet would be developed. I know the Bay Area having lived there for many years back in the 70's. A guy like him could run amok and never be found out 20 miles away. He did just that in his little church and presumably among Southern Baptist (SBC) circles. Those were the days when SBC churches stayed with their own. But when he ventured out to the big and independent Neighborhood Church, one with connections, he had to fear he would be found out. I have zero pity for this POSer. He deserves scorn from those of us who served without embellishing our work. (My time was 1971-1974 Army). I do feel sorry for those he hurt -- his family, his local church, the men's meeting at the Neighborhood Church in Castro Valley, and anyone who had been taken in by his claims. When he described his leg wound as being from a "hang" grenade, that should have perked up the ears of Veterans in his audience. Like fingernails on a chalkboard to those of us who handled them.

Yup, there was one in the San Francisco Bay area I worked with. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla Commander Vanfleet. I was a Division Staff Officer and Junior Operations Duty Officer (JODO) at Air Station Sacramento when Vanfleet was touting his Trident on his uniform. When Senior Chief Shipley did a video on Vanfleet and backed it with the news report from Channel 4, I was disgusted and ashamed that I had worked with such a lier. When I first met him, I noted the Trident on his uniform and I simply said; "Ah, Navy SEAL,... Interesting." He just gave me a funny look and chuckled nervously, while quickly moving on to greet other senior staff. I guess he was expecting me to be impressed, I was more curious as to why a SEAL would be an Auxiliarist, as opposed to fulfilling other vital roles in government contracting or executive enterprise. Sort of being a Big Fish, in a little pond... it seemed out of place to me.

Ah ‘he’s an old man leave him alone’ trick. I got torn to shreds by fellow veterans for calling out an elderly fake on a commemoration day a few years ago. He was wearing a current dress uniform shirt (I mean come on there’s an immediate red flag. Actually wearing a piece of uniform when we were in suits and blazers) with more medals than a North Korean general and by the looks of them served from WWII to Afghanistan 🤯. He was going from table to table in the bar, I’m assuming for attention or free drink. Maybe he needs help so calling him out is a good first step imo instead of ignoring the fact he was stealing the honour of 1000’s who gave their lives in those campaigns on his chest.

I’m not saying he’s not a veteran he could have been but he was what we call ‘bloating’, that is making out he done a lot more in service than he actually did.
