IT never could have. A phone like this makes it easy for anyone to make an adaptation to that socket, which decentralizes the corporate ideology and it cannot condense to maximize profit. For me, I am glad this video is still around and didn't conspire into a mandella effect among our culture. There is still hope... The people are more united now than in 2014 and the curtain continues to be pulled back as we institutionalize technology into everything. We are observing much much more, and we will adapt to it. I surmise that greed will mostly fall and the true next of our people will RISE Sadly, at 28, I may not get the chance to see it. These chess pieces move across vast amounts of time. Likely a century or so, depending on undiscovered innovations that could potentially sky rocket the rate

Yeah because anyone with a few braincells knows how costly this would be and how impossible this is. Swapable parts are relatively easy to achieve but just putting any part anywhere is not possible at all because there's a circuit these parts sit on which is fixed, so you can't put anything anywhere.

Too bad Google took this idea, then ruined it. They started with something totally modular, then did some "market research", and decided that they would integrate all the core components into the device, and leave modularity for accessories only, which ruins the entire point of the modular phone.

Work started sometime in March/April in 2013, and Dave Hakkens independently announced Phonebloks in September of that same year. About a month later, Motorola publicly announced Project Ara and a collaboration with Phonebloks.

When asked for why it looks very new, the farmer says I have replaced the blade three moons ago, and the handle last year. And this peg, it was the same when I received it from my father - he said.. That's modular design. We Really Need this on mobile devices..

OLLLLLLLLLLLD.

This is quite an excellent idea, but how will the electronic nodes travel through a thin circuit motherboard? Where are the cooling systems, because my theory, if this works: then the phone will be at least 4" thick. Like I said, good idea, but sorry- not going to happen in the next 10 years.

You don't need new one smartphone, just buy an older smartphone as iPhone 4 or any other and fix it with fixit website. I do it since the beginning of smart life (crazy you say ?) and i enjoy. I spend less than hundred for phone still really good and if you wan't upgrade (software only you right and i think it's greatest thing with the project on the top) use whiitedoor or just some tweak.

It really depends who you are. For a tech "savvy" guy like me, I need something fast and powerful, with basically good everything (I own a OnePlus 3 and it's the best smartphone IMO). If you're an app developer or something of that sort you need new. But, for anyone who just needs a phone that just does the basics then that's a decent strategy.

Sir, brilliant concept, however... I had the same for cars too. The BEST components from each manufacturer and you as an individual could customize it. A streamlined, assembly line, car that was efficient for everyone, but individualized as well. Could your idea work... Surely. Will it? Only if they can make a profit on it sadly enough. Make you a deal, if the evolution revolution comes and I find myself as the leader of it, I will appoint you head of the science board to implement great ideas like this.

Why are so many comments upset that this *wildly unrealistic and unpractical idea* didn't come thru? Each one of those modules would need an incredible amount of R&D to make happen. Right now the Bluetooth module in your phone cost them like 5¢ to integrate, whereas a modular one would need to be like $20, and that's for *every component.* NFC, gyroscope, accelerometer, and more. You may say you don't need them but why would you pay *more* to *not have them?* Also the "base" would be a nearly impossible thing to design. Besides polling all the slots to determine what's in them, it needs to be a middle-man so they can communicate between each other just as fast as if they were connected directly like they are in a normal phone. This is such an advanced task that it would need a very powerful processor to handle it, in *addition* to the powerful processor you would need for your regular phone. This device wouldn't just be a nightmare to create, it would cost tens of thousands to the actual user to even begin to match other peoples' regular phones.
